Not sure if you're in the clear by eating wild game.

One time we were watching bears near the Somass estuary near Clutesi Haven in Port.

One was walking along with about 6ft of whitish wormy thing hanging out it's butt. We figured it was a tapeworm.

Bears get them all the time.

Tapeworms are quite common in many varieties of fish, springs of course (halibut too as Wolf noted). We see them pretty much all the time from the troller and sport rigs.
Some are transmissible to us Two-Legs, many are not.
Freeze to low temps or cook and Good To Go.

Ever wonder why most of us Bio-Types never eat raw fish?? Now you know... :D

Bon Appetite! :p

How small are the larvae? If you ingest a couple that are so small you could not see them (let's say while cleaning fish you do not see any biggies but your hands are covered in blood, guts and what not) do they pose a threat?

I dont eat bear!!!! LOL LOL
moose elk deer for me

I used to unload lots of commercial seiners, gillnetters and packers. Tapeworms were abundant in late season net caught chum salmon. Large parasite loads, along with malnutrition, are generally associated with overpopulation of a species. You might feel safe eating wild game but if you've seen the results of a necropsy on a deer that came from a highly populated area.... :). Most of the parasites affect organs, there are brain flukes (flatworms), liver flukes, nosebot flies, warbler flies, ringworm, hookworm and tapeworms. Do a google on any one of those critters. Some of the life cycles involved will make you shudder.

moose elk deer for me

I have field dressed a lot of moose and deer and found both large round and flat worms in them. The two inch round ones wiggle like crazy and those large liver flukes in moose look like something out of a horror movie. I was surprised to see a tape worm in a Chinook and will use a little more caution when i am cleaning them and hand washing after from now on.

I am surprised to see the amount of eating of fresh raw salmon over the years. Now I am seeing fresh raw halibut ceviche which while it's safety is defended by those serving it I will never touch it.

Seeing tape worms in salmon is pretty normal for me. Its gross but it's natural.

dint you know that if you drink lots hard booze with raw fish that you won't get worms,,,

thats why none of us get worms, i been eaten raw stuff from the ocean all my life,,never a worm,
maybe cleaning and prep has something to do with it or maybe its the rum?

IVE seen that in the guts but never in the meat of moose or deer and seen a many in my time back in the 90 seen the bad parasites on moose that was another thing thats was rather gross.....

Picked up a beaut today around Malcolm Island. A perfect fish. And totally loaded with tape worms. Also had a pin worn in the flash, which I haven't seen before. First time I've seen a wormer this far south.
