2024 Campbell River Reports

Went out on Wednesday, beautiful weather and great fishing all around. Lots of big wild Coho but not too many Chinook on the south end of Quadra with the biggest Coho of the day being around the 12 pound mark, which I initially thought was a Chinook by how broad it was! Surface plugs and bucktails were a blast, no more than 25' deep and a few hitting right at the surface after being spotted finning and jumping. Picked up a nice 73 cm ling on the way in as well.

Went out to catch the tide last evening, limited in an hour and then floated just enjoying being on the water afterwards. All on a bare plug in about 140 feet of water 10-20 feet off the bottom, wife has asked me to stop bringing home fish as we're out of freezer space 😂

Thanks! Around the 75-80 cm nose to fork and high teens I think, I release all the wild ones that are releasable and try to just keep hatchery fish. Thankfully that fish was hooked right in the nose like a lot of returning fish seem to be so it was an easy and clean release.

A true sportsman, nice to see and I follow the same philosophy for the benefit of future generations! 👊

Thank you! Nice to hear someone else is doing the same as well! I use smaller hooks to that end as well, I don't go bigger than 3/0 anymore especially as I've noticed the extra weight affects plug action in addition to substantially less injuries to eyes etc.

Had quite the day. 82 nautical miles and 10 hours later it's safe to say we covered some ground! Started off on the north side of Sonora, not too much action with one fish being netted before we trolled on eastwards to the tip. Did some exploring in the back bays before stopping at Green sea and the bluffs at plumper Bay without much more action.

Decided to make one more stop at the south end of quadra before heading as the tide was perfect, and not 30 minutes later got taken on a wild ride by a 100cm-ish tyee! Smoked a 4 inch plug and took us into the tidal rips with the boat spinning around in circles and a corresponding cluster on deck. Unfortunately had to net the fish as line was around its snout and it was impossible to safely remove the hook with the whirlpools whipping the boat around, quick removal in the water and a second for a picture before sending him kicking strongly back down to hopefully pass those genes on!

Fished south of the lighthouse, 280-300 ft , 270 on DR. #602 plug.
Caught one, 72cm, lost another around the same size. Both hit hard and then spun their way to the boat, pretty lame actually!
The second one must have flipped the hook at the boat. The water got like a washing machine with the NW wind and ebb....came in after just 2 hours. Time to can!

Looking to go out one last time. Anyone fished the green/red can or hump area in the last few days. Are there still coho and springs there? and bait?

Fished yesterday, green can. Lots of bait, coho hatchery and wild. Got our fish on 4”plugs and spoons 75-230’. Watch for those shakers to keep off.
