Victoria reports - spring/summer 09

I couldn't make it out today, but the pinks have arrived in big numbers off the waterfront. Lots of limits were weighed in on the fishing log at our club boathouse, so no need to go much further than Brotchie or the Flagpole or Clover Point if you want your limit of pinks. Fisihng for springs was slower and lots of dogfish were around.

Sounds good to me. I am still a little new to Vic salt though. Are the fish in close, or do you still need to head out a ways to get them? Thanks, and sorry for the potentially dumb question.

Got an 18 lb whitey off McCauley around 5 tonight. 120' on purple haze hootchey. Other wise a slow afternoon. No pinks but some guys had a few.

Fished Pender bluffs...7 pink but no springs and many more shakers..had a screamer that ran 300 feet and was on for about 5 minutes but never got close enough to see it. But overall a fun day fishing.

Yesterday was pretty slow by the Breakwater. I only saw two springs caught by the fleet. I did pick up two pinks, 6 lbs and 4 1/2 lbs, but that was not what I was after and I did not see many of them caught in close either.

This weekend there will be two salmon derbys going along the waterfront. The one that I am invovled with is The Clover Point Anglers' Association 15th Annual Salmon Derby. There will be around 20 boats in the derby, all 12 feet in length, the little tinnies that you often see out there. Please be aware of the wake that your boat leaves if you are travelling in this area near the small boats. Some of our members are in their late 70's and 80's and the rocking from big wakes can be quite uncomfortable and even dangerous. Courtesy and safe boating is always in style. Good luck if you are out this weekend.

Hey porcupine do you want me to put the word out to the whalewatchers to give you a little extra room?

That would be great beemer.

On a sad note, there is an obituary for Brent Huggins (Wahoo Boy) in today's Times Colonist (copied below). Only 56 years old with youg children and very well liked in victoria. Very sad.

HUGGINS, Brent William April 23, 1956 August 15, 2009 Brent passed away quietly in his sleep at his home in Saanich. Predeceased by his father, David Huggins. He leaves his dear friend, companion and love, Joelene Heathcote; their sons, Ieuan (3) and Madoc (1 month); his mother, Meryl and brother, Craig. He will be remembered fondly by numerous other relatives and friends in Canada and the U.K. Brent lived his whole life in Victoria. He attended Oak Bay High School and the University of Victoria. For the past 22 years, he had worked for Airgas Canada Inc. as a gas applications representative. He was an avid sportsman and was particularly keen on the game of rugby which he played and coached for many years with the Castaway Wanderers Rugby Club. Fishing was another passion and he loved spending time at the helm of the Wahoo Boy". Although Brent had children late in life, his greatest happiness was his family, who gave him love and a sense of purpose. There will be a private family memorial service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Heart & Stroke Foundation of B.C., #107 1001 Cloverdale Ave., Victoria, BC V8X 4C9 or a charity of your choice. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.mccallbros.com .

Very sorry to hear, i didn't know him personally but have seen the
"Wahoo boy" fishing off the waterfront for years.
my sympathy goes to his young family.

Our CPAA derby got off to a good start today. These are the two that I caught. 30 lbs 13 oz and 19 lbs 3 oz. Lance foreman did well too landing 28 lb 10 oz and 23 lb 6 oz springs near the breakwater. It's going to be a zoo there tomorrow with Esquimalt Anglers hoding their derby.

Nice work Porupine! We watched you land your 30. Great net job by your self! Well done! The boats around you could of given you more room when you were playing it out, it had a lot of line out looked like it ran right towards shore. I heard on the radio the two boats that have no consideration of other that cut off other peoples fish.. funny thing was we had a right rod to shore confrontation with that same boat first thing in the morning.. apparently that rule is out the window on that tight tac. LOL..
We managed to land 3 springs to 22lbs. All in all a Fun morning.

Yeah, there was lots of action compared to last week. The one boat that ran over my line when I was playing the fish at least stopped and cleared the line with the fish still on. I heard that he also tangled with some other boats this morning. Nice job on getting three springs. On of our anglers in a boat like mine had to release a 12-14 lb wild coho that he hooked close to the wall.

The Clover Point Anglers' Derby ended today without too much happening this morning. I was fortunate to take first place with a 30 lb 13 oz spring caught by the breakwater. Lance Foreman was second with a 28 lb 10 oz spring, also caught by the breakwater. Lance also caught a 23 lb 6 oz spring there as well. Third place went to Gerry Vervoort for a 19 lb 6 oz spring. Gerry was hoping to make it 3 years in a row as derby winner, but that's how the cookie crumbles! Everyone had a good time, although it was pretty rough for our 12 foot boats early this morning, what with the ebb tide and the westerly winds. Thank you to all of you who gave our little boats a little distance and not too much wake. All in all, we did pretty well, considering we would have taken 2nd and 3rd in the Esquimalt Anglers derby. Anyway, there is a good run of big white springs around, but don't expect them to stay too long.

SOOOOO many boats at the breakwater this morning! I fished 2 hours and didn't see one salmon caught. I was just out for lings, and I got a smallish keeper. I watched a nice big one chew my bait between the hooks at about 20', but she just lost interest and swam off. Kind of annoying.

i seem to remember the high tide is better than the low of the waterfront... not sure if that is actually true or not.

i'll be testing that theory this evening...

Sooo many feeder springs out there now...
2 hours tonight hooked and released at least a dozen up to
about 5lbs.
there are a few nice ones, had one hit so hard it drove the squirt right up to the flasher, another one poppped off, got a couple of good head shakes , and gone.
Needlefish squirts , right on the bottom.
