Which new moocher reel?

Are the Shimano 2000 series not still available?
Only improvement the 4000 made, if I recall, was line capacity, but I've never run out of line with a 2000, nor had any other problem.
I even grease them every year or two.

Also the 4000 has flat paddle grips and the 2000 has round ones....

I bought 4 old 2000gt's this winter and replaced all the guts for $50 ... they might be old but for the cost they will do just fine.

If this was me, I'd be watching the classified ads for a deal. That's how I picked up both my Amundson moochers. Got 1 for $225 and 1 for $200. Well worth waiting for a deal imo.

yes...there are used reels around on the ads......but....if you want to tune them up or replace washers...what then?

M-One for sure versus 4000GT like someone said 4000 drag leaves much to desire. Never had a problem with the M-One. Thought I would try the 4000 glad I only had one bought for me as a gift so cant even take it back.

I'm not sure about other brands but probably, they have a whole tackle box full of Shimano parts,springs,handles etc

had my first and last experience with mikes reel repair.i would never recommend them and tackle shops like berrys who have been around forever should really know where theyre sending somebody. ended up spending an hour fixing the issues when I got home but no worries $60 lesson learned

Saw an Amundson TMX4 at Army and Navy New west last week - on Special for $199 looked like last one. Very good deal they raised the price on them since I bought mine and that is the best price I have seen since. Probably best bang for your buck new or used...

I realize these are reels designed for float fishing rivers, but could they be adapted?

i have a couple of their levelwind reels (okuma) on my boat I let guys use if they need a rod cause they're inexpensive and have been bulletproof for me. if one goes into the drink i don't feel too bad,

Float reels aren't built to take the stress that a reel takes on the downrigger they'll last for a while before the sides start binding then buckling.

Shimano 4000GT is a great reel.
There is a reason many lodges use them.
I have 6 and some are over 15 years old.
I have replaced a few drag washers and had 1 split spool.
I have had 1 Diawa during that time and it lasted 1 season.
Mine are retired now only because i got Islanders for Christmas from my boys 2 years ago.

Is Mike's Reel Repairs still king of the hill for parts?

I find Mike's to be EXTREMELY expensive for buying parts for my Shimano Tekota reels. I've also found sometimes they take a long time to ship parts. Personally I use www.tunasreeltroubles.com, but I don't know if they carry Daiwa parts. I've also seen quite a few drag washers on Ebay (just be careful).
