Upcoming Victoria Federal by-election

Hey all,

Political pitch for a friend of mine, Dale Gann who has decided to run in the upcoming Federal by-election as the Conservative Party candidate. I've known Dale for a number of years and have not met a person better suited to an MP role in my career -- personally, I think this takes a lot of courage to take this step, as it won't be an easy run. Dale is currently the President of the Vancouver Island Technology Park (where my office is located) and one of the founders of the Canadian LEED green building certification.

Dale is very open, and very approachable and is a long term Victoria guy. He's an active boater/sailer (4th generation member of the RVYC) has 3 kids and has a vested interest in the long term success of Victoria.

Personally, I'd love to see this type of guy represent Victoria and be in a position of influence within the government in power and finally give Victoria a voice into Federal decisions that impact our waters, fishing, tourism, pipelines, waste water treatment and more.

By-election is held on Nov 26th so make sure you get out and vote.

CONSERVATIVE ... you must be fricking joking .. i think yer in the wrong site ... this is a fishing site ... NOT a political **** show

Influence within is not what it's going to take.
We need a revolution from within for this party.
This isn't a right of center party anymore.
It is so far right I don't recognize it.
Not something I could sign up for at this point.
Glad your friend at least is will participate in the processes.
Maybe add a voice to the debate.

x2 with what GLG said. I don't quite know where to start in talking about the Conservatives but since this is a fishing/boating site and you mention your friend is a boater, let's start there. The Conservatives are currently pushing through legislation that changes "the Navigable Waters Protection Act" to something to do with Navigation. The difference is the old act protects lakes, rivers and other bodies of water in Canada and forces an environmental review to any industry proposed on these waters. The new act would get rid of that process--good in Conservative eyes as it gets rid of red tape. For the rest of us who are concerned about the waters we fish and enjoy, our sense of stewardship is offended by the intent of this act. Here is a link explaining it in greater detail.

Pretty strong message here already.
Have your friend read these responses and follow this thread as I am sure you will get more responses.
Hopefully they will all be professional and polite as the first few have been. (but I would not count on it)

Tips

So let me ask a question. All of the things you've noted above about protecting our waters, salmon etc... are very important. For the past many years, this seat in Victoria has belonged to a party that sits in the Minority in Parliament. How much visibility and representation do you think our region had when decisions were made and laws were passed?

I'd much rather have our local seat filled by something that can influence change with the governing party. The Conservatives still have a mandate for another 3+ years. Put the guy in place. Bend his ear. Make your views heard. Get a pipeline into those who make the decisions on the health of our waters.... and if you don't like how he represents your views -- vote him out at the next Federal Election.

...or.... waste your vote. Put another candidate into the seat that sits on the sidelines and has zero influence, zero power and can do nothing but ***** and moan while those that are in power push through the agendas that they believe are in the best interests of their constituents.

Tell you what.. how about we just give you guys John Duncan....That way your friend has a graceful way out. ( and we get rid of a guy that totally ignores his constituents and follows the party line like a sheep)

If your friend openly declares that he rejects the government decisions on changes to environmental legislation, if he openly declares that he is against oil tankers on our coast, if he openly declares that will fight the incompetency by DFO, if he openly declares that he sees the values of sportfishing to this coast - and is willing to address this all with his party buddies in Ottawa - HE CAN HAVE my and family's votes. Ball in his court now.

Party whip would send him back to the stone age if he did that in the open.

No doubt about that. Politics have been that way for years, and not likely to change.

Write him. The link to his website is above if you click on his name. Make your view known -- don't rely on me to speak your mind.

BTW: I share your view on the tankers/fishing/DFO etc and I will be letting him know these things are important to me. Good that he hears it from many...

Exactly. If you think there is any hope in hell that you could bend this conservatives ear and have him make change for the inside you are dead wrong. The party is whipped and the ONLY policies implemented are those that come from the cabinet. This has been proven by every motion put forward since this government first came into power.

Far better in my opinion to vote these clowns out one by one. Every by-election, every riding, every vote counts. Vote for the party that most closely represents your views and beliefs. If that happens to be conservative then by all means, vote for this guy. Otherwise don't sell yourself out. If this guy believed strongly in protecting our waterways, our renewable resources, our way of life..he wouldn't be running for office with the Conservative party of Canada.

I echo everything said here. The Conservative Party is run by an ignorant fundamentalist who has nothing but contempt for science and perceives all environmental checks and balances as getting in the way of development. Bill C-38 omnibus bill and the legislation that has followed are disgraceful, cynical and sickening ploys to grease the wheels for big oil, at any cost. He is still trying to push the Northern gateway pipeline through and the China-Canada FIPA bill is the latest missile he is sending out on this. It will enable China to effectively veto any health or environmental legislation proposed by any level of government because they can impose millions of dollars in fines to compensate for loss of "future expectation of profits". More than selling the soul of BC, the coast, to the highest bidder, this guy is selling Canada and "outsourcing" the government of Canada to China. Tenmile your friend should be utterly ashamed to stand as a conservative, and so should anyone who votes for him.........

Well said Englisman--I'm surprised people are not more outraged by that bill.
