Appears some around here are in desperate need of a Midol or two
Our fleet indeed sat idle for 8 months this past year. This is our first opening in that time, and I of course expected someone (or two or three) would break out the
anti-commie stick at the first opportunity. Thanks for verifying my faith in human nature. [V]
Cammer - just wondering what exactly your "research" consists of that supports your stated position that "
the Commy fleet has done a complete number on the springs out there"? Pretty bold and sweeping statement from one who obviously hasn't spent any time directly on the grounds as of late.
I have put that time in out there, and can offer a few tidbits for you:
- The springs are a little more spread out this spring than they have been in the past several years. But there are showings pretty well anywhere you care to look. From Brooks Bay down through the bottom of 123, they can, and are being found by those that know what they are doing.
- There are several very good concentrations of springs in our local waters off Ukee. Southbank has been producing reasonably steady, and a few areas out on the farther banks have been right rockin'. Of course these too are chiefly being caught by those that have a little more than a basic understanding of how to do that.
From what I have seen I would suggest this will be a very good season for the sports sector (of which I too am a member if you recall). In fact that has already started, as a handful of the more knowledgeable guides have been consistently bringing their clients in with grins and full coffins. Once again methinks that might just be related to the knowledge and understanding those professionals carry with them when wandering out.
To suggest the limited amount of quota we were allowed has somehow "done a complete number" on the springs is both ludicrous and ignorant. There ARE more than enough US origin fish swimming our waters to absorb the current extraction rate. Were this not the case we wouldn't realize the size of catches we've enjoyed since moving south. Really.
To base one's mindset on one or two dismal reports and a little arm chair quarterbacking suggests their just might be a little in the way of pre-disposition jaundicing the way you perceive things. But as noted, I expected that, some things simply never change.
Skunked on the Big Bank the direct result of our fleet's operations? Wow, you certainly credit us with much more capacity than I ever would have thought possible! Coast-wide from the top of the Island to the bottom, there is currently less than 50 boats operating in all areas. Some really catch them, others, as in the case of all sectors, simply don't do as well. Same holds true for Sporties, some are natural born Killers, others not quite so much so. Not at all suggesting those who reported here don't know what they are doing - anyone can have an off day, or simply miss the fish in their quest (at times a miss of a hundred yards is as good as ten miles). The amount of effort we expend out there simply doesn't have sufficient clout to render anywhere near a "complete number" on our target species. Wouldn't even if the number of rigs were to be doubled. But I guess it is good to have something to point fingers at as a way to pacify your internal misconceptions and/or less than stellar showings when fishing out there.
In closing, there are a lot of fish out there just now. Knowing exactly where they are and what to use to consistently produce under the many varying conditions out there, certainly goes a long way towards ensuring success. As noted, several of the better guides are on that program right now. As I have put in the time and effort out there, I have a decent understanding of those parameters myself. I would hazard a guess that were I to take the sports rig out tomorrow, I wouldn't find much problem loading up quick and easy limits - it IS that good. For any that know me, feel free to drop a line. Don't mind sharing a little info that might help your day out there.
Now back to your regularly scheduled wine and cheese festival... [}
