Where's the Coho?

Where's all the coho this year along the beaches between the Little River ferry and Point Holmes? There is a head recovery point at the end of SS Road and so far this year there hasn't been a single head deposited. Usually by now I have caught at least 12 coho from the shore by either fly fishing or buzz bomb. I have seen no fish jumping and seen no fish caught. Looks like this is going to be the worst year ever for coho from the beach. Let's hope they are still coming, better late than never!

well they just started rolling into the stamp. Springs are still going crazy out of ukee and some but not many have started up the stamp as well. I assumption is that they are late.

2 weeks late perhaps.
Have not seen anything on the beaches yet.

I wonder how many coho were scooped up in the sockeye seine nets?
Are those numbers available. I'm sure entire runs are wiped out in a single set.:(

Actually, not many coho were around up here when the sockeye were running through.

Yes they are here, but not in any #'s that would make you notice them. We only caught 3 coho all season up here in McNeill. There were days when a few were being caught, but not like the numbers from last year.

It would be interesting to see the by-catch # for all species.

Cheers

yes!!!, exactly, not only coho, but what about Steelhead, with seine nets near/gill nets in the rivers...

I do know Coho were getting caught up in the food fish gill nets up Johnstone Strait, I know this as fact from native friend who did it.
I can't comment on the seines....

They're trying to address coho/steelhead, and have been for years. That said, those among the sportfleet that net wild coho before release know how easily their scales come off. As Unknown says, there is no sense pointing fingers at one user group over the other; we are all to blame.

quote:1. The target species in this fishery is Fraser River sockeye, the incidental catch of chum and pink may be retained in the areas open to fishing. There
will be non-retention of coho, chinook and steelhead. This fishery has been designed to address stocks of concern constraints.
3. Seine vessel masters are reminded that logbooks, operating revival tanks and
brailing are mandatory as condition of their licence and are legal
requirements.

Coho started showing up off of Sooke a week ago. They are way behind last years arrival and not in the numbers of last year (so far)

Fri - we hooked up 1 hatchery 8 lb Coho and 2 small wild ones while fishing for springs.

Sat - we hooked up to 6 Coho, 3 of 6 were wild and two of the hatchery fish were 10lb +- and one of the wild was est. at 14+ lb (great fight) I targeted Coho's for 3 hours.

Sun - we hooked up 5 times. 4 of the 5 were wild and the one hatchery was 10+ lb. I specifically targeted Coho's for 4 hours.

Monday was a different story, hooked up 8 winter springs (6 - 10 lb), two Socs and one wild Coho. Where the winter springs came from????? But I think the rain had something to do with the lack of Coho's. There was lot and lots of bait in the water, more than I've seen all year so it must have been a smorgasbord for the fish.

All the wild Coho's were released….

I think I will start changing over to Coho gear full time and picking up my speed. Hopefully it's as good as it was last year.

If they're late, they're VERY late!! As a member of Little River enhancement we will be thinking about collecting our broodstock in the next four weeks or so, that should be interesting. Maybe they should have renamed the Georgia Strait the Dead Sea! I am really disappointed this year with the lack of fish from the local beaches. Anyone have any ideas why the Coho are not here?

Coho are just insane on the Big Bank the last few days. High ratio of wild. About 90% on my boat. But they are huge on average, seeing 20 pounders daily.
Not sure the seines and gillnets take all that many anymore. They are restricted to times and places where they can fish. West coast troll fleet opens in a few days also. Last year we could have loaded the boat with belly up Coho. Hope that dosen't happen again.

so where is the big bank?? is that offshore or near the wall?

I was out at the Wreck (17 miles SW of Ucluelet) on the weekend and the Coho were everywhere and huge. Double headers all day with average weights in the 15-20 pound range. A LOT of fun. Very few hatchery fish.

This post is about coho from the beaches between the Little River ferry and Point holmes. I realise other areas there are plenty of coho, but where are the ones that are usually found here?

I guess they are not there now. This isn't the 1st year they have been late or not shown up. Mother Nature keep things interesting.

Well, I can tell you for sure, it has been the worst year for the nine years I have lived here. I have seen a steady decline every year for nine years. Something is wrong, very wrong. I'm really saddened by it. Not everyone has a boat and I love to fish coho from the beach on the fly. There are just no fish this year. Not just me, nobody is catching or seeing any fish at all. September is usually the highlight of my year. Volunteers at the Little River enhancement work hard every year releasing clipped coho hoping for a good return.

How quickly you forgot about the run the Puntledge got last year.

They just did not go by your beach.:D

Agree with OBD. You have also forgotten about all the coho that have inhabited the Kitty Coleman hump this summer.

Lets see what hits the rivers before the "doom" forecast.
