2013 Bamfield Tuna Shootout

We were in the deeps off Barkley Canyon. I'll try to get coords for anyone heading out this week. Today's a write off, tomorrow looks bad as well. Wed, Thurs and Friday look like they could go either way. Fingers crossed.

Swells up and suns out. Sitting out the anchor for Hali now!

Ps someone left me a voice message relating to the shoot out but I accidentally deleted it. If that was you please call back.

I think 48.16 x 126.10 was pretty close to the spot we all converged on... working from memory here, so apologies if that's not exact numbers

(NOT a hijack!)
Kelly, friends dropped over for dinner last night...trying to impress us with fresh Chantrelles (it worked), so I threw some tuna loins on the bbq and added some blacktail backstraps to the mix.
Can't live in a better place!!!

This was todays scene with our crew relaxing most of the day

Some crews headed out inshore for hali and coho with success

Here is a shot of what we're facing. A big low pressure system moved through Sunday, kicking up a big swell that hasn't settled down yet. Behind that low was unsettled weather with lines of rain squalls that we are currently experiencing. On the right is the next big low pressure system that is currently sitting off the Aleutian Islands in Alaska. It is going to make landfall this weekend likely making things unfishable. In-between the two systems is a weather window that a number of crews are hoping stays open long enough for a few offshore assaults. Everyone please do a dance tonight to appease the weather gods!

Are you sure these guys name Why Knot? Because my name is Why Knot also, I can not see the name on the boat, my boat is sitting in Bamfield at Don,s place . It is interesting!

There was talk of us staying out at the canyon overnight, but of course weather permitting, thanks for all the pics guys, me and the gang pretty excited to get up and get out there. See ya wednesday afternoon.. and I'll be doing a weather dance for sure..

Boats iced up, beer getting cold, ready to go. Rolling out tmr around 6:30, can't wait! Did the dance last night!

Is there access to groceries and some beers in Bamtown or should we load up on all that we will need.

Cheers,

The coastguard gave a green light today although it was very big water out there! Most boats chose not to make the run with the swells still so large. A few boats are keeping an eye on tomorrows forecast and are poised to make the run. The weather forecasts are all over depending on what site you look at. Thursday is still looking like a good bet and the first half of Friday which means there is a few boats looking at spending that night out there. This is all last minute weather dependant and things could change quickly. Tomorrow evening there will be a number of boats prepping for thursdays run in front of Mills Landing. It would be great if we could all meet, create a plan and spread out to get on the fish. I will be running tomorrows weigh in at Mckay Bay between 4-8pm but will likely be around Mill's when boats aren't weighing in.

Bearcove there are groceries and beer in town but the East and West general store close at 5 pm so it might not be a bad idea to bring your own. Our sponsors (Longwood Brewery) just topped up our derby beer supply, I'll be bringing it in tomorrow morn. I have your Captains bucket as well, ill try to bring that over tomorrow afternoon as well as a flat of beer for captains to BS over on the dock.

Here is our small window of high pressure starting to develop.

I know how bad the cell and internet service can be up there Kelly. I think your doing an outstanding job with updating us on here. Thank you big time :).

We will be heading up tomorrow just after lunch. Meeting at Mills sounds good. Can't wait to put some faces to names and meet a bunch more tuna addicts lol. I'm so stoked!!!

How is the ice situation at Mills? Should we bring some up anyways?
