Upcoming Victoria Federal by-election

They don't like sailor's Pip.... :D

Haha.......I figured that may have been one of the reasons.....but there are also "Yachters" there too!

Had to ask....I raced sailing for years out of Royal Van but also boat with a number of friends out of there.

Well....just speculating, but it smells like money and my experience is that some of those folks like to let you or help you spend your money way before they'll toss in some of their own.......

The conservative party is a non-starter for me anyway.

As far as having someone on the government side of the house, we had that. Liberal MP David Anderson from 1993-2006. He was DFO minister for a couple of years and was moved to Environment after that.

So having an MP with the sitting government and even a cabinet minister at that is no guarantee of good representation. See the refrence above on John Duncan MP.

And Pippen, I have nothing personal against sailors! Even rich ones!

Ya a "real stand up guy".... So Dale Gann wouldn't even respond to the request to attend the all candidates debate on CFAX this morning. Every other party had their MP candidate on air ready to answer questions. CFAX requested his attendance several times and apparently his people didn't even return the calls. What's to hide? A little sheepish that Chairman Harper is selling the soul of the province and country? I agree it is a tough position to defend, but the silence is deafening! Between this so call "trade agreement" being signed behind closed doors and their stripping of environmental review through these omnibus bills and basically sidestepping our parliamentary system because there is not enough time to debate the contents thereof, why would anyone would vote for these clowns is so far beyond me it is unbelievable.

So, I ask you this Ten Mile, going back to my original point why is your buddy so hush hush? The questions this morning that were raised a little too tough to defend?

Well BT -- been a member of the RVYC for 5 years. It's a not-for-profit club owned by the members and quite frankly, one of the most inexpensive places you can keep your boat in the entire region. Lots of fishermen -- myself included. They promote boating and the love of the water (including sailing). The members give back big time in terms of fund raising, community events and care of our waterways. It's a marina -- there is a varied mix of boats from the very expensive to the not-so-expensive and that distribution is no different than anyplace I've ever seen.

If you want to come see it some time -- send me a PM -- happy to tour you around -- sounds like a drink at the bar is in order ;-)

Really?!

TenMile, if your friend really does care about the enviro(as EVERYONE SHOULD), then there is no way that he should be running for the conservatives in this politacal climate. Without calling names....it sounds like he is a bit of an oxymoron because like oil and water...environmental protection doesn't seem to mix with the Conservatives these days. Sure, one might argue that there does need to be good people making change in that party but I feel they need to go down in flames for the **** they are pulling. I don't think it all needs to be said again, Englishmen summed it up nicely.

No wonder he didn't show for the for the radio debate; how could someone who has even a tiny bit of respect and care the the enviro even try to defend the Conservatives deplorable actions as late. And for that matter, was he at the rally in Victoria on Monday? That would be telling of his dedication.

I hope that your friend gives his head a shake and that your fishing Karma hasn't been lowered by suggesting that we should vote conservative!! LOL ;)

Harper can suck it.

Too bad fishing has to be involved in polital chatter, but it does if we want to be fishing in a sustainable way for EVER.

I start every day of my life - reading this Forum.

It helps me stay motivated and inspires me to do the things I do, while staying in touch with issues impacting our fishery.

Likewise, Harper starts each day by reading - 'Big Oil' and 'Bow to Asia' magazines.

FYI, Dale's Conservative Party by-election office is located at 540 Yates Street downtown. I was walking to my truck after work and discovered this and couldn't help myself from walking in and asking some questions and having a little debate. Overall, I would say that he isn't a bad guy and is certainly running for the wrong party. I am going to go back and chat some more with him because I didn't have enough time to ask all that I wanted to.

Well, we got our first knock on the door from a candidate today. Green Party candidate Donald Galloway. He had Elizabeth May in tow (or maybe the other way around ;) We had a good chat, nothing overly preachy. I felt my concerns raised over the present governments way of doing business were well received. Checked out Donald's website in the aftermath. Might be thinking of voting for Green for the first time in my life....The Missus is already there!

Sorry about cross posting but I thought this needed to be posted here.
We need to send a message East, Loud and Clear.

