Bamfield reports/ Winter 10/11

Heading down on Thursday to Saturday. Gotta shut the cabin down for winter. Thought maybe I should go find the nice ones that Bod missed. :D Will fire you all a report when I get back.

Autumn Ty-ee, We sure don't get em all. Haha. Gotta love the winter when most days there isn't another boat in site. Should be fish further inside like maybe Vernon Bay or Sarita. Haven't had the time to get more than a few minutes from home yet to check it out. Be great to get a report from in that way.

was up there last weekend closing the cabin for the winter. Didn't get to put the rods in the water but wanted to warn you all that there is a TON of junk in the water. All kinds of logs and debris from the really high tides we've had. Was weaving back and forth coming down the canal avoiding the stuff. Regulars will be know the drill but for those not familiar, take your time.

Thanks Bod for the tips. Will rport back. If you are out and about my cabin is the back cabin in Elbow cove which is behind Diplock. Always have cold pops on hand. Fogducker I am extending the invite to you as well as it sounds like you will also be around the sound. I will also be on 68

Arrived on Thursday afternoon, dropped the prawn traps on fished Holford for about an hour. Tacked some fish but no biters except for a cod which an eagle anxiuosly took. He was circling the boat at about 30 feet before we even released it. Friday pulled traps and lots of prawns. Fished Sarita for 2 or 3 hours, only one bait ball and again no biters. Tacked very few fish so sounds like the Whistle bouy would be the better bet. Cabin chores were calling so no more fishing Friday or Saturday. Saturday went home with lots of prawns and crabs. Did not see a single other boat fishing the whole three days except for a couple of guys pulling traps in Sarita. Sorry I didn't see ya F.D. but had leave Saturday due to that work thing getting in the way. How did you make out?

Well , that was too quick

We arrived Thursday ,

Put our pots through-out Sarita as well , Real good catches of both Prawn n Crab , In between time , dragged some lines on the later tide changes , Probabally hit sarita the most , convenient , this area can light up in the winter , not this time , little bait , no feeders . Next day we went and hunted Vernon bay for an hour n a half , nothing , some good bait balls though, alot more than Sarita.
Last Day , To Kirby , Wham , found them , hooked into four fish in a hour , largest was 12lbs only , but what a fight , CHROME n Bright Red , what a bonus to the trip , wasn't expecting this . Did not get to the Whistle Buoy , was a little too Rolly there for the Little Ducker.. Did manage to harvest a Few Oysters on the way back , to boot as well , Didn't have to lose the gear Jeff,,,haha,, nice chattin with Kenny from Rocky point Charters , thanks for your knowledge , we had a hoot.

sorry Autumn T , tried to get ya on the radio , ta na prevail , next time ,keep thems pops cool

speaking of that boat prawning , was it a larger commercial type vessel , White , 35 feetish , this guy was prawnin like a commercial , as far as i know , it's not open to them right now , maybe im wrong , he was pulling non stop , only 2 guys on board ,I let them know we were watchin , pulled up right next to them , a FEW times , not very friendly , they did not come back the next day ?? were tied up at Poett the whole time we were there ??
Sketchy ??

for this time of the year , there were way more pots out there that iv'e ever seen ,hmmm

hopefully im wrong , maybe a test fishery or sumthin

Later fellas

FD..

Those guys prawing you saw is the same boat we saw and they did pull the traps alot. They asked us how the fishing was but I think they were just checking to make sure we wern't checking their traps as we were trolling right along them. Don't think I will be back up until the logger derby in March unless weather and work permits. Had the radio on 68 when in the boat and the hand held on in the cabin oh well next time and yes the pops will be cold.

Well I've been itching to get out and catch a few fish. The weather has sucked and so has the time to do it. I decided to make an effort to see what was out here. I suspected there should be fish but on Wednesday, I fished through the hi slack change without a bite, although I was seeing lots of feed. I couldn't really believe there was nothing there.
Friday back to the same spot, midway through the ebb tide. First rod down and fish on right away. Just lucky? Rod back down and second rod in and a few minutes later fish on. Grab the rod and look at the other side and it has popped and a fish is taking line there also. It was blowing like hell and all I could do was shut the motor down and go with the wind. To make along story short, I made one tack past the Whistle Bouy until I was nearly three miles out and then pulled the gear and beat my way home.
Total about 6 or 7 "keepers" between 5 and 10 pounds and about that many more smaller fish. And one to the seal, flasher and all.
Saturday was "Harvest Party" at Mills Landing so out to get some prawns for that. Blowing hard enough that I barely managed to pull the traps. But they did well. Crab trap only held one large dungy. Trolled past Brady's Beach and got 2 springs about 10 pounds or so. Enough so off to the party.(But thats another story)
Sunday. Slept a little late and was moving a little slow. Osama called and it was decided that I would pick him and C.S. up and fish for a couple of hours and get a couple fish. 2 hours later all we had manged to do was catch jelly fish. Oh well, that's winter fishing. All an all a great weekend and there are definately some good fish around.

Bump this back up now that it's on.

Bod's second annual Boxing day derby was a great time as always! Thanx so much Ken and Betty, pleasse keep doin' it!

Ken won of course with a 13lbr. He had a ten also the bugger.

We kept a 7 and released a 5.

Drinks and deliciousness were consumed at Rocky Point Proper.

We killed an 8lbr today and then went cruising it was so nice. Chatted with Searun on the box, he's out here collecting bugs. He had some buddies into some sweet fish up at the other end of the sound, probably go check that out tomorrow.

Finally some sunshine and less windy conditions, man it's been a bich!

Post some pics tomorrow.

Was a great day out there for sure. We got a few prawns and then dropped the gear at Kirby for a couple of passes. A twelve and ten and a couple of shakers. The fish have been around since the end of Nov. Just needed the weather to feel like going out. Had to break ice away from the dock this morning though. Once the sun came up it was like a June day. Fish all over the Sound by the radio chatter.

Good ta here the fish are about ,
unfortunately i'm not , She's , lets say an ice rink at the moment at the Nook lol,,
some pics from our friends , Nadine and Paul , our awesome Caretakers ,

Happy New Year ta All

Hey great chatting with you guys on the box. Prawning was good for us. Some very nice size ones. Dropped the crab trap for a few hours to catch some dinner...yummy and a couple of huge guys. I didn't have time to drop a line for winter springs, but some of my buddies fished fairly hard and did well. Biggest was 15 pounds. They hit into them off Diplock one day and the next...gone. Seems the fish are moving around. Cabin looked fairly good after the gale that hit us a few weeks back. I have a lot of projects to complete before next season, so each time we go down there won't be much time for fishing.

Dropping the crab traps was a good tip ;) Maybe I can see some of those bad boys at my house tonight? Game starts at 5:00 :)
