Everyone has their own method but mine is more focused on how to apply the pattern than strictly what is used to do it. I'll leave it there as it's one of the trade secrets that took me quite a while to dial in, however there's plenty of youtube videos that cover the topic!

Louie’s are always welcome on my boat. Both my sons first tyee’s where caught on Louies
The original pilchard pattern had the metallic blue back with silver scales on side with a grey belly along with the chartreuse strip over it and red lip pictured on the bottom of the 2 plugs. After it was retired in 2013 I tweaked the pattern too a glow white belly the following year.


The following season my youngest son caught his first tyee on this 639 bd plug



My favourite plug was the 4 1/2 inch Louie with the Jack Smith aka “Fish Bin” pattern

Here is a couple of B C warriors for your perusal, a 5 1/2 Rex Field and a Lyman 5 ". If I am correct The Fishinator plugs are based on Lyman design.

Plug absolutely can hold their own unless fish are on tiny bait. Try a 5" classic 600. Outfished anchovies on many occasions. Nootka inside and back side of Malcom come to mind.

On one trip to Ukee we had 4 people on the boat and a 7” Tomic #700 caught a limit of halibut for everyone on board. No halibut caught on any other gear.

Some plugs work and some plugs don't, even the same color from the same box. That said they can be tuned and altered...sometimes you just need to find the right one. Better fight on plugs

I buy 4” Lyman blanks and there is a significant difference in size. Some are longer, some shorter and some fatter and some thinner.

two reasons why:
1-. they need to be trolled fast. 3 plus’MPH.
2- you need to have at least 40 feet of line out before you clip into downrigger. they need to swim erratically. too short of line hamstrings it’s ability to swim naturally.
