2024 Campbell River Reports

We headed up to Sep Head / Deepwater Bay today in search of the ever elusive and wily Chum Salmon. We were accompanied by my 2 young Grand Daughters aged 9 &11. They are experts on the rod and normally bring positive success to the trip. Today was no exception. We had the gear in the water shortly after 10 AM and were done with a 4 person limit by 1 PM. Included in the tally was an unlucky hatchery coho. Anywhere from about 80 - 110 feet or so on the riggers with standard pink and blue or similar hoochies. We were happily surprised by the seemingly large average size of the fish. There were several other boats up there, most of whom also had the nets out quite frequently.

Winter chinook are here!!

Took a bit to figure it out but ended the day limited out, 230-280' right on the bottom with black plugs. Best way to winterize the boat is to use it!

Got out again on another stunning day, the couple hours before and after high tide provided the most action. Nearly all the retention size fish came within the first 90 minutes with a couple nice hatchery red and white springs going into the cooler all caught on plugs right on the bottom or 25' above it. Stopped for a lunch time jig break and pulled in a pacific cod to cap another stunning day.

Just curious -do you ever run a Kone zone then a plug 6 ft above and behind it as a dummy??

Managed to get out for the first time in a while with an absolutely stunning weather window! Fishing has definitely slowed down however, lost one decent fish and had a few to the boat that might have been legal but not worth increasing chances of mortality for. A few shakers in the mix too, only saw one net out over 4 hours and bait was hard to come by as well. I've found it's a matter of finder a school of fish and tracking them which is what has given me success in the past. Managed to do that for an hour today as well however the fish were just small, beautiful day regardless and the freezer is still looking full anyway.

Only about 3 bait balls over 4 hours, pretty sparse. The two hours after low slack was the best however I've found the high slack to be more productive but ya gotta work with what you've got sometimes!
