If your on the fence here is a place that will give you that first shot.
You know what's coming this fall as the general public aren't willing to go through another lock down when it's the unvaccinated that are the issue.

you can get your first dose from any vaccine clinic site no PHN or appointment necessary.

Quoted for those who trashed the govt approach in the early days and claimed Ottawa had made huge blunders in procurement process. Once the Americans and the EU stopped derailing our vaccine shipments, the distribution has gone so well that most people haven't noticed. Most of the work in the trenches has been done by public sector health workers rather than outsourcing to private sector. I'm not tooting the horn here for Trudeau and the Liberals, but rather for the institution of government itself. They're nailing this one, so credit where due.

But...they did make huge early blunders.

Running the wrong direction for the first three miles of a marathon doesn't mean you'll never finish. It just means you're terrible at running a marathon. And finishing ahead of someone who stops running halfway through doesn't erase your early mistakes, it just means that even if you made huge mistakes early on, eventually, you could cross the finish line too.

I'll eat my words. I definitely didn't give our government much chance of meeting their vaccination targets based on how they started out, but they've done well in the end. Now hopefully they work well enough and for long enough to solve this problem.

elections getting called in august they will get a majority in September. Gonna capitalize on people’s approval. Strike wile the irons hot.

I think they did pretty good as well securing the vaccines. I think there were some factors the helped many the poor uptake by the US that resulted in their factories getting approval to ship international.

Yep, before the fourth wave comes in the fall, just like the NDP did here last summer.

Blunders like contracting Pfizer and Moderna before the US govt did? Our government picked what have proved to be the three most effective vaccines out of the dozens in development and made commitments sooner than almost any other nation.

Back in winter you were saying that anything but being at the top of the global vax rankings was a fail. Now that we are, where's the credit?

I beleive he gave the credit to the provincial public health programs and I agree they deserve most of it

the US is a great big production machine when it gets rolling no one can compete. The iIS gov got the vaccine but the individual states poor public health(almost non existent) couldent get people to buy into vaccines.

Exhibition tells story of Spanish children used as vaccine fridges in 1803

Francisco Javier de Balmis used children to keep smallpox vaccine fresh on journey to Spain’s colonies

5079.jpg

When Francisco Javier de Balmis set off from Spain in 1803 to vaccinate the people in Spain’s colonies against smallpox he had no means of keeping the vaccine fresh, so he used children as his refrigerators.

An exhibition of documents relating to Balmis’s voyage has opened at the Archivo General de Indias in Seville and will be on display until 15 September.

From the documents, we now know for the first time the names and ages of the children who made what was perhaps the first international humanitarian mission possible.

Manuel Álvarez, who curated the exhibition, described it as “a homage to all the health workers who have struggled against Covid-19”.

Smallpox was killing millions in 18th century Europe but in 1796 the English physician Edward Jenner discovered that a bovine version of the disease worked as a vaccine.

Balmis, who was a military and court doctor, persuaded Spain’s King Carlos IV, whose daughter had died of smallpox, to fund the royal philanthropic vaccine expedition to Spain’s colonies.

The objective, visionary in its day, was not only to vaccinate the population but to set up vaccination centres in order to control any future outbreaks of the disease.

The expedition set off from A Coruña in north-west Spain with 22 orphans on board. The nine-year-old son of Isabel Zendal, who ran the local orphanage, was among them. Zendal served as nurse and carer on the trip.

The vaccine survived for only 12 days in vitro so Balmis’s technique was to infect two children every 10 days with the bovine version of smallpox and then take the serum from their pustules to infect two more children, and so on until they arrived at their destination with fresh serum with which to vaccinate people.

The children got sick but didn’t die and, although it seems barbaric, at the time it was considered quite normal. Jenner himself first tested his vaccine on an eight-year-old boy.

The original 22 children stayed in Mexico, where Balmis recruited a further 26 for the trip from Acapulco to the Philippines. The documents show that the children, all Mexican boys aged from four to 14, were handed over by their parents in exchange for payment. Some are described as “Spanish” and others as mestizos (mixed blood).

Three are listed as of unknown parentage and in the case of five others only their mother’s name appears in the documentation.

By the end of the campaign, about 300,000 people in the Canaries, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Mexico, the Philippines and China had received the vaccine for free.

