Summer tuna trip from Bamfield-anyone interested?

Hey guys, with the Big El Nino forecast for this year I think we are going to have lot's of warm water on the coast this summer, and that means tuna will be around close to the coast.

Anyone interested in joinging us for an offshore overnight tuna trip? I was thinking about August 30-31, Sept 1 somewhere in there. Overnight at Mills Landing first night, figure things out, gas up boats and jerry's, ice the coolers, make a plan, head offshore the next morning 40-60 miles out or whatever (use satellites, ocean temps, tuna trackers, tips from fisherman) spend the night rafted or anchored offshore somewhere and head back the next day, stay at Mills that night.

We could prob accommodate about 20 people if your not fussy on beds/pullouts etc...at Mills Landing, guys could sleep on the boats too if there's lots of interest.

Should be an unreal trip, I've always wanted to do this, but we've never got it organized early enough.

We should go as a big fleet, 24 footers and up, I think we'd be much more successful at finding tuna out there with lots of boats. Who's in?

I'd be very interested in doing that. I'm sure rafting up and sleeping in the middle of the ocean will scare the living $h*t out of me, but I'd love to give it a try weather permitting of course.

I've got a 26' Pilothouse and can take 2or3 passengers if I don't get any buddies to come along.

Millsy.....I would definitely be interested!!

I'll hold TenMile's hand if he get's too scared....or just pour some booze down his throat. [:p]

I am interested. I don't have the boat for it though, so I'd have to book passage with someone else. What I do have is 8 years of commercial tuna experience, which includes lots of time on the open ocean, pretty good knowledge of tuna signs both on the screen and on the water, how to get the gear working, how to haul fish (moot if we are using rods, but still...), etc. In my extremely biased opinion, I am an invaluable asset on any tuna boat. Also, I can probably massage up-to-date info out of a few friends when the time comes.

Regardless of whether I get out this year, sounds like a great idea, and I'm sure you will all have a blast.

Don't forget to take the squid jigs, shark hooks and buzz bombs (for the pomfret)... there's more to do than just drink after dark in the blue water.

Definately interested. Do you think my 22' SeaRay SRV (1969 with brand new power) would cut it? I can pack 60 gallons of fuel, more with jerry cans. Have radar, chartplotter etc.

Id like to volunteer as a paying deckhand too-have all the gear needed rods/reels/Tuna lures galore.

Have been sportfishing Tuna south of the border since the mid 80's and have fished Albies out of Washington & Oregon

That's a long way out if you encounter bad weather with small boats. Sorry, I have way too much respect for how fast conditions can change and bite you in the a$$ to go out there. Good luck to you boys and make sure one of you has an AIS transceiver so the coast guard knows where you are and the big ships in the night fog know your position and don't run you over.

Signed....super chicken[:I]

I thought it was assumed deckhands pay their share so didnt post that. Just to clarify and not look cheap.
Didn't mean to make anyone look cheap.

Where are you Sushihunter ? Surprised you are not all over this thread ! Hey Jim you should really go on this trip!! You have had some great Tuna days out off Esperanza/Kyuquot with Bob Franko. Remember Aug 2007 ? Only 20-25 miles offshore too !!!
This photo I am sure will get the Tuna juices flow'in !!

Depending on how far they are out -- and how the weather is looking, this could also be a day trip. Start out at 3-4am, fish for 10-12 hours, fill the boat and head back...

As far as taking passengers, I'm more than willing. Not sure how many seats I will have yet but we can figure that out well before I'm sure.

Not really, your boat is not designed for offshore? Can't say I would enjoy refueling from jerry cans in rough seas - might not a good thing? Kind of a rule of thumb (for me), if the boat doesn't carry enought fuel on board to get me there and back - I really don't recommend, "jerry cans for going offshore". I also wouldn't do it, unless everyone had exposure suits and the boat I was on had an "offshore" life raft? AIS would be nice... DSC and radar, would be required! There is a "big" differance in 25 and 50 miles when it comes to offshore? If have to agree with the at least 24/25 foot, unless it is a super nice day?

I agree, 22 is too small for a trip like that. You'd be better off to get on a bigger boat with someone else, because it could compromise all/some of the trip taking a boat out there not suited for that. And of course all of this is weather permitting as Searun and Banana's have mentioned, it can get ****ty out there...but imagine if it was nice.

Worse comes to worse if it doesn't look good we pull the pin at the banks and fish for springs and butts, not a bad plan B. If it's real nasty looking than we can drink the night before and still fish Barkley for springs, it will be what it will be...

Lot's of options, but it'll never happen if we don't plan it.

I would definetly be interested in this! I have always wanted to do a trip like this but i have hesitated because we couldn't get enought boats together. I am running a 29ft Tiara with twin 375 Crusaders my fuel Capacity is 200 gal. I will be in Bamfield Aug. 27th ,28th & 29th I have the boat hauler booked to haul us off the rock on Aug. 30th. It would be one hell of a trip weather permiting!
cheers

Sounds like it would be a fun trip!

I don't know if I'll be able to join in, but I will keep watching to see if I can or not.

Just one comment about Tuna - bring L-O-T-S of ice. Tuna are warm blooded and will quickly spoil if not bled (and boy do they bleed!) and put on ice. If not, all you are doing is gathering Halibut bait and cat food.

Check the above link for how Bob Franko fishes Tuna. The guy is absolutely possessed when he's on Tuna. The article describes exactly how we fished off of Tahsis in 2007. Only difference was that we did not have the meatlines on the boat - only 3 rods. We had a double hookup within our first 5 minutes of fishing and it never really slowed down from there. To finish up the day, we picked up a limit of Halibut on the way home!
