WD40...any comment?

Petroleum Oil products can kill birds and work their way into the food chain very quickly until you start eating it yourself in the salmon you are catching. Great stuff if you like man boobies. Use smelly jelly or fish oil products same results , better for everyone.

And you still want to fish it and spray your lures down cmon people it really doesnt matter . from looking at the msds sheet there isnt even fish oil in it anymore use something that is bio degradable at least and contains some fish oils. one has to ask yourself is a fish really worth harming where you live????
If you know the facts and still want to harm the water then your just plain dumb whats the sense in raising moneies for hatcheries and societies if you knowing want to kill of the work thats being done????? look at the bigger picture.......

personal supersticious behavior among fishermen is a topic that could fill an encyclopedia. me? no bananas and endless cowboy coffee cake!

Okay… Here’s my story… and I’m sticking to it:

I am known to my friends as a “Master Fisherman”… what that is I’m not sure, but it is flattering!

A friend & I have fished together for many years. First on his boat and both of us caught about the same amount of fish! Then I bought a boat, rigged it with all the latest downriggers, top of the line! I was concerned about corrosion and rust… so I sprayed everything down with WD 40. And, we caught a lot of fish!

The first year with another boat… we caught ALL the fish. Another one of my friends actually came aboard my boat and measured my leaders, looked at my poles, my line, hooks, and watched the roll on my bait, etc. Decided it was the fact that I was running “cannon” downriggers with “positive ion”. So, he went and bought a “black box”. Next year… he thought it was the “pole & line”… so, he bought new poles… and line to make sure he had the same that I had! The following year… HE BOUGHT MY BOAT! Thinking it was the boat! Then he thought it was the scent of him touching the bait. So, he got surgical gloves.

Then I realized… that I sprayed everything down with WD40! Especially my downrigger cables, reels, hooks, etc! I even sprayed my downrigger balls! After all… it helps with rust and corrosion!

That’s when it hit me, it was the WD40… and he started using WD40 on his “Scotty” cables, hooks and bait. Now he can honestly say… he is close to keeping up with me! Yes... I did say close! I still catch more fish, but since he started spraying every thing down with WD40... his catch has improved!

I would bet there is more oil puked into the ocean from old 2 stroke engines than there could ever be from a few squirts of WD40 :D

Exactly. Have you ever looked in the water in the marina as you're pulling out?
Now imagine what's actually out in the sea itself, and then consider how little impact a squirt of wd40 really is.

I'm supposed to rub my lures with coffee cake?

works best when eaten along with a shot of real coffee! WD40 is a water displacer. unfortunatley, that shot you give your lure, rigger line or whatever is gone in a heart beat. of course there is something to be said for killing odors but anase works just swell.

Well **** then lets dump all the old oil ya have in the ocean!!!!!why not If I can personally stop what I do and "try" to not dump something harmful in the ocean and try and save the ocean on my part then ill sleep better knowing I did my best but if you think a little isnt going to hurt. times that by 300 or 500 people, i quess the doubters are the ones that think the goldstream spill was "just a squirt" ANY thing we can do to stop is a good thing why is that so hard to comprehand????WEIRD???

If you're really worried, i guess you shouldn't run any gas/diesel boat
in the ocean

Small Boat Engine Wet Exhaust
Discharge Summary
Description of Discharge
How is this discharge generated? This discharge is the seawater that is mixed and discharged with small boat
propulsion engine exhaust gases to cool the exhaust and quiet the engine. Small boats are powered by either inboard
or outboard engines. Seawater is injected into the exhaust of these engines for cooling and to quiet engine operation.
Constituents from the engine exhaust are transferred to the injected seawater and discharged overboard as wet
exhaust.
Which vessels generate this discharge? Most small boats with engines generate this discharge. The majority of
inboard engines used on small boats are two-stroke engines that use diesel fuel. The majority of outboard engines
are two-stroke engines that use a gasoline-oil mixture for fuel.
How often and where is this discharge generated? This discharge is generated when operating small boats. Due to
their limited range and mission, small boats spend the majority of their operating time within 12 n.m. from shore.
Analysis
Nature of Discharge: Wet exhaust from outboard engines contains several constituents that can exceed acute
Federal criteria or State acute water quality criteria including benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and naphthalene.
Wet exhaust from inboard engines can contain benzene, ethylbenzene, and total polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons
(PAHs) that can exceed State water quality criteria. Mass loadings of these wet exhaust constituents are considered
large.