“The strategy adopted by Balmis was a cheap, ingenious and pioneering solution to ensure that the vaccine arrived in the Americas in good condition,” said Alberto García-Basteiro, an epidemiologist and associate professor at the University of Barcelona.

“It’s likely that nowadays the strategy of using children to transport the vaccine would be criticised on ethical grounds, but the impact and benefits of the expedition cannot be denied.”

The Madrid hospital named after Isabel Zendal has played a key role during the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2020, when the Madrid government dispatched 2,500 soldiers to disinfect the region’s care homes, they dubbed it Operation Balmis.

more to that story

vaccines are less effective in older people.
Do you have a source for this ? I may be wrong but I think I remember when they presented the 96.8 percent vaccine efficiency we were specifically told it’s for all ages categories.
I’d love to see a statistic age/ vaccine effectiveness

B.C. launches Vax for BC program to get more people vaccinated

July 27, 2021
British Columbia’s provincial government has announced the launch of a new program called Vax for BC, which is aimed at getting more residents vaccinated with COVID-19 immunizations.

Starting on Tuesday, July 27, and lasting throughout the month of August, the government says Vax for BC will incorporate community events, vax vans and mobile clinics throughout “dozens of communities” in an attempt to get as many people vaccinated as possible with both first and second doses.

The Vax for BC program will allow eligible people to walk into events or mobile clinics and receive a vaccine without a scheduled appointment.

“With more than 80 per of eligible people in B.C. vaccinated with their first dose and more than 60 per cent fully vaccinated, we have made tremendous progress in our vaccine rollout,” said Adrian Dix, Minister of Health. “The next few weeks is a great opportunity for everyone not yet fully vaccinated to take advantage of the number of Vax for BC opportunities throughout B.C.”

On top of delivering drop-in vaccine opportunities around the province, the government says the program will provide a chance for people to share messages and notes of gratitude to pandemic heroes over the last 18 months.

British Columbians are encouraged to share written messages online, in their windows at home and in-person at vaccination locations.

“The rollout of mass COVID-19 vaccinations for B.C. has been the effort of a lifetime, and this accomplishment is shared by every healthcare worker who has helped us stay safe, every front-line worker who has kept our communities going and every person in B.C. who has chosen to be vaccinated – I am thankful to each and every one of you,” added Dr. Bonnie Henry, B.C.’s provincial health officer.

The province says that it will be working with individual health authorities in order to set up regional events, however, there will also be provincewide Walk-In Wednesdays at mass vaccination clinics.

The province says that on August 4, clinics throughout the province will reserve approximately 20,000 doses for walk-in vaccinations for anyone 12 years and older still needing their first dose or people eligible to receive their second dose.

The government says that as more British Columbians get vaccinated through the Vax for BC program, efforts will be gradually refocused to other programs that target the hardest to reach people.

“In the weeks ahead, B.C.’s vaccine strategy will shift toward more local public health clinics, community outreach efforts, mobile programs and pop-up clinics,” reads a statement from the Province. “These will take place within specific communities and populations throughout the province, where the need is greatest.”

According to the BC Centre of Disease Control (BCCDC), less than 5 per cent of COVID-19 cases from June 15 to July 15 were among fully vaccinated people.

A full list of Vax for BC events happening throughout the province is listed in the backgrounder section of the news release and is also available online: gov.bc.ca/vaxforbc

Easy Access COVID-19 Vaccination Clinics

Island Health is operating temporary immunization clinics in some communities to provide easier access to vaccination. The temporary clinics are open to anyone age 12 or older. Anyone who needs a first dose of COVID-19 vaccine can go to the clinic without an appointment. Appointments are required for second doses.

If your sitting on the fence best to get on it right away as the dose gap is 7 weeks and then you will need another 2 weeks till you are officially vaccinated. So lets do the math... You wait till Aug 4 for your first shot. Your 2nd shot is Sept 22 and 2 weeks later will put at Oct 6. If we start seeing cases go up and the hospitals getting filled with non-vaccinated people, it wont be another lockdown it will be a lockout.

You gave up your right to criticize the vaccine rollout when you turned down two different vaccines that you were offered. It's just like voting.
