Boating to Sooke from Vancouver

i am in.sounds like a good time

A group of mainlanders crashing the SVIAC derby sounds like good times. It was a regret of mine from last season not attending.

I did the run from tofino to vic last year, took just a hair over 3 hours, I was another 2 hours from vic to west van. This was in a 30' grady center con with twin 350's so I was doing about 38 knots. Easy run if the water is flat......

Be even better if we out fished them :)

You would all be more than welcome. We will try not to make it too easy for you, but if you kick our butts, bragging is not only not frowned upon, it's encouraged.

If plans solidify, you may want to check with the Pedder Bay Marina and see if you can reserve/book some moorage for your boats for the Fathers Day Weekend, which would be best for everyone as that is where the Derby is. They also have camping if you took some gear and booked a spot. If Pedder Bay Marina fills up, you could try Sunny Shores and perhaps we can see if some of us locals who have moorage at SS could arrange to drive a few of you to Pedder Bay with your fish cooler for the weigh in and party, when we drive over to Pedder Bay ourselves.

If these guys could do Nanaimo to Kits Beach, 50+ miles. I'm sure you guys will be fine.

Yeah some of them did but on the more blustery days a high percentage didn't!

Funny I was planning a trip to Sooke from West van last year but was enjoying Vancouver/Gulf Islands fishing so much I never fit in the trip. Fathers day has the Gabriola Derby so many may be doing that instead. Tough to leave Georgia Strait in May/June as S. Bowen and especially GI fishery is so good then.

Pedder Bay has been confirmed as th host forth Father's Day weekend derby again this year. We had some very tasty beer on site from Hoyne brewery and the folks who were camping in the RV sites and who didn't have to drive after fishing enjoyed their share of it. It would be great to have more participation from guys and gals from outside our area and some good fun competition

ive had guys run on scheduled family holidays , mid summer , all the way around the corner
in 30 footers even... when it blowin it blowin , 3 or 4 different weather changes from A to B
for most part , not a big deal , BUT , had a few say NEVER AGAIN ,
Van ta Barkley , so unpredictable , ruined there trip (s) , weather window never really happened
they took poundings , kids were horrified :) ... mom had em towed back from Alberni ta Nanaimo lol...
its alot farther than most think , and fog can make it even more interesting ,
then theres comin home ?? whats the weather gonna do on Sunday ??? ya never know..
great if ya have no set schedule , not so much with booked dates

carefull....

I know that boat and that thing flies! Would love to know your fuel bill...lol.

Fuel consumption would be crazy. 38 knots is about 44 miles an hour. His fuel burn would be about 60 gallons an hour. So a 5 hour run at roughly 5 bucks a gallon would cost him $1500! Even if it's 50 gallons an hour, it's $1250. 250-300 dollars an hour to run that boat with those motors at that speed. Full throttle would be more. This test on a similarly equipped boat shows a full throttle fuel burn of just under 71 gallons an hour:

Maybe the numbers from the test involve smaller US gallons. Still pretty stupendous fuel consumption.

Snoopdog, take your rude advice elsewhere, like the hijack thread. We were all good until you showed up.

Good thing your uncle was paying for the fuel on that trip eh ....heard that you have a good story about a sail boat.. :)

I priced the ferry (along with the new fuel surcharge) and it's about $250 each way. On a nice summer day I could cruise all the way to Pedder for half that much and enjoy the ride. However, you may need to pick the right day so some flexibility on timing may be required unless you have a larger boat.

My dad is flying to San Francisco out of Bellingham next week for about $128 return. All things considered, the ferries are becoming too expensive for some folks to justify ...unless you're that guy making wine while boating from Tofino to Vancouver in 5 hours. ;)

So is anyone seriously interested in making this run to Pedder bay from Vancouver for the Father's Day Derby?

I did the Silva Bay last year and regret not attending the Banana Challange. This year, I plan to attend and will be crossing on the water. Seems like no better time to make the trip.

Anyone? PM or post.

Figured I'd get this back up. I still plan on running across to Sooke this summer. Plan is for the JDF Banana Challenge Derby on June 14 and 15th. Only a month and a half away, is anyone interested buddy boating the trip on Friday morning/afternoon? After my trip to the central coast last year (300 miles each way) Sooke should be a piece o' cake, but it was good fun having a second boat along for the ride, if #1 for safety, or #2 on-water camaraderie and good times.

I'll be in a 245 walkaround and cruise in the high 20mph.

Looking forward to it!
