Popped out to Becher today in the ol' yak with a pal. Jigged through quite a bit of bait but only hooked into two fish all day. Landed one around 3-4 lbs and lost a better one. My pal hooked into a decent one, but it shook itself loose, too. Crabbing was a little better, but tons of just unders. The sun was glorious.

Was out yesterday for the first time in a couple months. Tried Whirl Bay and Pedder. Lots of small springs, from shakers to 55 cm. Nothing worth keeping. Lost a couple that felt a bit bigger. Completely different from last winter when average size was way bigger. We also struck out on crab with lots of undersize and a few red rock. Quite a lot of boats out competing for the same tack out front of Pedder.

Beautiful morning out there today. First skunk in a while. Whirl Bay and the Navy can. Some bait at the later.

Paddled out to the Navy can yesterday with some pals to take advantage of the beauty day. Jigged through masses of bait all morning and ended up landing a few - the biggest being around 6 lbs. Unfortunately, two of the three lost were solid fish. One rushed the surface only to dog me back down to 75'. It looked to be in the low teens, but I didn't get a great look. Telling myself that they were for sure wild fish. Eeee. Swapping out the assist hooks before I head out again.

Dropped the crab trap in a spot that's normally pretty good and only had red rocks and females with much of the bait still in the cage. Pretty sure I need to retire my trap as the rust is starting to show.

Took the kayak out in Sooke yesterday with a couple o' pals. I was prepared for it to be cold and wet, but it turned into a beauty of a morning with a fair bit of sun and very little wind. Managed to hook into quite a few fish, too, most of them clipped. Nothing crazy big - biggest was a little under 7 lbs (a thin 70cm). The pals also got into some, all similar sizes. The baitfish in the belly confirmed I was using the right jig for the occasion.

It's been a fairly slow winter for me compared to previous years, but after yesterday I have renewed hope that I can fill my license. One more successful day will do it. It feels like an accomplishment from the ol' kayak.

Man, there's nothing like the taste of a winter chinook!

Snuck out for a quick morning kayak fish in Becher with a couple o' pals today. Slower than last week, but we managed to get a few between us. One 7 lber went home with my pal. Had one hit that nearly ripped the rod out of my hands, but it didn't stick. Encountered one proper school on the sounder, but my jig took the opportunity to tangle itself in that critical moment. Derp.

There seem to be quite a few squid around, too. We caught a few on our glowy salmon jigs and it looked like they were all over. Crabbing was good for a change. Turns out rusty traps are, in fact, bad. The new trap worked great. Oh, and the weather was waaaay nicer than forecast. What a beaut of a mornin'.

Was out from Pedder today, for the first time in over a month. Counted 9 boats by the can. Not much action. Released an undersize and a nice 10 ish pound wild. No other bites in 4 hours. Tried spoons and hoochies with various leader lengths. Talked to another fisherman who had no luck either. Seems a bit slow out there.

Fished Pedder Bay Sunday 830 to 1 and there were 8 boats out fishing. Steady action and hooked up 10 times and kept 3 clipped (8,7,5 lb.) Had a couple of nice fish on but lost them.
We used bait and a 3 inch green glow spoon, and bait hooked up all the larger fish. Fish were at 140 ft on the DR in 140 to 160 ft of water.
Pulled one crab trap and it was loaded with females. Last weekend it had 7 keepers.
