I don't think it was the Dabo Pins that resulted in our 7 hook-ups....I think it was, like most fishing, hard work and commitment to keep on trolling through the slow time.
I don't have the experience of Bird, Sculp, Slivo, or others out there...but the times we have ventured to the deep blue we have only needed one type of lure, on top of the water, in a tight group of 5-8 lures. It is effective when it gets thick with Tuners as there is no messing around bringing in wild tackle like the dabo pins, or the mice that is bouncing around, tangling up with fish on the line. When just fishing zukers or tuna clones, we have yet to need to bring in any rods when we have a fish on, and as soon as the fish hits the deck that lure is right back out in the water. No messing around...my guess is you want to keep as much gear out there when you hit the school...not having bouncing and tracking tackle makes it that much easier to be efficient, which I think is huge when landing that boat load. I guess we haven't run into a really slow day @ the tuna grounds yet, but when it does happen my guess is the boat will be the biggest attractor, with the Dabo's or others being a far far off second. I think there is something to be said for a bit of uniformity of your lures, I think something splashing around erratically may work against the lures tracking so nicely, waiting to be gobbled up! Tuna and salmon alike school bait fish into a bait ball so it is easier to pick off fish in the ball. They tend to attack the ball of bait (from footage I've seen), rather than attacking the lone fish on the outside of the group. The same can apply to your layout of lures...I think lol.
I really did like the action of the PMO's and the Diver boards, but I still question whether it is necessary and if the same catch results would have been achieved, or possibly higher, with a simple layout of lures acting as a tight school of bait, which is what I think is more attractive than a big wide spread. I have read Bird's successful catches on his divers or planers out performing the other gear in the water, but if you didn't have them deployed, would you have likely caught fish anyways?
As far as the double hooks. Its all we have used (barbless) and are currently at a total of 51 landed and 2 lost. 1 was lost because we wanted to see what an Avet drag could do, and it ripped er clean out of the fish's mouth lol, and the other one was at the boat, where after hand bombing 15 or so onto the deck, I had a moment of weakness and the fish took advantage and scooted away.
Look forward to running more handlines like Sculpin had rigged as those were tons of fun, although when placed low to the water they to can cause some hang-ups when bringing fish to the boat with a rod. All I know is until I am proven otherwise with first hand experience, I will just need a pack of zukers and clones, black and purple, and zuccini, and I'm off to the slaughter
Tuna fishing is new to many of us, it all ends up being a lot of "I think" and "maybe its because" scenarios. Hopefully it all means more successful outings for this group. 7 months and counting right??
