Wish I could run into some tuna on WCVI. A couple of years ago I even went out and made "meat lines" and bought all the crap I need for tuna… haven't seen hide nor hair of one since!

Give "Sushihunter" a shout! He's the only one in that area that I know that actually targeted tuna and did have success, out of Esperanza.

If there were a handful of boats that wanted to head out from the Bamfield area the 3rd week of August, I'd be game to give it a try. I've got some buddies from down in Oregon that are tournament tuna fishermen who have access to the subscription ocean temperature charts that will tell you how far you need to run offshore. If weather and temperature were good, it would be the trip of a lifetime.

Thanks, Charle - We found Tuna out in the "deep" water where the shelf drops off suddenly from about 700' to over 1300'.

The trick is the temperature of the water - it has to be warm, and you are looking for sudden breaks between cool and warm of about 1 degree - that's where you want to fish, along those temp. breaks.

There are a couple of websites that track temperature and plankton, you need that info to find out if it is worth the trip out to target Tuna. Otherwise you are just wasting gas.

The best info on the subject is here: http://www.coastsidefishingclub.com/Trolling-Jigs-For-Albacore-bob-franko

Bob Franko is the guy who showed me how to catch them, and this article by him describes almost everything you need to know except the exact location of the Tuna.

Good luck, and be sure to let us know if you locate any!

I will be in the Renfrew area and I am game if you can make that sometime between the 5th through the 9th of August? Going offshore, that is only a radio call away to hook up! :)

I'll be in Ukee, but if the commercial boats say they are within range, I WILL</u> be in! Easy to triangulate with boats from Bamfield. Will send you contact details TenMile well before. Be FUN to get in on that again!!

Cheers,
Nog

The only coordinates I have are N48 07.193 W126 02.018 and I have NOT fished it? That is about a 67 mile run from Renfrew?

If anyone is looking for crew I'm in.

Have gas money gear and experience-will travel. [8D]

Careful what you wish for, as right now, I only have a crew of two and if I run 50-60 miles offshore, I would be looking for at least a crew of three, if not four... so you just might have your wish come true? But, I will not run out there alone! And, my insurance limits me to 75 miles offshore!

Did the tuna thing out of Port Hardy summer before last. Went around the north tip of the Island to Cape Scott then due south. It would be easier running out of Winter Harbour but the boat was too big to trailer.

We caught a bunch and it was the most fun I have had fishing ever. The trick is when you get a hit keep moving and you are guarenteed multiple strikes. We had a bunch of triple headers and one quadruple. They hit lures tolled within 15 feet of the boat.

I wound up buying a mess of tuna lures and rods, luckily when the canuck buck was over a buck USD.

Last year the current wasn't close enough and I won't run more than 20 miles off shore up here. At least I am ready this year.

YES!

Will be all over this one should the current dare push in enough. Nog does have the contacts to help support this one. He coon'd pretty phukin' good last go round if memory serves...

Hey Osama,

I'm going to be in Bamfield for two weeks in August -- first week having fun with the kids around the Broken Islands and the second week fishing. I think you live there so as the date gets closer, would you be able to help quarterback an outing for the 3rd week? I don't know whether I can get Internet access there so bringing together a Tuna hunting party might be hard for me to coordinate during the critical last 2 weeks.

I think if we had 3 or 4 boats (sounds like we do already) and a weather window we could be good to go. I've never fished Tuna and it sounds like some others are new to it as well, so maybe one of you experienced guys could provide a list of basic essentials -- Tuna rigs, rod setups, transport and storage recommendations etc...

Depending upon which day we go, I may have an empty seat or 2 as well. I will contact my US Tuna buddies to see if they can help with the Satellite Ocean Temperature readings close to the date.

If you are interested in the ocean surface temperatures, you might want to look at this! :)

http://las.pfeg.noaa.gov/oceanWatch/oceanwatch.php#

On the left side, look for 'GOES (individual images)','N. American W. Coast' Click it!
On the right side look for "Choose a region:", open the window and choose "Vancouver"
Look down to "Select Output format:" open that window and choose "View in Google Earth"
Right underneath that… Click, "Get It Now"
Another window opens and asks if you, " Click to download Google Earth kml file" Click it!
Follow the rest of the directions!
Wella, your ocean temperatures over layered in Google Earth, directly from NOAA!

So, does someone want to confirm that I found, what I think I found? :D:D

Anyone know if the warmer waters are moving in closer yet? Headed to Bamfield for 2 weeks Saturday and I'd be game to try a day of tuna hunting.

The commercial tuna boats that are restricted to Canadian waters are still sitting idle in Ukee. Methinks that is an indication... [V]
