What Did You Do To Your Boat This Week?

Curious about the injector failure. What were the symptoms and did you have any theory on the cause? Just a reminder that G1 Etecs have the regular spin on fuel filter, but also have a really fine in-line filter that gets changed as part of the 300hr service:

I'm fairly good about throwing in a splash of the Evinrude 2+4 fuel conditioner with each fill, but is there any recommend preventative maintenance?
I'm a bit puzzled. I got the motor cheap in 2020 because it was on a pallet, had been on the market for a while. It ran rough when I first hung it on my transom, leading me to eventually diagnosing a blocked injector. I had the set cleaned by a service in West Kelowna and everything ran fine after that. Have put on just 180 hours in the four and a bit seasons since then, very happy with this match for my hull.

Now it's a different injector that's not delivering fuel. Regardless of actual hours, I've done a 300 hour service every other fall, so it's had new fuel filters, including the VST filter in your link. That little conical filter is in the return side of the high pressure circuit, so it only sees the fuel not needed by the injectors for the given rpm and load. I'll definitely have a good look at its condition, if I see any debris there then I have to suspect high pressure fuel circuit hoses are breaking down due to age. I installed all new fuel lines throughout the hull to the lift pump in 2020, but the hoses in the cowling are original. I'll also have some questions for the injector service about what material they find in this set.

Shop down in the US - but has a note in the FAQ to check ohms on the injectors as an indicator. below 2ohms and the injector is failing and needs replacing. Above 3 ohms and the injector is likely clogged. Also notes to clean all injectors at one time.

Hard to believe that modern fuel hose would break down that quick - its generally stuff from the 1990s and earlier that weren't designed fro any ethanol. Anything after early 2000s should be able to handle ethanol all day long.

Going to change the glow plugs on my 3 cylinder diesel next week. Reading lots of stories online of them snapping off during removal. Don’t want to go there so any tips from you mechanics? Engine hot or cold? Any special penetrant to spray or soak around the threads ahead of time??
New plugs came in today and I had some time so decided to give it a go. Engine cold and no penetrant and they came out easy peezy. Sigh of relief as I was prepared for worse case scenario. After chatting with @noluck (thanks for your time and advice) I will be sourcing some OEM plugs but for now I’m good to go.

Cleaned out all the old caulking around rub rail and recaulked with sikaflex. The old caulking job was a mixture of what seemed like clear bathroom silicone and other sections had harder dirty stuff. Been like that since I had the boat.
Taped upper and lower, probably 100’ of masking, and then ran the bead of sikaflex. Turned out nice for an amateur.

That looks great , did you use 295uv or the 291?

Paid a bunch of bucks to replace failed #3 injector and clean/flow test the other three, plus 300 hr service parts kit, and assorted other Evinrude parts. That old thing about nothing to spend on repairs for a couple of years, then it comes back around on year 3. Plus now I have to do the work!

Couriering stuff up and down the island, visiting my dad for his 82nd, and Owen the Assassin gave me a set of Stainless downrigger spool! Super thanks to Owen he also had a downrigger cover after mine blew off on the highway last week!

Can’t wait to install them, number 5 or 6 on the boat project list! Anyone who is super handy mechanical/electrical in Saanich who wants to go fishing and help me on my project list!!!
