Where are they?

Personally, I'm having my best season since I bought my boat 3 years ago. I have changed a bunch of things up, mind you. We seem to get into a 17 to 20 lb spring most days at some point. I don't want to come across as boasting, but it's sure been a great month for us.

Lots of fish in both areas along the surf line. They seem to be concentrated in big numbers in certain areas and not in many of the traditional spots.

Funny my old man and I fish together almost all the time. Today he was telling me how he was shocked this year was not as good as he expected saying he had better years in the past few. For me, this has been my best year ever already. I have never landed more then one tyee in a single season. I have already landed 2 and lost one at the boat. Things have slowed the past couple weeks here from what early june was. But from my log books last 3 weeks of Aug are when the bog boys come in quantity!

In the areas I fish, mostly off Tofino, I'm seeing a lot more smaller Chinook this year. More landed, but smaller on average. 3 weeks so far, every week a little bigger, getting into the 20s this past weekend. Hopefully the numbers stay and the size increases.

For Coho, more clipped fish this year, haven't had to weed through as many Coho to find the Hatches on most days. Troll along at 20' and you can hook up all day long.

I've also found Halibut fishing better than ever, although I only ever troll for Halibut. More consistent hookups and my largest a 40# on the troll this year.

Fishing has been hit and miss for the better sized ones. Like others have stated.....right place at the right time.

It's more hit right now as it's very good for 20 lbers right now

Don't worry, they are on their way:). Averaging mid 20's to a few in the 30lb range this week. Not many hatchery fish though, heard through the head recovery guy that it is the same down in Kyuquot. Best thing of all, we are fishing only 25-40 feet down, all surface fish. A guest brought his 8 weight fly rod out and managed to pick up a 24lb spring while on the anchor, he has been bringing the rod out for the last 5 years, finally hit it on this trip.

Its been good for me and the guys I regularly fish with or keep in touch with. I have enough springs for the year. But I agree with Owen-- its gone quiet for the last few days. BUT WAIT!!!!! There are gazillions of soxs heading our way... DFO said so, so it must be true!!! LOL

Putting my humble two cents worth in somewhat hesitantly here............:o

In Sooke I have had 6 sessions in June and two in July. In that time I have had four teeners and one 21lb fish, plus a few smaller ones (plus lost two very decent fish at the net). The fishing certainly has been hit and miss, with one one of two hits per 4 or 5 hour session. However, all of my fish have been at 85 feet or deeper in at least 90 feet of water. A couple have been around 120'. The few fish that are there seem to be running deeper........

Of course that is just me and I am sure the experts on here are still getting fish at 50-60 feet or whatever.....I just can't manage that feat!!:o

From the newspaper article I think Duffer has been getting all from the hump. Good job Duffer, leave me a couple.

After receiving some rotten, BS and uncalled for text messages this even about a post I made and assuming they are related to to my first reply to you. I dug thru my recycling bin. No where does the article even say he's slaying them at Kitty. As it's known that Kitty has been pretty dam slow this year am I just guessing its how you read the article and what they quoted Duffer on.

Campbell River and Powell River are the two closest locations I know of to catch fish this spring and early summer and even those locations have petered off.... Unless it's a coho your after.

Hey FA......have you tried any squid-pattern type lures....?

Like the 4 inch OA12LR hoochy or B-2 type squid lures or a straight white glow hoochy?.......maybe white/glow Cuttlefish?

When there's no bait around they sometimes like squid......

( yeh....I know....the fish have to be there in the first place......:p)

They make a hoochy that is an OA12LR but it has a thin green stripe down each side......got a tip yesterday that this one was working when all else failed.......

Campbell River has been fishing good but has slowed down the last week or so for me and buddies too. I still see lots of fish caught but I'm blaming the super moon.

As far as Nootka Chinooks goes Beano Creek & Bajo Reef are the hotspots out side. Inside Nootka Camel Rk., Salter Pt. & Coopte Pt. are all GOOD!!! Not many Coho showing yet.
Esperanza Inlet is full of springs from the entrance at the Tahsis Narrows all the way to & in Saltery Bay near Steamer Pt.
Ferrer Pt. & the Glory Hole at Catala Is. are producing most of the 30+lb Chinooks. Coho are thick at Double Is. & in the rocks on the south side of Catala Is.
Fog & a bit of a lump are keeping most boat in & near shore on both sides of Nootka Island.
1 over/1 under regs. came into effect today - July 15th. for both Nootka & Esperanza -check them out
