Tuna Talk

Those dipsy divers look cool too. Especially if they pull left or right.

I played around with this during the Bamfield Tuna shoot out but no bites.

I won't give up on it yet. I will try it again. I don't know the best place for it in the spread however. Maybe I need two of them?. I only have one right now. We ran it out in the clear water but maybe I should try it in the clear streak between the prop wash and the wake.

These are the Yozuri Dabo pins we run in the prop wash really close to the boat. The closest lure is 12' away on the hand lines. I think they work initially for finding the school but they may be overkill once your on them. I don't know yet. But they seem to work for finding them.

I have towed some of those around but they were an awkward color. I like the size and color of those. how far back did you have the stinger, the one with the hook in it?

You can't see the stinger in the pic but it's about 36" down and out of the picture.

"Spreader Bar" for the life of me I couldn't think of the name at the time of posting lol. I bought these off Ken a QCove Tackle. They are just a standard hootchie size lure.

That should work. All I know that the stinger is to be obviously separate from the "school", the obvious straggler.

My buddy really loves these splash bird strings and I agree they do plash really really good but I find them fragile and very tangle to manage in the boat. I always bug him about them because if there is a birdsnest happening with the gear they are always a part of it. They sure do catch fish tho!!
And one other drawback of them is they are really long rigs and it can make it a bit more difficult to space the gear. When streched out they are up to 20 feet long.

I don't think it was the Dabo Pins that resulted in our 7 hook-ups....I think it was, like most fishing, hard work and commitment to keep on trolling through the slow time.

I don't have the experience of Bird, Sculp, Slivo, or others out there...but the times we have ventured to the deep blue we have only needed one type of lure, on top of the water, in a tight group of 5-8 lures. It is effective when it gets thick with Tuners as there is no messing around bringing in wild tackle like the dabo pins, or the mice that is bouncing around, tangling up with fish on the line. When just fishing zukers or tuna clones, we have yet to need to bring in any rods when we have a fish on, and as soon as the fish hits the deck that lure is right back out in the water. No messing around...my guess is you want to keep as much gear out there when you hit the school...not having bouncing and tracking tackle makes it that much easier to be efficient, which I think is huge when landing that boat load. I guess we haven't run into a really slow day @ the tuna grounds yet, but when it does happen my guess is the boat will be the biggest attractor, with the Dabo's or others being a far far off second. I think there is something to be said for a bit of uniformity of your lures, I think something splashing around erratically may work against the lures tracking so nicely, waiting to be gobbled up! Tuna and salmon alike school bait fish into a bait ball so it is easier to pick off fish in the ball. They tend to attack the ball of bait (from footage I've seen), rather than attacking the lone fish on the outside of the group. The same can apply to your layout of lures...I think lol.

I really did like the action of the PMO's and the Diver boards, but I still question whether it is necessary and if the same catch results would have been achieved, or possibly higher, with a simple layout of lures acting as a tight school of bait, which is what I think is more attractive than a big wide spread. I have read Bird's successful catches on his divers or planers out performing the other gear in the water, but if you didn't have them deployed, would you have likely caught fish anyways?

As far as the double hooks. Its all we have used (barbless) and are currently at a total of 51 landed and 2 lost. 1 was lost because we wanted to see what an Avet drag could do, and it ripped er clean out of the fish's mouth lol, and the other one was at the boat, where after hand bombing 15 or so onto the deck, I had a moment of weakness and the fish took advantage and scooted away.

Look forward to running more handlines like Sculpin had rigged as those were tons of fun, although when placed low to the water they to can cause some hang-ups when bringing fish to the boat with a rod. All I know is until I am proven otherwise with first hand experience, I will just need a pack of zukers and clones, black and purple, and zuccini, and I'm off to the slaughter :)

Tuna fishing is new to many of us, it all ends up being a lot of "I think" and "maybe its because" scenarios. Hopefully it all means more successful outings for this group. 7 months and counting right??

All good points and questions indeed. Thats why it is so much more interesting with other boats out but when your really into them not much maters. Make sure you keep driving back over the "spot" that is one thing for sure.

Yup, really good stats with those hooks and ya maybe the single just tear right out of the fishes mouth. Thats no good.

