SOOKE REPORTS spring/summer 2010

I think everyone knows where I tend to hang out, at least what end of the area in general. I was kinda upset by the July IFF report as Larry really edited it this time and the last paragraph doesn't make sense. I guess he has to fit it to a space size at the expense of the report flowing from start to finish. Whales at 6am yesterday resulted in slow fishing. A friend did manage a 44 pounder just ahead of the whales at the light. Sounds like Sooke's biggest so far this year. I managed a 10 pounder at 4pm and lost one nice jumper, (launched itself and shook the hooks) right on the beach (40ft of wager) quite sometime after the whales passed us. Sockeye and a few springs jumping all afternoon.

It is basically a true statement and it has pretty much proven, Westerly and Southern winds produce the best fishing results most of the time, but there is more to it than wind direction… It has more to do with high and low pressure systems. Salmon don’t know or care which direction the wind is coming from, but they do care about water temperature, currents, and food, which winds play a large role. Sometimes good, sometimes bad. The first thing any wind will do is stir the baitfish and create upwelling. In most cases off WCVI and south VI that would be, baitfish are pushed farther offshore unless you are in an inlet. In my case in Puget Sound, I just move from one side of the sound to the other. Goes back to find the bait – find the fish. With an easterly wind on WCVI, the baitfish will tend to scatter more resulting in the scattering of the salmon making it difficult to find them, but you still can. If you have, constant winds from any direction over two or three days it will push the bait and salmon to the windy side.

Pay more attention to the atmospheric changes. A period of unstable weather and/or big barometric shift puts the fish into a more negative mood than stable weather periods and watch for a the period prior to a drastic change as that can be some really good salmon fishing. In addition, remember a constant east wind will push the warm surface water offshore, and pull the coldwater to shore causing coldwater upwelling. Watch the water temperature, if you find that upwelling you will normally find the fish, as salmon prefer water roughly around 50 degrees these cold water currents will produce some good fishing regardless of wind direction. If you are close to shore on WCVI and fishing an easterly wind in 65-70 degree water (which I have seen)... good luck, and hope there are a lot of fish passing!

Low pressure creates "counter clockwise" winds
High pressure creates "clockwise" winds

Just my 2 cents! :)

And here I thought I could just bait a hook and send it down. But now I've got to think about wind, tides, currents, daylight, moon phases, bait size, roll, time of year, depth, light conditions, water clarity...[:I][:o)]:(

Did I miss anything?:) Sheesh, it's not wonder a few guys get all the fish.

Thanks for adding yet another layer of detail Charlie! :D

I think it's better to take a kid fishing.

The Royal Canadian Anglers Asoociation held their annual spring derby today and not a single spring waw weighed in. Most members fished sooke, so it must be really slow there.

A real grind today, saw one other teener at the dock. Scrathced hard for this one, 29.4 on the boat. Did not see another net raised.

If i hear the post, There coming guys be patient im going to freak out! They are not coming. The stocks are just diminishing and we keep telling ourselves there comming. Maybe we all need to wake up and realise that salmon runs shouldent vary by entire months year to year. It just doesent make any sense. Im up to 47 hours of trolling time on 14 pounder and one pin popper hit missed. That to me sounds like pretty horrible stats.

Just venting while the kicker motor gets fixed. Then I will spend this time burning gas doing what I love catching or not.

Im glad somone else feels the same way as I do! And honestly I believe the runs are not deminishing from sport fishing pressure. Even though its hard to prove when you see 400 boats fishing between victoria and sheringham!

its a lot of factors but we are kidding ourselves if we think sporties are not taking a toll on the fish. Just think about how many boats they pass by before they even get to sooke, let alone the SVI fleet. Its very sad but I'll be surprised if we are even fishing in 5 years.

We sit right on the dividing line between can fish and can't fish. (most of the year) Washington anglers get very little fishing in JDF and have so for about 10 years. The dividing line will continue a slow trek northward, 5 years left for us here is optimistic. Anyone who needs a reminder of how good it used to be and how badly it has become should go into the Times Colonist weekly "King Fishermen" entries to see just how many big fish used to be caught weekly! Hmm, I guess 4 per day was 2 or 3 too many. The nets did even bigger damage too and continue to do so.

