Aquaculture improving?..The Fish Farm Thread

I'm not sure how staying in your field is good or bad ..... Elmo will always be an ENGO .... who cares...... most of us don't change our stripes.

I wouldn't phrase it as "staying in your field".

Instead I would point-out the accountability that public servants (Federal & Provincial) should be subject to - the focus that they should have being focused on protecting public resources as a priority - and that they should stop lying & protecting any industry. There is a complete failure of fiduciary duty here. Leave the lobbying for paid industry BS artists/PR firms.

For this ONPSF industry - they have been protected from both any serious environmental assessment where pros/cons are admitted & discussed - and debated as to who wins/looses as a society - and they DO NOT use any scientifically-defensible siting criteria to attempt to mitigate wild/cultured stock interactions.

I'm sick and tired of my tax dollars going to another entitled arrogant government gate-keeper who doesn't want to understand he is as public employee working within a public resource for the public - and consistently lies to protect his industry buddies. This especially includes the communications branch of DFO.

aa, you sound like a disgruntled ex dfo employee ...

Mirror, mirror on the wall, eh?

I have been dealing with DFO & specifically their aquaculture & comms branches for well over 20 years now. By-and-large - I have never met such a secretive, unhelpful, disrespectful, dishonest bunch of public employees in my life. They are a National disgrace on both Coasts and should be disbanded.

And I can name specific names & have hundreds of pages of ATIPs to back up my claims (just a little posted on this thread earlier) - as well as thousands of peer-reviewed articles.

Informed & experienced would be my assessment of my assessment of their lack of fiduciary duty, unprofessionalism, dishonesty & disrespect.

And Raincoast also deserves to be challenged on their assertions, too. But they are just another myopic ENGO with their hand out for money for causes they create & promote.

But the difference here is that our own Federal & provincial Regulators have a much higher bar wrt accountability, legal requirements, liability, & fiduciary responsibility. They are part of our government, and are paid by us taxpayers to responsibly manage our natural resources - as a priority.

They are not a multinational corporation or an ENGO.

See the difference? I know you do - but are just trying to deflect the criticism because it leads to spotlighting the all-to-apparent collusion & corruption within DFO.

That was first hand experience working for the provincial agriculture ministry for several years. The provincial aquaculture and fish health depts IMO were secretive, dishonest and withheld and manipulated info.

The prevailing attitude was that those members of the public that were that were questioning fish farms were the ‘enemy’. Therefore they did not have to be respected and did not need to be held accountable by them.

There was such a pro fish farm bias it was truly disturbing, despite legitimate concerns and research pointing out problems with net pen fish farms. This behaviour was supported from the very top.

Similar complaints have been made against DFO in this matter as the media has shown over the years. Truly disgusting!! 😡 I say move these fish farms onto land where their negative impacts can be better managed!!

Like raincoast SRKW statement lol you can’t make this up

“Unlike stakeholder forums that weigh recovery measures within the context of economic interests and policy constraints, this workshop was designed to prioritize science- and evidence-based solutions.”

Lol
I was referring to AA, not the ENGO’s. You obviously missed that! The ENGO’s are out to lunch on this and many other issues.

Atlantic salmon were only detected in freshwater downstream of the Cermaq facility at Boot Lagoon (sites Robertson Creek and Hatchery Lagoon)

Renibacterium salmoninarum, a common bacterium found in aquaculture and returning adult salmon was accordingly found only downstream of the Cermaq and SEP aquaculture facilities, as was Yersinia ruckeri. The virus, SPAV-1, which primarily infects Chinook, was associated with detections of that species. A parasite of diverse marine fish species, Kudoa thyrsites, was only detected downstream of the Cermaq facility.

Similarly, the distribution of salmon pathogens was also impacted by discharge from the aquaculture facilities.

the association of pathogen detections with aquaculture discharge in spawning habitat is concerning and warrants further investigation.

Figured you'd be interested, Nog. Concerning stuff. More concerns:

1/ They found 2 viruses, Cutthroat trout virus-2 (ctv-2), which is associated with brain lesions, and Erythrocytic necrosis virus (env), that infects blood cells, were only detected in the hatchery effluent. env was purportedly a marine virus but now found here in FW;
2/ The bacterium Flavobacterium psychrophilum (fl_psy), the causative agent of bacterial coldwater disease (BCWD), was detected in all samples
(including at low levels in the control), but was at highest levels below the Cermaq facility. It can be problematic in juvenile fish in freshwater environments and is well known among hatcheries for causing “bacterial coldwater disease” which can be lethal,
3/ Ichthyophonus hoferi (ic_hof) , a common vertically transmitted marine parasite of fish, was only detected in the effluent from Boot Lagoon. It is well known to impact Chinook salmon migrating in the Yukon River,
4/ Kudoa thyrsites (ku_thy), a parasite of diverse marine fish species, was only detected in and downstream of the Boot Lagoon effluent,
5/ Renibacterium salmoninarum (re_sal), the causative agent of BKD, was detected in the Boot Lagoon effluent and at lower levels in the Stamp River before its confluence with the Ash,
6/ Yersinia ruckeri (ye_ruc), that causes enteric redmouth disease, was detected in the Boot Lagoon effluent as well as at the Stamp before the Ash confluence,
7/ Vibrio anguillarum (vi_ang) and Vibrio salmonicida (vi_sal), that can both cause vibriosis or Hitra disease, were detected exclusively in the effluent of the Boot Lagoon facility. Listonella (Vibrio) anguillarum causes vibriosis, a hemorrhagic septicaemic disease affecting salmonids in salt and brackish water, particularly in the summer months when the water temperature rises above 10C. Aliivibrio (Vibrio) salmonicida is the causal agent of cold water vibriosis (also known as Hitra disease), a septicaemic condition affecting primarily farmed Atlantic salmon and rainbow trout in saltwater,
8/ The Stamp River showed increased infectious agent loads downstream of the Boot Lagoon effluent (Downstream of Fence, and Stamp at Ash), compared to samples that did not directly contain aquaculture effluent (Ash and Great Central Lake).
