Tuna Talk

Here a couple of shots of the big 10 bucks I spent at Minerva's in Cabo. Two little flat faced peanut type lures. No jets. Just clear bobble eyed. I hope to use them with great success on the splash boats that Birdsnest traded me. This particular splash boat seems to outfish the other one. I think the blue white bottom works better than all orange. This is just observation over 3 trips.

Here is a comparison against a standard length Zuker broom lure. Both lures are zucchini color which seems to work good for us and will continue to be my go to color unless I hear otherwise on the radio lol.

Everyone was talking about smaller lures so I thought I would try a couple out without breaking the bank (which I already did this year). Just wondering what folks think about rigging these with a single Owner hook instead of the standard Mustad tandem?

Cheers,
John

Those boats look like something pretty easily carved up yourself. Do people do that?

Yeah Birdy has been playing around with them for quite a while. I think he started by copying the Yozuri ones you can buy. They work awesome man. PMO's (poor man's outriggers). They will get your lure at least 20' out the side in the wake.

Some 2x4 off cuts, a compound mitre saw, a belt sander, and your good to go.

Those small ones look sweet! I am excited about trying the smaller ones next year. The PMO's(Love that label) are pretty easy to make. All you need is a band saw, a belt sander or grinder with sanding disk and a drill to make them. Just duplicate a commercial on the best you can but the real secret is to have some lead ballast in them. Make more than you need for some certainly seem to work better than the others.

The color thing really has me stumped. The problem probably is that I just can not find fish consistently enough to really make some clear observations.

I am totally sold on the tandem hooks. This year on the day we had that 4 inch mexiflag fishing it caught most of the fish. it came with a smaller tandem hook that had barbs. I was weary about that hook but they really held on good. Not one fish got off. I have lost alot of fish on singles in years past.

Did you put ballast in the ones I have? I can't tell.

I just go with the Franko method and run all the same colored lures and it seems to work. No lone buffalo lol or whiskey rod. I like how you keep everything pretty tight to the boat as well. Seems to defy the theory that outboard powered boats need to run longer than inboards. It sure seems to work for you!

I don't have a clue about color either but for now I will stick with what has worked as a starting point in my limit experience with this fishery. What's the smallest tandem you can get? I think the ones I'm running on the Zuker's would be too big no?

It may be that fish can use the single hook as a kind of 'crowbar' to lever themselves free during the fight-the solution to that would be using a ball bearing swivel attached to the hook I guess.

Maybe an Owner with a relatively short shank that buried itself really deep quite quickly (as those lethally sharp units do) would change the game some.

I think your crow bar effect has merit for sure. I think I may try some just for kicks to see for myself. I do like those smaller tandems that Birdsnest posted. Anyways it's a long way's away yet lol. Winter time blues but tinkering.

Yes, they have to have ballast or they will dive too often.

Summer is a long ways away and hunting season just ended for me so its tinker time! I will be ordering some of those smaller hooks when I find out which ones for cetain I want. I will let you know before I order them if you want to share the shipping.

I also have those planner boards that I do not think I will be using ever again if any one is interested. They worked flawlessly.

Sounds good.

No I think they will be mustad. I may have a source to get them at a realy good price but I have to confirm the size I like.

Probably. the orange ones about the size of a small pie plate. I will always be using those from now on!!!! FOR CERTAIN!!!!

A' they dive right down
B' they are pretty much weedless
C' they catch fish
D' they come right to the surface when a fish is on it. who comes up with this stuff....amazing.

they just cant really be used on a fishing rod.

I do not know what it is about using canon ball I just think the fish do not like them. maybe it just me. a guy could use a dive board on a down rigger instead of a cannon ball. It would work just fine but you might need something dragging off the back of the dive board to stabilize it.

I tried on of these the year before.

The silly dipsy diver. they can be set to pull to the side, left or right. It actually worked just fine but the problem was that at 6 kn i had to set the release so tight that it was hard to retrieve at 6 kn because i could not trigger the release. I am going to play around with these a bit more now that I have had success with dive board and see the importance and advantages of having stuff down. The dipsy diver may cost less too. 1 dive board is 45$ about. A dipsy diver is $20 or so bucks.

I figure that i may be able to run 4 downlines if I have 2 dipsy divers down, one pulling to the left and one pulling to the right.

I do not know how may tuna it will catch until it gets ripped in two tho. Could be an issue. Maybe put a safety cord to each end of it.
