Hey Cutplug! Im taking some more newbies out this week and was thinking about heading out of Cheanuh. When you say get to Cheanuh early to get a parking spot for the truck and trailer, how early is early?

We fished out of Cheanuh at 8:30 this morning. I asked about the parking and it turns out it was only for the tribal journeys that was taking place the other day. I parked in overflow and no issues. The kids running the marina did a great job keeping the launch running smoothly.

The fishing was hot again today at the Head. Didn't see many springs though. Released one big sockeye and 2 wild Coho. Kept 11 pinks and one 7lb Hatch coho. We were done by 11.

Thanks for the fishing report. And thanks for the info on the parking at Cheanuh. Much more helpful than the previous response to my question.
Cheers

As early as possible? Not trying to be cheeky but parking is limited there.

I've been there lots before and haven't had to use the overflow But it sounded like they are reorganizing the parking area and something has changed other than the launch rates. Yeah, early is definitely the best time to arrive. Thanks for the info. I'll be there in a few days when the wind is a little more manageable.
Cheers

Good to hear it was a one off and that overflow is available. My apologies to Cheanuh and you folks if my information was incorrect. It’s what I heard that day so passed it along.

How have others been doing crabbing lately?
I set traps in the harbour today. Lots of rock crab and small dungeness.
Not that many years ago I would do really well in a couple of spots on large dungeness but that has definitely changed. Has the commercial gear made that much of a difference?
Or have others noticed a change in the last bunch of years.??

Its terrible from what I heard from my commercial buddies is water "turned over" about 2 months ago and it hasnt recouped yet I get a few now and then but its not as great at it used to be, Got some nice fish yesterday and also got check by fisheries in that huge rubber boat they have, they check my lic and guest lic and my assortment of hoochies and spoons of the gear in my tray that I have been using, then left happy with everything . Good to see them out there....

Late start. Kids played cards till 3 last night. Fished 2:30-6:30

It was really bumpy. So fished near shore in 70-120' contour. From secretary island to beechy head. Got into 6 cohos lost four just as we were netting and wave would tilt boat just enough net rim knock hook right off. Well the two that was netted were both hatchery. So we came to the consensus those lost were all wilds. We also got 3 springs. Largest 66cm.

At one time when we were trolling westward I told the kids current too strong we've stayed stationary for past 10 min let's pickup and motor to secretary to start our trolling again. Kids was saying no no we are moving. Well we had a bite and it was a tiger rockfish. Have to say that convinced them we were way too slow.

Oh at one point daughter yelled rod 2 fish on !! She ran and grabbed it. As she was reeling in she commented this is one weird fish. When it broke surface son said wow seaweed. When she got it closer what do you know it's a bird!! Caught a bird at 60' !!! Good thing hook didn't puncture through bird. It only wrapped on the wing. Released and it quickly dove back down into water.

That's definitely one catch THATLL be hard to copy.

Oh all were caught on Irish cream coho killer

Launched at Cheanuh this morning and lines in the water before Aldridge at 6:45. Dropped the DR to 60ft and immediately had a hit. Landed a nice 77cm. 15-20 min later my buddy lands an almost identical one. Moved straight out and got into pinks so moved to the trap area. Kept two small coho and 1 pink. Couple of unclipped coho and small springs in the mix. All fish 60-70ft and on an assortment of spoons. The two 77cm were caught on herring aid shinny G.

Calm waters yesterday made for nice fishing. Started at Muir but no bait no fish marking so moved to otter where the fleet was. Lots of shakers and a few pinks. Did not see many if any springs being caught.
Trolled back up the beach to Muir again late morning. Started marking fish and bite came on a bit around 11 am. Lost a screamer. Put 2 springs in the box and missed a couple more. Bait out fished gear for springs today but only ran bait one side because shakers and pinks were piling through it. Fun day of fishing with family.

Well after being beached by endless gales over the long week-end, we finally managed to get out today. (Might have gone yesterday but BWD downgraded the usual gales too late for us to react)

So launched at Sunny Shores at 5:30am in semi darkness and rain. Flat calm in front and so lines down just after 6am. Little herrings in t/head as usual. Released an undersized chinook, then an unclipped coho and it all went quiet for an hour. We then had a decent hit and boated our first chinook of the season. Only 8lbs but it was a start. At 9:00am more less on the tide change we had a huge hit in roughly the same area. Rod bounced vertical and everything. The fish felt very heavy and took off for about 100 metres total in three consecutive bursts. I thought “This one is going to be over” and so it proved. When I finally got all the line back and the fish was netted it went 83cms! Darn!! :confused:A photo before release in the net is below. Sun came out later, but nothing more in tight after that except unclipped cohos, so at 11:30am we went out for pinks and managed to finally get a clipped coho of 6lb off Secretary. Called it at 2:00pm just as wind came up. Nice day with three species of salmon.

Unfortunately more wind for tomorrow and Friday although former might be OK really early. Hope to get an 80cm some time this season if the wind lets us out!! :(
