Some info for La Push: Marina # 360 374 5392 ( harbourmaster and assist hm have their cell numbers on office door but I didn't record ) High Tide Seafoods # 360 374 9494 (chip ice and cooler/freezer space) mgr - cell # 360 640 4538, Oceanside Resort and RV # 360 374 4338 ( very nice buildings, right next to beach and great view)
My waypoint at James Is. / mouth of river bar to Cape Beale is 66 miles, Cape Beale to waypoint of first fish is 78 miles.
I left La Push and ran out 40 -48 miles on a heading of 240-235 to the warm water. On Friday, as I packed up, a local 'old timer' who had been fishing Sablefish, suggested that the next time, I should try running more SW. He said usually the "tuna boys" run out 210 - 205 heading until they get to warm water. That would be quite south of the bottom end of JDF canyon, but looking at the charts, it is still where the continental shelf drops off to much deeper water.
My 'funny' dock story:
I get back to the marina by 615pm ( worried that I won't be able to get fuel that late in the day - They have a cardlock sys. so no prob after hours, my debit card didn't work, but visa was fine - $500 limit for those of you w big tanks )
Turns out there is still 4 guys still at the marina office... Keep in mind, I'm still super excited and thrilled to have caught fish my first try ( and maybe, I've had a few beer on the way back in )
"Hi, is it too late to get fuel???" They explain the cardlock sys. and that I need to authorize an amount I want..." well, gee, I don't know... I've never filled my boat w US gallons before AND I've never gone tuna fishing before, so I'll have to guess..." One fellow asks, " going out tomorrow then?" Now, I start jumping up and down and talking very fast... " No, I was just out! and I got 3!!!! and I've never been here before, and I've never caught tuna before, blabber, blabber, blabber...." Second guy.. " you got 3?" " ya, I went out towards the JDF canyon but the water was cold so I went south west and the water got warmer and then I got my first fish!!!!!" "My cell phone doesn't work here and there's no wi -fi signal so I had a 2 day old temp chart to go by" "I'm really glad I found the warm water by driving around, I thought I was SCREWED when it cooled off!!" First guy again, "so you just drove around until you found warmer water?" " Ya, I since it was sunny, I heard you should use bright colored lures, so I got one on a mex flag, and a gold colored xrap, and the third was on a bright blue n white hootchie daisy chain I made." " Daisy chain what?, what's a hootchie????" "Ummm, I think you guys call em squid skirts, Canadians call em hootchies ( I hold my thumb and finger 4" apart ) I like to make my own gear, so I'm REALLY pleased that worked"
First guy turns to fourth guy - "hear that 'J'?, you drive down here from Canada, make your own gear, and just drive out until you find warm water, and catch tuna all by yourself" - to me -"where did you say the warm water was?" "UMMMM, I think I was about 10 miles SW of the JDF canyon" First to fourth again - "J, weren't you thinking of going tuna fishing tomorrow? " Me before he can answer - " I could get my numbers off the chartplotter, if you want? I made a few waypoints ( proud as can be! and trying to be helpful n share info )"
He snarls, " NO, I DON'T NEED YOUR NUMBERS" and slams the office door going out!
??????, I turn around to the other three, wondering what I said wrong???
They're holding onto the counter, pissing themselves laughing!!!!!! I stand there stunned, clueless to whats just happened
First guy, gives me a one armed hug and says " Don't worry about him son... he's an butt and the biggest bragger here, He's been skunked two days in a row, and was just telling us about going farther south cause there's no fish left here and EVERYONE should start using big jet heads to attract the last singles before they disappear" HA HA HA - He NEVER tells anyone where he has been OR whats been working and I've know him for years!!!!
Let him go pout - good for you to find some fish - HA HA HA"
So that was the end of my first day of tuna fishing - I am still grinning as I write this
I'll be in Bamfield like everyone else - if we get some water back - sure hope so ( my kids can eat beans for another week )
