2012 TUNA trips

Damn. Great Job and story Tykkyt! Wish I would have jogged schedules and made a run with you...sounds like you did everything right there. Very cool to see you found the blue water and it spiked quickly when you did.

Look forward to seeing you hopefully in the shootout, or catching a lift sometime out of La Push. Sounded like a lot of fun trying the US location.

Dak, we may see you the first weekend 21,22,23 weather permitting. Really hope we get a shot and its all not moving out..will msg if we are a go.

PS That is definitely one nice dock in La Push!

Hey great work Terry, blazing the trail in LaPush. I have to figure out how to get their from the water. If I don't have to clear customs in Friday Harbour would be easy run in July to start Tuna early. Look forward to talking with you about whole trip. Are you coming to Bamfield week of 22-29?

Great adventure Terry! I really enjoyed reading that. Congrats on your first tuna!!! That is something I really want to do next year. Can't wait to read about the dock story. Did you have to buy a Washington fishing license?

a good day on the water terry, sounds like a real good day, looking forward to everyone in the shoot out, it sounds like some are going out on the 20th, mabey osama and myself can get on tuna dons boat that day, lots of boats coming. we will see you later this week dak. looking forward to this event.

Nice report Terry. That's roughly the area I've been fishing for tuna only I made the run out of Neah Bay. Funny thing - I've never been to La Push and learned more about the marina/facilities there from a canuck than I've seen on any of the american fishing boards. If you'd post the number for the place that provided the ice, I'd appreciate it. There may be a La Push run in my future. If some of you canucks want to come across for a tuna jamboree out of Neah or La Push next year, I'd be happy to organize some kind of informal/semi-formal get together.

The problem is where to clear customs. Coming this direction from Canadian waters, I think your stuck with clearing in Friday Harbor, Pt. Roberts or Port Angeles. If you have a nexus card you might get lucky and be passed through without a check if you call into the U.S. customs. That's what usually happens coming this way if you're American but I rather doubt that the Canadians would get a pass without clearing customs in person. The Canadian customs officers are always nicer to Americans than the reverse. In the old days, you could clear customs at Neah Bay but no more.

Anyone know what the washington licensing requirements are for canadians 25+ miles out? I believe Nitinat Canyon is mostly in the U.S.

I don't know. I specifically sent an email to the Wa Dept of Fish and Wildlife asking them where the WA regulations end and I never got an answer. Most of Nitnat Canyon is in U.S. waters. Enforcement out that far is slim to none but it would be nice to know the answer and make sure one is not breaking the law.

Hope you can make it FB. Slivo and Fifth Element are both planning on a run this weekend. May head offshore as early as thursday depending on the forecast. The more boats we get out there the more water we can cover to improve our odds.

I don't have much time tonite... but I did have a long talk on Friday in La Push with the local Fish and Wildlife officer ( very pretty 30 something BTW ). She confirmed that a Non - resident license was required for Tuna in Wash waters (unless you DO NOT bring the fish into a US port ) ie OK to leave from US port without a license provided you are returning to Canada and the fish never reach a US port)
I had picked one up in Forks the Weds I arrived - $65 for the season

I'll make time tomo for the rest of the story - thanks for all the nice comments

Back online here finally.

Finish my last day of guiding this Wednesday, hope to be heading out with the pack as early as Thursday should the weather stay good.

Lotsa guys coming for the week of the 22- 29, some good prizes being handed out for participation and a good sized pack of boats plying the chuck should make for a hell of a time.

Looking forward everyone!

Jeff

I will be looking into this option found on Homeland US website

Canadian Border Boat Landing Permit (I-68)
Canadian Border Boat Landing Permit (I-68) applicants for admission into the United States by small pleasure boats are inspected and issued an I-68 permit for the entire boating season. The I-68 permit allows boaters to enter the United States from Canada for recreational purposes with only the need to report to CBP by telephoning in their arrival.

Just looking today at some shots for the area around 48.40 127.00. Looks interesting with a little bit of blue water in there. Kind of a weird thumb of warm water sticking inwards but I've been told that can be a good thing.