Some of the trollers are hitting 90 pieces of medium-large per day off Rupert right now. My buddy blew through his quota right quick and is on a vacation now! Best he has seen in years.

Sooke however is geting pretty tough with maybe 4 weeks at best of decent fishing. My guess is last two in August and the first week of September.

Was up in Uci with Rambler last week, lots of teeners everywhere, some 25s. 15 fish in 2 hours on hoothies. Makes me bloody sick fishing Sooke.

I couldent agree more. That sad thing is more and more people are heading north to catch their fish and its only a matter of time untill the entire run is wipe'd out. Sooke salmon fishing makes me sick. Im only 21 but I remember days when I was 10-12 yrs old when we used to go out fishing to bring home somthing for dinner. Now we go fishing and cross our fingers and toes that we might get a freaking hit, and then you have to fend off seals and even killer whales. Its crazy. I have been saying that if we all care about our salmon stocks. We should completly stop retaining salmon for a minimum on 10 years commercial and sports. I know it would never happen. But it is very true. And im sure it would have a huge impact for the salmon that I hope my kids will get to catch. Look at what the coho have done. Last year was phenominal. Maybe they should look at how sucessful that was and think about our chinooks. I know for a fact that I could spend years without fishing if I knew there would be plentiful fish in 10 years. I know many of you guys use the salmon for a source of income from guiding. But somthing serious needs to be done.

about 6 years ago I stopped retaining ling in our waters because I felt so guilty of keeping them. Now im starting to get that feeling with chinooks.

Heres hoping we have a good run of coho's to play with later in the season. I know I will only be keeping one fish a trip to put on the table and anything else that I will keep with only be fish that will be eaten fresh when caught. No more fill the tub or freezer outlook!

-Steve

Well this is the first year in about 9 years that I won't be out to join you fella's. Unfortunately work prohibits me from heading to the coast this year.. I just had to phone and cancel my cabin and slip at S.S. [V] [V]

With that said,, I am not sure I will bother coming out to Sooke any longer. It really is getting to be a tough fish. If you are like myself and many others its not a cheap run. I usually come out for 7 - 10 days of fishing and just doing the tourist thing. When you bring out a family and add in all the cost's it gets to be quite expensive. When you go out to a place and the fishing is tough it makes it really is tough.. I will never stop coming out west and or spending time around the greater Victoria area it is like a second home to me but for the fishing part I am going to head to other spots..

Starting to look at Port Renfrew, Bamfield, Nootka some places on the west side. Like I said I will still bring some dollars to the area but certainly not what I have in the past. Probably do a 5 -6 day fish trip and then spend another 5 -6 days just hanging out around Sooke/Vic.

The loss of the fishery is going to cost that little area a lot of cash.. A few of us that frequent the Island quite a bit have nick named Sooke, Sookamble River..

Wolf,, I will miss our after fish beers together thats for sure but maybe I will see you in the spring time for some Hali fishing..

I sure hope you're right but if last august/september is anything to go by then it will be even worse then june and july. Last august was horrendous and sept. there wasn't even a point fishing springs. We kept saying maybe they are late and they never did show up. Renfrew was spotty and bamfield was poor on the inside most the season as well.

fishflyguy89 you got a good attitude, the old timers really got to start thinking like you and releasing fish, maybe keeping one for the table. This filling the freezer crap has got to stop, not that its even an option on SVI anymore.

sorry for the rant, just upsets me when I look at how it was when I first started fishing 16-17 years ago.

I had great days in Sooke for catchin' coho, pinks, and springs in from early 90's until 2009. I think Sooke chinook fishing would get better next year except this year, you never know. hard to predict. But maybe in August, it gets better.

If the season was to get better from now till the first week of sept I might have a slight change of heart! But from what I can see its just not going to happen. They have been catching good numbers in nootka and Ukee and Hardy for the past month. Whats going to change in sooke?
