In 2012, the Department has identified concerns associated with expected poor returns of Spring 5-2 and Summer 5-2 chinook to the Fraser River. Management of these stocks is based on an in-season assessment of returns using the cumulative catch per unit effort (CPUE) of chinook at the Albion Test Fishery. A three-zone management approach is used to identify management actions. Management actions for a return of less than 30,000 chinook to the Fraser River (management zone 1) were planned pre-season based on the number of spawners in the 2007 parental generation (22,000 chinook) and the recent lower than average return rates. The model used to predict the returns of Spring 5-2 and Summer 5-2 chinook to the Fraser River uses data from the standard chinook net at the Albion Test fishery and does not use catch from the multi-panel net (which is currently fished on alternating days). The standard chinook net is an 8 inch (approx. 20 cm) mesh. The 2012 Albion chinook test fishery began operating on April 25th. A total of four (4) chinook have been caught in the standard chinook net; an additional seven (7) chinook have been caught in the multi-panel net. The CPUE input into the model falls below the lower range of historical CPUE's used to parameterize the model (1995 to 2010, excluding 2007). Based on this CPUE, for the period May 6 to June 2, the current predicted return to the mouth of the Fraser of Spring 5-2 and Summer 5-2 chinook in the aggregate ranges from 30,000 to 65,000 chinook (median of 43,930). At this time, there continues to be considerable uncertainty about the estimated return to the Fraser. A need for a cautious approach to management of Fraser chinook continues to apply. The next update has been scheduled for June 11th. Appropriate management actions will be confirmed pending the next update if possible. The final in-season update is scheduled for June 18th. Previously announced fishery management actions to conserve Fraser River chinook remain in effect until further notice. I want to know where the nets are and why alternating days??? how do you do a test that way AND are they above the FN nets cause if there not what good is it doing a test above the gautlet your not going to get a great reading this is very very sad...

To err on the side of caution would be a good thing if it could make up for years of incredibly poor (mis-)management. DFO, once again, will roll-over for the big players. We need action at the political level to voice and lobby for our interests. That is not happening so, as you say Wolf, others get the mine and we, once again, will get the shaft.

We already knew this was coming...

Dear fellow anglers,

It is with great disappointment I report that our Juan de Fuca public fisheries are taking another hit again this year. As DFO have indicated the return of Spring and Summer 5-2 Chinook will most likely be in Zone 1 and plan to manage fisheries accordingly. They will increase the restrictions on the Chinook fishing in our area this summer if returns remain in Zone 1. I have attached several documents to this email for you to read about this issue.

Please expect the forthcoming DFO announcement for recreational fisheries, which will most likely read: (changes from 2011 in red)

As your representative, it is very important to me you understand that everything possible was done following the huge March 21 Victoria SFAB committee meeting to avoid further restrictions on our Chinook fishery this summer. The SFAB at all levels supported our local committee position and gave clear advice to DFO senior management not to increase restrictions as we had already met the reduction targets two years in a row. Additionally, I would like to thank several dedicated individuals that lobbied behind the scenes and in the media for our cause. Sadly, it is clear that DFO has chosen to ignore the best advice of the Main Board of the SFAB and our pleas as local anglers.

Please have a safe and enjoyable summer,

I think Wolf's main point is by putting the test nets above the FN nets it is another example of incompetent, misguided, and just plain stupid action on the part of DFO.

Ahh, maybe a set of test nets before and after and compare....nahhh that data would be too accurate. No room to put on some kind of ocean survival spin.

I think he was just asking 'are they' not they are.

I remember at one of the meetings they were talking about the Albion test fishery. Even the dfo guy seemed to understand location of the test fishery wasnt the greatest and would look at other options. It sounded like they wouldnt fund a second station but would take in information from it if we were to arrange it. This was more to do with us getting late openings then general returns. I would like also to know how and where they test.

The Albion test fishery occurs at Ft. Langley on the Fraser. That said I cannot confirm nor deny that there may be FN nets down stream either from shore or Boat gill-nets. The Fraser is mighty high right now and flowing hard with lots of stumps, trees etc, we usually don't see the set nets down stream from Ft. Langley till later in the year when water has dropped.

What ever though, WOLF your bang on ! Screwed again and the FN fish with a vengeance nets every where through-out upstream Chilliwack up-river throughout the rivers travel ........ if they were true keepers of the land they would change their practice too. Pathetic really, no politician has the nads to stand up to any of them .........

HT

Lets hope the water levels remain high in the Fraser with debris so the nets will not go in, but it will be a tough one for the test fishery

We in area's 18/19/20 just suck it up like we have done in previous years.
Nothing will change until DFO is dismantled and we have a fact and science based
governing agency.

I dont have the answer currently. But "sucking it up" would not be a part of it.

The worst part is years ago we took a hit to "protect" these fish and even at the 5 % we "apperantly" take compared to the FNs 38 % they have had NO restrictions put on them because the GOVERNMENT has no balls and stand up to them. Ill be the first to stand up for ANYONES right to fish/hunt if and this is a big if its for there families to have food for the coming months but to sell by the road sorry NO.
The way this gov. is (HARPO) he is dismantling the many years of work with everything including fisheries, the pipeline, cuts to Coast guard. he doesnt care about the environment or the people thats for damn sure all we can do is vote the SOB out when it comes time but it may be too late....

IF they are truely trying to "save" these fish ALL users have to take a hit not just our area and not every 2nd day it has to be done 24/7 for a month to get "TRUE DATA" What a fricken joke

Our day of reckoning is coming; there will be fish!

Wolf, that link won't open for me...bad file/error. Maybe a hoax. Lets hope.

It’s a map of the area effected by the change. It is an Adobe readable file and my security software blocked it when I clicked on the link as it saw it as software on my computing trying to access the web. I have the option of overriding for a known safe site and did so and the DFO chart displayed.
