Yet another little tinny build

After a lot of browsing, dreaming and planning it was finally time to get to work.

The goal:
19-21’ centre console
- self bailing
- 50usg + fuel capacity
- as beamy as possible
- small windshield/ roof
- as much fishing room as possible
basically all I wanted was a floating tank- a fishing camping adventure machine.

I could not find a manufactured boat that ticked all the boxes, lots came close but nothing was a 100 percent match.
I had the same issue when looking for a builder, a lot offered close to what I wanted but nothing was perfect. I also wanted to do as much work myself as possible, which understandably only worked with a few different outfits.

I ended up connecting with a friend of a friend that happens to be a fabricator sharing the same end goal.

This will be a thread to share updates, lessons learned, take suggestions and feedback positive or “ that’s not how I would have done it”.

The power plan will be 150 or 4 cyl 200. Going into this I did not anticipate power being the hard thing to secure.

I also did not anticipate aluminum pricing shooting through the roof. Luckily my deposit was in early enough.

The base boat plan was a kit from Conrad Yachts. We have tweaked the plan changing the console and a few other aesthetics.

1/4” bottom, 18 degree dead rise, just over 20’ from bow to pod 8’ beam with a bit of bow flare to keep the eyes happy.

Picked up the material end of October.

Here’s the photo updates this far:

Super cool. I have eyed that kit before with a mind to try building one myself. What did you change from the stock design?

Otto Rauch has built a few of those, if it is the 20' version, (although it say 18 on the pdf) they are a sharp looking hull.

The specs say 150 max, are you going to put a 200 on it?

Are you leaving the console that far forward?

@ryanb we didn’t change anything on the written plans besides swapping the console for one of his others. All changes will be done on the fab side of things. Changing up the transom, bow lockers and a few little trim details.

@Aquaholic 200 is max. The website isn’t totally up to date. Console is defiantly forward but not as far forward as that picture. Sacrificing some pounding in the chop for a rear working space is something I can live with.

Few week update
-Floor is in
-2x 3” pvc conduit running below the floor from inside transom locker to inside console
-Starting to form up bow and transom lockers.
bow will have dry storage under the bench, anchor locker hatch on the vertical.
- transom will have batteries/ electrical/ fuel filter on starboard side locker. Middle will be split fish box above and smaller door to 8” inspection plate to access into the bilge. Starboard will hold wash down pump and tool box/ random gear.
All motor rigging will enter into the centre smaller locker and be distributed from there.
- hull stiffner tacked in
- kicker bracket still to come.
- needs a good de-greasing.
Should get a good amount complete over the holidays.
She’s complete from the water line downstarting to look more like a boat and less like a pile of over priced aluminum.

New Years update
Lots of fitting accomplished over the holidays, a ton of welding to complete now.
Next few week plan is to weld it out, form hatch doors, kicker bracket and other mounting tabs.

How long of shaft are you designing it for?

What welder are you using? Is this your first time welding a boat together?

I've been dreaming for a decade about learning welding and putting a boat together myself, but it's daunting for someone with no welding experience. But, I'm getting close to pulling the trigger and starting to learn.

I wish I could take welding credit, another guy is on the gun, I just scratch my head and run the grinder.
It’s going together well, it definitely helps having his fabrication experience he makes a lot of tricky parts go quickly. With that said I don’t think it’s unobtainable as long as you had some welding knowledge.

I was this close as well, Cope had the plans and cut files all ready on file, had a lease return engine and controls lined up, talked to 3 builders, 2 of which were in no hurry to discuss anything, so luckily I found a great used hull of exactly what I was originally looking for. Used was still less expensive, but the product is tough to find. Good luck, another tinny thread would be sweet.

Love the boat build. You are making great progress. Nice tube/pipe bends. I found that very hard to do. I still have some left its so hard! Glad I found your thread. You have given me some inspiration to finish those last few bits!