Absolutely. On the slow days, and I have had many, it is hard not to put out a variety and honestly when I get the first one whatever it was that I caught it on I put 4 or 5 of the same out. and usually by the end of the day I will be only fishing one or two colors. Maybe it is an idea to try to keep the same stuff on one side. Sadly the one really good day with many boats I did not have a radio so I missed out on what the other boats were using. Also when you have been out for 3 hours without a bit and the other boat gets a double on Blue or what ever color it is who does not put down blue after 3 hours??? I cant help myself. In that case I am going to switch my stuff up.

True indeed. The best scenario is more boats to help learn more of what is really going on most importantly finding the fish.

Good post FB.

Seems the guys on this thread really like them: http://www.ifish.net/board/showthread.php?t=415833

And there is a picture of me in there....weird. One of my pictures. that is the nature of the internet. Who is Bait Bait over there?

I will keep using them as they work IMO. I don't know who Bait Bait is. If he's up here in Canuckville he should speak out.

I hear you FB on your success's on both your trips. Me having more experience than you on tuna fishing well let's just say that's up in the air but I'm flattered. I might have 2 trips on yeah buddy and that's about it lol. I research as hard as you do you addict lol. When it all boils down we are in the same boat lol.

My personal opinion on your two successful trips was a lot of research and hard work and luck pure and simple. You guy's were on em like a fat kid on a smartie. The trip with me you might be questioning me and firelight changing lure color's while you where sleeping up front lol. We did end up with some but again I am not convinced that color made the difference. I agree that that trip it was just pure persistence. I will still use the Dabo pins in the prop wash to start off with as the theory is they act like bigger fish already near the boat and it is a confidence thing. The PMO's or splash boats have proven themselves almost every trip so they stay and they get the two outside lures out there. The mouses have caught fish as well but not as many as the spash boats so we will see. I will definately try the all lure method without any attractors and see how that goes. You guys really have a good system down for keeping the gear in the water and that is a huge factor for sure.

We have pic's but not much information about green and silver Deadly Dick's that seemed to slaughter them so all of us trolling guy's are out to lunch lol.

I think that the better conditions you find ie: clear blue warm water with the schools of smaller fish size average, the less you have to worry about all the details. those fish are usualy chompin hard.

Fishing the green water or blue water that isn't to clear is another story. Then its different.

That's kinda what I was getting at. I have heard when your on them they will eat the paint off the bottom of the boat!!!!

I want to do an overnighter too with some other boats but, the fishing cant be too good for I will not have enought ice for 2 good days of fishing.

I'm in on the over nighter big time. You can always have enough ice. Just know your boat's limit's. I'm good for about 24 fish I figure.

Along with my regular big fish cooler I have a half tote like this
starting-out.jpg

so I bet that I could do 40, heads off. the key I think is to slush em for 3 hours and then re pack them with just enough ice to keep them cool.

I realy want to pay close attention to bleeding this year!!

I bought the Deadly Dicks for "casting iron". From years past tuna trolling I allways wanted to see big schools in calm water, last year I saw those conditions and could'nt hook one fish casting! So out of frustration I put them out on the troll way back and they hammered em!!!I changed out the stock trebles with 8/0 singles and landed every fish, even had fish busting the serface chacing after them!!!Fun stuff!... next year I will have chum (chopped herring/Pilchard)at the ready, and get on the "bait stop" fisherie.

For trolling, that black/purple is a must for overcast days,FB proved that! I tied up some pink UV daisy chains and they worked great out there for overcast also!
The double barbless 9/0 hooks are the best for zukers 7 inch,I need to find some small 5/0 doubles for small gear...

Over nighter last year was awesome!!! cant wait to do it again and target Pomfret and shark all night...last time we had way to many tuners on board to process...cut into our night fishing time!
Birdsnest,I spend some time in Tofino with family, allways looking for a buddy boat, meet up for a beer next time Im over there?

No biggie. I am not offended.

Me too. I hope I can source a bait supply other than the trayed stuff. Its pretty pricey for chopin up and chuckin out.

Sure, any time.

I could only wish but if I guy was out on good days it would afford some time to try some different ways of getting them. Cast fly??? I am going to be trying the deadly dicks as well. I still have not caught one on anything cast.

For chum bait you missed out. The cancer fundraiser is a good place to load up $40 bought me enough chum bait to end up giving away about 10-15 pounds to a few boats at the shootout.

Super gay posts by the way Crabby...posting is gay.
