Tuna Talk

what kind of photos are you looking for Kelly?

I had the camcorder running most of the time, but I could probably pull some screen shots...stills, I think I only snapped away with Sculpins camera....maybe he has some gooders?

I'd be happy to contribute if I can. I never got the chance but I think a cool photo for the shootout would be 2 anglers holding a Tuna rod like a rifle, with the picture taken from the tips of the rods, looking up the guides towards the anglers....

catching up...

I've missed that last week of posts, so I'm going back a few pages...
-about divers and using the Luhr Jensen planers - I got a chance to try some Sea Striker HS 8 planers this past week in Huatulco (see pic ) I didn't bring the right style of release clip so we didn't run them very long, but I'm sure another test will sort that out. Using 200lb spectra as a handline ( with gloves ) the planer was down at least 25'. I got this idea from an article on Pakula's website (http://www.pakula.com.au/index.php/trip-teaser) only I was trying to have a scotty style clip hold the lure n line to the rear of the planer so the planer and lure were NOT attached after a bite. The planer stayed down alright, but the 10 - 12' skirts were too much drag for the release clip to hold. ( my winter mental experiments are in full swing ) I hope to sort it all out by spring and have a diving combo that will pull Albacore sized lures without having to play the fish with anything else inline

another possiblity is ;http://www.pakula.com.au/index.php/witchdoctor-exciter

I was looking at the Old Salty planer boards that look the same as the Sea Striker ones. I bet they will work with just a rubber band instead of the Scotty clip. I think Old Salty show's how it's done on the website. Cool that you tried them.

I saw that witchdoctor as well and thought about making some homemade ones. I bet Birdsnest could come up with something even better!!! I am a firm believer in the attractors for initial presentation. Once your on the school I think FB has it right in all you need is straight out lures out there. Bring in all the hardware and just go to town!

Just off memory... Bluewater brings his anch up from Peru so it will vary next year - $29? Interesting fellow to talk with - owner has Commercial Tuna boat friends/customers - strongly suggested heavy brine and adding anchovy oil to the chum before tossing out ( more scent to stay above the thermocline as the uneaten chum sink )

Hub City was $.55/lb for big Pilchards ( block 10kgs ), $.65/lb for Herring ( block 20kgs ) and $.85/lb?? for IQF Anchovies ( 20kgs ) I did buy some Pilchards since I was on my way to Port Renfrew, but no Anch. cause the box they showed me had only smallish 3.5 to 4" in it...and I had no way to keep it all frozen

Witchdoctor duplication

interesting topic. I have heard about guys using flashers as attractors but I think this witch doctor thing would work nice and be out of the way. Also may bring more fish close in bad vis situations and in green water. I would like to duplicate that thing but would have to get one in my hands to feel the weight and balance before I could start. Silly as it sound I bet a guy could make it out of 2x4. With some ballast, paint and flashy stickers. I like the idea. May as well have a zuker behind it too. Lol. Also that bird he shows there are very easy to make. The key is to have ballist in the bottoms.

It's not silly at all-I've seen what look pretty much like coffee table legs all dolled up for sale on EBay.

EDIT-if you're really cheap a half filled bleach bottle tied on a rope dragged 15' back in the wake makes for all kinds of splashing.

Then there's these things easy to make yourself not sure if they're that effective on Tuna though.

I read all I could on the Witchdoctor attractor and watched a couple youtube vids... It WAS a 2x4 originally w a strip of SS flatbar on the bottom for ballast. The unit is 18" long...

The Pakula site has a 'chat with Peter' link - I asked about using the WD for Tuna and got a reply that amounted to "maybe... go try it" - So it's on my winter build n test list - I'll post results once I have a chance to fish some winters springs.

This has me thinking about " spread" under the surface.

OK, go with me on this. I was thinking of tossing, you guessed it, the kitchen sink out the back of the boat....figure it will splash real good at 7 knots. Prior to tossing it over, I'm going to tape a crap load of aluminum foil strips to the sink...I'm going to call that the "super flasher".....then I'm going to run a single zuker lure with a hook......I dunno...I think it will kill em.

I don't mean to poke fun but some of these things are getting a little out there. But definitely entertaining. Loved the bumper/fish combo lol

Nick.. you just wait until your project is finished... then we'll see who dreams up odd fishing tactics over the winter - Ha ha

But semi-seriously, I think many folks believe in using 'dummy flashers' for salmon and hali trolling - why not the Witchdotor thingy for them too?

If I were to build an attractor, I wouldn't try to re-invent the wheel. Salmon flashers have proved effective so I would give those a try. I've been sitting here thinking about this for a few minutes now, and here is how I would approach 'attractors'....I would use the downriggers and run dummy salmon flashers or a daisy chain off of a pancake 15lb ball with the stainless fin. Daisy chain off the fin, and a dummy flasher above it. Drop it to 30 to 40 feet with the boom arms facing the bow parallel to the sides (so they don't get in the way of hand bombing fish on-board) and leave your top water lures out the back as per usual. I would also incorporate Birds PMO's or actual outriggers.
My theory being the daisy and flasher would look like a small school of larger fish below your bait presentation of tasty Zuker squids or the like. It would only work if the pancake downrigger weight would track straight and not sway to much side to side and possibly tangle up in the prop. I assume a round cannonball would drag to much including the tackle attached to be possible.
If it worked I would think that you could leave the downrigger attractor setup down for the entire time you are fishing and barring a tangle with a kelp bed, it wouldn't have to come up. This would also rely on maintaining your trolling speed once you hook up as too slow and the fish would have a chance to tangle in the downrigger line.

I don't see the erratic splashing of some of these lures being helpful or attractive to the fish. Just my opinion. Maybe if the splashing was in one spot (like a wounded fish or bird might do), but not moving at 7 knots...the witch doctor could be the most promising looking in my opinion, but again its a big hunk of hardware and line that is the first to come out when you hook up. I want to just worry about the fish on the line. Not working like a mad man to bring in multiple attractors because they will likely be in the way when it comes time to land the fish.

Otherwise I'll keep it simple as I've only seen simple work (as simple as tuna fishing can be that is...)

Why not try running one of the old style deep "6" depth releases with a flasher dragging behind; then if you need to release it and get it to come to the surface out of the way you just give a good pull on the cord and release the angle and drag and it should come to the surface; you may need to tighten the holding mechanism with a pair of pliers to hold under the strain of 5-7 knots; but it should get you down to where you want to be; and if many of us dig through our parents old fishing boxes or hit some garage sales; you should be able to get them cheap. Worth a try!

Who should I get in contact with regarding a sponsor for the shoot out in September? Or if they would like to PM me as I have a Nanaimo Heavy Equiment dealer that may be interested in helping out.

Osama Bin Hopper or Kelly. Both are on this board.