Taken from a speech by Edward Goldenberg partner, Bennett Jones, LLP
The Tank Storage Canada Conference
Calgary, October 16, 2012

There is tremendous opposition not only in British Columbia but across Canada to the pipeline and to the tanker route from Kitimat to the open sea.
The current BC provincial government is frankly sitting on the fence, arguing on the one hand that the BC coast line and environment are priceless, and on the other hand, trying to negotiate a price; the government is not sure which side to take, but is definitely reluctant to take the side of the pipeline.
A provincial election will be held in May of 2013 and unless there is a dramatic change between now and then in public opinion, there will likely be a new NDP government. That government would almost certainly oppose the pipeline.
I believe that the federal government could legally overcome resistance from a provincial government and approve the pipeline if it is successful in the regulatory process. But don't count on constitutional law rescuing the pipeline. Despite what Ministers may say today, the federal government is unlikely to risk the political consequences when push comes to shove. Let's remember what happened two years ago when the Harper government was pressed to reject BHP Billiton's bid to take over Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan in the face of opposition that had spread like a prairie grass fire. Suddenly potash was deemed to be a "strategic Canadian asset."
Actually there were 14 strategic assets in Saskatchewan; potash wasn't one of them. The 14 strategic assets were 14 Saskatchewan seats in Parliament of which the Conservative Party held 13, and a federal election was approaching. In British Columbia at the time of the next federal election, there will be 42 strategic assets in the mix without which Mr. Harper could lose his government.
If in the run up to the next election, the pipeline to the West Coast is hugely unpopular, does anyone here want to guess which assets will be most strategic for the Prime Minister -- the seats or the pipeline? Before we denigrate the political process, let me remind you of the words of Sir Winston Churchill who said that democracy is the worst system of government in the world…except for all the others!

Looks like the people have spoken. It was interesting to see the greens go against a sewage treatment facility along with their idol David (I support the Campbell Carbon Tax) Suzuki just to get votes. I guess in their world Dissolved Organic Compounds are edible fish food no matter where it comes from. Ever wonder how those Jumbo Prawns in the fancy restaraunts that come from thailand got so big. I never ate another one after i found out.

Along with the sad fact that Vancouver Island is home to the worst quality of air in westerm (if not all of) Canada makes a lot of people question the Greens real agenda???

Where do you get that VI has the worst quality of air? and what would be causing it? and if Ive lived in Windsor Ontario and Hamilton Ontario, and while I am not an air quality technician, I can assure youVI does not have bad quality of air. lol

Lorne

Well Lorne- I am not an expert in air polution as I grew up in the sunny Rocky Mountains, and as published by BC's own experts- THE AIR QUALITY HERE SUCKS!
http://www.cowichannewsleader.com/news/144943875.html?mobile=true

Hasselback said that while the short term affects of smoke exposure are the most studied, he has concerns about long-term affects as well. "Chronic exposure probably-may be more disconcerting than the annual high level exposure," he said.

Either way, Cowichan currently exceeds provincial air quality objectives for both daily maximums and annual averages.

"It's starting to show there are some issues and it's time to start thinking about what you need to do," he said. "The better the air quality the fewer the health problems and anything you can do to improve the air quality is a benefit both in the short term and the long term. Any incremental steps you can take at any point in time should be undertaken."

Well the "cowichan valley" isnt all of vancouver island, and its only during half the year.

P.s im not saying its good, but saying VI has the worst air quality in canada is a bit of stretch based on that article. lol

Lorne- wasn't trying to cause a rift here- it was a quick google of Canada's air quality- I am sure there are other studies. Seems odd that the Federal government can pass laws for boaters not to dump holding tanks in the strait of Georgia, but the city of Victoria with the blessing of the provincial government think nothing of dumping their sewage into the ocean---just sayin.

I grew up in Port Alberni in the 1960's and 70's. Now THERE was some air quality!! You could taste the air then. ;)

Tenmile...

Can you ask your bud to pick up his signs on the TCH between Mckenzie and Tillicum.... Thanks

:D