Weds and Thurs look great weather wise. Light winds and long period swell.

Some info for La Push: Marina # 360 374 5392 ( harbourmaster and assist hm have their cell numbers on office door but I didn't record ) High Tide Seafoods # 360 374 9494 (chip ice and cooler/freezer space) mgr - cell # 360 640 4538, Oceanside Resort and RV # 360 374 4338 ( very nice buildings, right next to beach and great view)
My waypoint at James Is. / mouth of river bar to Cape Beale is 66 miles, Cape Beale to waypoint of first fish is 78 miles.
I left La Push and ran out 40 -48 miles on a heading of 240-235 to the warm water. On Friday, as I packed up, a local 'old timer' who had been fishing Sablefish, suggested that the next time, I should try running more SW. He said usually the "tuna boys" run out 210 - 205 heading until they get to warm water. That would be quite south of the bottom end of JDF canyon, but looking at the charts, it is still where the continental shelf drops off to much deeper water.
My 'funny' dock story:
I get back to the marina by 615pm ( worried that I won't be able to get fuel that late in the day - They have a cardlock sys. so no prob after hours, my debit card didn't work, but visa was fine - $500 limit for those of you w big tanks )
Turns out there is still 4 guys still at the marina office... Keep in mind, I'm still super excited and thrilled to have caught fish my first try ( and maybe, I've had a few beer on the way back in )
"Hi, is it too late to get fuel???" They explain the cardlock sys. and that I need to authorize an amount I want..." well, gee, I don't know... I've never filled my boat w US gallons before AND I've never gone tuna fishing before, so I'll have to guess..." One fellow asks, " going out tomorrow then?" Now, I start jumping up and down and talking very fast... " No, I was just out! and I got 3!!!! and I've never been here before, and I've never caught tuna before, blabber, blabber, blabber...." Second guy.. " you got 3?" " ya, I went out towards the JDF canyon but the water was cold so I went south west and the water got warmer and then I got my first fish!!!!!" "My cell phone doesn't work here and there's no wi -fi signal so I had a 2 day old temp chart to go by" "I'm really glad I found the warm water by driving around, I thought I was SCREWED when it cooled off!!" First guy again, "so you just drove around until you found warmer water?" " Ya, I since it was sunny, I heard you should use bright colored lures, so I got one on a mex flag, and a gold colored xrap, and the third was on a bright blue n white hootchie daisy chain I made." " Daisy chain what?, what's a hootchie????" "Ummm, I think you guys call em squid skirts, Canadians call em hootchies ( I hold my thumb and finger 4" apart ) I like to make my own gear, so I'm REALLY pleased that worked"
First guy turns to fourth guy - "hear that 'J'?, you drive down here from Canada, make your own gear, and just drive out until you find warm water, and catch tuna all by yourself" - to me -"where did you say the warm water was?" "UMMMM, I think I was about 10 miles SW of the JDF canyon" First to fourth again - "J, weren't you thinking of going tuna fishing tomorrow? " Me before he can answer - " I could get my numbers off the chartplotter, if you want? I made a few waypoints ( proud as can be! and trying to be helpful n share info )"
He snarls, " NO, I DON'T NEED YOUR NUMBERS" and slams the office door going out!
??????, I turn around to the other three, wondering what I said wrong???
They're holding onto the counter, pissing themselves laughing!!!!!! I stand there stunned, clueless to whats just happened
First guy, gives me a one armed hug and says " Don't worry about him son... he's an butt and the biggest bragger here, He's been skunked two days in a row, and was just telling us about going farther south cause there's no fish left here and EVERYONE should start using big jet heads to attract the last singles before they disappear" HA HA HA - He NEVER tells anyone where he has been OR whats been working and I've know him for years!!!!
Let him go pout - good for you to find some fish - HA HA HA"

So that was the end of my first day of tuna fishing - I am still grinning as I write this
I'll be in Bamfield like everyone else - if we get some water back - sure hope so ( my kids can eat beans for another week )