Sure works for hali, at least the old formula. Maybe the present batches should be called WD41 or 43 or whatever iteration it is now.

If there is a product that's environmental friendly and works the same it seems like a no brainer. I'm with Last Chance it may not be a hugh impact on the environment but you got to start somewhere and it all helps. I realize that out motors and boats have a impact on the ocean but if there are things in our control that will help it seems like there worth doing!!!

This may sound like a weird concept but oil is a natural substance.
Our dear mother earth produces it in her bowels.
While refining adds impurities(i'm sure) the earth should be able to deal with a substance
that it produces , given that the volume is not excessive.
Yes/ No ?

The earth may have made the stuff but we as humans are moving to places it does not belong. The earth makes many dangerous materials and I'm sure that it has no problem dealing with them. Its the millions of living things on the planet that have the hard time living in things like OIL!!!

Millions of people are soaked in wd40 everyday. Workin in shops and industrial equipment. I wouldn't go drinking it 'sept for the wisers deluxe' but to say its going to destroy everything in its path is retarded.

Yes JAC you get it And see some are justifing still using it???simply amazing that you would knowing destroy what you love to do"go fishing"think about the future. Scott as a "natura substancel" one word exxon valdez

WD-40 has never contained fish oil.
What a Fish story!
Myth: WD-40 contains fish oil.
Fact: Consumers have told us over the years that they have caught some of the biggest fish ever after protecting their fish hooks and lures with WD-40. We believe this legend came from folks assuming that the product must contain fish oil since it appears to attract fish. Sorry Charlie[SUB]®[/SUB], it just ain’t so.

WD-40 Company has taken steps to respect and conserve the environment, and encourages its users to do the same. While WD-40 can be used to help protect fishing equipment from rust and corrosion, WD-40 Company does not recommend using WD-40 to attract fish.

For anyone worrying about the environment? Think about all those toilets in Victoria! You are actually harming the environment more by dumping that pollution into the ocean (every time your flush your toilet) than anyone ever could spaying their gear (or lures) with WD40. Maybe the answer would be - stop flushing your toilet?

While all ingredients aren’t listed the current MSDS shows it does have 50% mineral spirits and 35% "petroleum base" oil. The mineral spirits are probably worse than the petroleum based. There is a difference between crude oil (Valdez spill) and the use of a petroleum based oil product, which is probably closer to some type of a Vaseline base.

I use WD40 on my gear for what it is designed for; however, it certainly does seem to work to mask bad scents. I actually do use scent (usually garlic oil) to mask those bad scents.

should have mentioned, WD is an excellent choice for polisihng all of your stainless steel appliances. clean with 409, come back over with WD and a micro rag, perfect every time.

I have never used it but from what I have heard, it works. I also think that there are other options for scent that will be just as effective. I do think that large amounts in our oceans would be bad, but that's not gonna happen from a few sprays on gear. WAY more damage to our oceans health by using plastic and lead!! Lead is bad news for the Eco system down there but we use and leave behind tonnes of it. Literally tonnes. Plastic is also bad bad news for the oceans and we all know that many of our lures, teaser heads, etc etc end up floating around our ocean for years. I have friends that sailed the world teaching about state of our oceans and the plastic that lives in it. Check out oceangybe.com if you want to see where they went and what they found.

Anyways, use your common sense and protect what we have. I am not suggesting we all fish from dugout canoes using rocks to get your bait down, but just that we should be conscious of what we leave behind. Do you really want to be that guy that future generations are saying "what the f@ck were they thinking?".
