The only thing that'll change for me is being more insistent that friends split costs on trips from now on. It's not only the fuel but the non stop maintenance. Boat ownership is more than double what it used to be for me and it's really starting to hurt. In this market there isn't much around to downsize to.

Guys are going to have to start selling "chicken" to pay for boating..lol

A liter of San Pellagrino ~ $2.59
A liter of O.J. ~ $2.99
A liter of I.D. coffee creamer $5.49
A liter of beer ~$6.10
A liter of cheap whiskey ~ $33.80

Fuel, that costs an enormous amount of money to find, extract, ship, refine, distribute, deliver and then pump into your pleasure boat, is still cheaper than bubbly water. You are competing in a global market with the semi-truckers, the farmers, the military, the airlines and Fed Ex. There is limited capacity and those guys need it 'way more than you do.

When I cannot or choose not to afford the cost of anything else, I quit buying it. If that happens often enough, the price may drop - Economics 101. Some of those major buyers that you compete with will pay $2.50, $5.00 or $10.00 per liter. High bidders get the goods. Yet some boaters still whine about fuel prices 'cause they will never grasp this reality. Consider a different hobby. I'll be boating all summer.

Sky High Gas prices Batman! Just saw a news report saying prediction is for $6.00 USD per gallon - JP Morgan says will happen by August. That translated to CAD/litre is ($7.73 CAD/US gallon) $2.03 per litre in the US. GIven the current spread based on additional taxes and oil company profit taking ($0.63/l) that makes it likely gas prices here by August will be around $2.66/litre. Better get a bank loan before you go fishing.

not the greatest comparisons, but I get where you are trying to come from.

I’m glad you’ll be boating all summer, and it sure sounds like you’ll be doing more than I will be! If you can say the price of gas won’t bother your boating habits, that’s amazing. If you can still tell me the price of gas won’t affect anything and everything else in your life, I want some of what you are drinking and smoking!

X2, i dont drink 50ltrs of cheap whiskey or orange juice in a wk, but I do burn that on my commute to work every wk, or drink 150ltrs of cheap whiskey in a day, but i will burn that in gas in a day in the boat,
Plus BIG business fleets, whether its trucks/planes/ ships and government contracts price their fuel contracts out into the future, not day to day pricing like 99.9% of public.
These huge increases WILL affect majority of public, prepare for the freefall of economy, its coming

I'm fortunate to be a retired carpenter with no debt, with a decent pension and I still have the ability to work. The prime reason I work is for the social activity. The secondary reason I do that is to afford my boating life-style. I make enough working part-time, to fill my 500 liter boat tank in about 1-1/2 days of work. It's win-win for me. If stuff gets more costly, and it will, I'll work a bit more. When that ability changes, and it will, I'll adapt, once more.

Gas was 55 cents a gallon, when I was in my early twenties. My house cost me $16,000. Somehow, I've managed to pay for over 50 years, the constantly inflating costs of everything. I've become used to that and I've never been better off. I'm fortunate and grateful.

BTW, Statscan indicates fuel expenses form only about 3-4% of overall household expenses.

I grew up in the 50's, where nuclear holocaust was a real possibility. I survived the early 80's economic melt-down, Y2K, and later, the 2008 "crisis". The doom-and-gloom crowd has forecast the cataclismic end as far back as I can remember. These situations are created by men, not nature. You can always find troubling things, if you look hard enough.

Canadians have better lives than 90% of our planet, yet we still b*tch and moan. I have never bought in to that thinking. What good comes out of it? That attitude would only hold me back from reality and the positive and enthusiastic attitude that helps me stay healthy, that keeps me enjoying every, single day that I have left.

Appreciate the positivity! I’m just about to make real money for the first time in about 10 years so this free fall resession talk is a little much. If we focus on the negative we will find it! Let’s focus on their is a good job for about everyone.

It is time to pressure politicians on the percentage gas taxes that are turning into a windfall, the same way the BC property tax purchase has, to help those who need to commute or make money using fuel. Where are the BC Libs on this?

Rinse and repeat.

"Got to wonder how this is going to affect boating and boats for sale. All those folks that bought boats at inflated prices during Covid might start rethinking their purchase."

The above quote is from the OP's first post on this topic. It is related to fishing and boating, so aligns with this fishing forum.

Please keep this thread on the track it was intended to be on.

The topic was $2 - $3 gas, I believe and most posts here have related closely to how we cope and how that change in fuel costs effects our boating and fishing. That certainly aligns. Threads meander but this one has remained quite tight.

One answer to the OP is that decent boats have never sold so expensive, if you can find one. Prices remain high and people seem to be enjoying this recreation.

I agree, to add to that the wealth transfer happening now from generations to another generation is keeping things rolling along to a certain extent,

To keep on track....Boats are not necessities to majority of public,(to some they are like a drug) gas prices will have a huge impact on use of and prices will adjust accordingly.

I called Roche Hatbour this morning. $6.02usd/us gal which converts to 2.06cdn liter at 1.30 exchange.
Tsehum Harbour fuel docks are at 2.57cdn /liter retail and 2.32 bulk commercial rate. It is looking pretty appetizing to run down for lunch and throw a G note or 2G in. On a thousand liters saving $250 canadian or $500 retail pays for the run and lunch....almost.
