Tuna Talk

Looking forward to getting an opportunity to chase tuna this summer, I've been winter fishing springs the past few weeks to get everything dialed in on the new (to me) boat! Subscribed!!!!!!

Here you go Bridy. Finally can post a video thanks FB. we had a double header which turned into a sextupleheader the real action starts at 2:50

fish plants in Ukee process pilchars in late august....im sure you could get a few hundred pounds for a good price!

Yep.. They freeze them in big blocks. I know lots of prawn boats use them so you might be able to get them even cheaper if those guys have any leftovers around the end of June.

Great video's J. Loved the quad from the Shootout, that's actually our boat talking on the VHF in the first couple of minutes. As calm as the captain sounded, we were into them just as thick.....

[on the VHF]
"We got 2 after the 4 than ya, 1 more after the two. Not looking good for us for ice and fuel, well fuels not looking the worst....."

It's cool knowing what we were doing at that moment, to see what you were doing at the same time...pretty much the same thing. Killing Tuna!
That video was just great, especially when you hopped to the handline, bombed the fish on the deck, and jumped back on your other rod. Good times!!

My only thought, considering our convo earlier, would be to keep that throttle up! I think it is a big factor in how many fish we haven't lost. If you are still doing 5 to 7 knots, we have yet to see a fish avoid our cutting table ;) Of course this is a little more commi than sporty lol! It also helps in keeping the lines straight and we rarely see them tangle with a fish on. No lines need to come in and you can just focus on getting the hooked fish into the boat and getting to the next rod. Once the fish is landed, pop the hook and get the line back in the water.

Thanks Silvo. THose are such good videos. Its hard to tell all of whats going on in the clips but if you have done it and seen it before well, i just held my hand out flat and it was shaking a bit just from watching. lol That boat is sure nice. Looks real wide.

We have found with the hand lines that it is best to get them in first. Close fish first then the far fish and as far as speed goes when hooked up, with the hand lines it does not really matter but with the rods you have to slow down and I agree that the boat should be moving as fast as it can while still getting those fish to the boat. Those barlbess hooks are great but if you fidle dadle with the fish at the boat, and the boat is going slow, they will spit. And they have a tendancy to swim ahead which really opens of a chance for the hooks to come out. Love the 5 gallon pails....handy.

when the fish gets to within 4 to 6 feet we grab the 200LB leader and fling them into the boat...as previously mentioned, its effective (51 for 53), and all we use is barbless. No gaffs, just man-handle those footballs into the endzone!

Ya the boat is very comfy on the pound out and in. I think its 8-6 or 8-9 wide. ya those 5 gal pails are funny, will try and get Istvan to use a garbage pail, more room for fish

I have stoped using the gaf as well. To messy and the "one timer" into the boat with the 150 and 200 lbs test is most effective and efficient. I like to wear gloves as well.

We found this out the hard way on our first trip this summer with my own boat. It was heart breaking I tell ya. We made it out there, we hooked up, then proceeded to lose the first two fish right at the boat. A was little of both. Some fiddle daddling and both swam ahead while trying to sink the gaff. I'm a firm believer in the one timer from now on lol.

C'mon Marty...

If anyone is putting together a crew of boats to go out and slam the tuna I'm in for 2013. Would be good to get a committed bunch together and go for it. Is there such a group? Looks like your running out of Tofino and sounds like many run out of Bamfield, myself out of Ukee but we could all meet on the horizon at big bank and continue the rest of the way. Would be a blast!

Hey guys I am going to put together a poster with all the info for next years shoot out. I was wondering if those who joined in last year could post some pics I could steal. DAK your buddy mentioned he had a bunch and was going to email them out. Any keepers? Cheers

Also any companies who are interested in sponsoring the derby next year, please contact Jeff (Osama) or myself and we will add your info to the poster etc.
