tuna fishing

tarrafin is showing the hot water off winter harbour, it came in last week then moved back out, looking at the projected currents its should be back up in 8-10 days, off pices canyon and the 2000fathom drop, was crazy fishing there two years ago, when the water came in.

...the water is starting to show a great opportunity for tuna off the coast of BC. This week they were caught 60 miles off Ukee - there were good numbers reported and we were told that it looks like they may come in closer if the currents continue.

Dunno where you're getting your info from? Spoke with no less than 5 Tuna Skips yesterday - all still sitting aboard one boat in Ukee for a Bar-Bee, and NONE</u> gearing up to move any time very soon...

heading out wednesday or thursday off of triangle / cape scott area, tarrafin shows good water 20-30 miles off, weather may be a little rough, will post report when back

you guys hear that one was caught in the Consultants Derby?? First I've ever heard - was out from Pedder Bay while hali fishing - around 7-8 pounds.

Didn't get the chance to fish them while in Bamfield for the past 2 weeks, but one of the Commercial boats was selling fresh tuna right off the ice for $1.50 per lb off the dock by the store. Unfortunately, we saw him the first day of our trip so only purchased a single small 14lb fish (for $17) and it provided us 4 EXCELLENT meals.

that I am - the guy that came in with all the halibut says they caught the tuna as well. He was blown away.

tried to get out today too rough 5 meter seas and 40 knot winds, commercial guys are getting them 30 miles off winter harbour, will try again tues when this weather goes by

We got a few tuna per opening in late August in the seine at the blueline off Carmanah circa 1979-1982. I was young and dumb then and didn't ask many questions. I'm still dumb, but I think we called them skipjacks.

hot water is right in off the beach at winter harbor, 5-10 miles off for 60 deg water onlt 20 for 62 its as good as it will be off the west coast now

One of our boats picked up a tuna about 18miles west of the lighthouse, up near Pisces Canyon. Only tried for a half hour, then went hali fishing. The tuna was over 25lbs. Had humbolt squid take my hali-bait as I was letting it down. After awhile, I had them going after it about 3' from the boat. Never hooked any up, just played with them.

Hey Poppa,

Sorry for the late reply, spent the last 3 days with the wife and daughters camping on the big boat, playing around Quatsino and Neurosis Inlet, doing some crabbing and prawning. Girls caught there first Coho on the trip while trolling in front of Mahatta Creek. As far as the blue line, it was offshore, hugging the canyons offshore. That was on Sunday, haven't been offshore since. Looking at the Sea Surface Temps, the water has cooled off, and with the forcasted storm force SE's, we will not be going that far offshore in the near future. Season is winding down and will be over on the long weekend as usual. Season was probably the best we have had in the last 11 years, except for the constant NW gales in July:(, due to the lack of rain up here. We had a whole month without rain here in the Harbour. Spent more time on the hook this year, due mainly to the 1 per day - 2 in possesion on the hali.

Hope that your season was great down there, sounds like it was. Hopefully we will be able to get out the tuna grounds later on in the week, but not looking to good. Would be nice to get a few for the sushi nights back home:D Take care and keep in touch.

Regards,
