SOOKE REPORTS spring/summer 2010

Swiss, Last two weeks August was sustainable last year, with a good average of two solid Springs per trip. September...up until the 18th was good too! June 09 was just unreel! Sure it is tough grinding it out, but I still do appreciate any day on the water. I am attempting to remain positively optimistic here;)

Im glad you can be optomistic Justin! Im sure there will be a few days in the future that will be good, and more then likly I will be at work doing flooring and not fishing. That is where the guides do get lucky, Fishing everyday possible makes hitting the run when it comes thru much easier, or so it seems from my standpoint. Maybe im wrong.

I have just joined the forum although i have been fishing Sooke for over 35 years. If you can remember back 10and 9 and 8 years ago we had the mackerel attack all along the coast and we are now seeing the end result. I have seen Cowichan Bay wiped out, Brentwood Bay wiped our, Bamfield almost wiped out and guess what...Sooke is almost there. Those of us that have been fortunate to have fished these areas can live in the past or we can work with what we have. If you love fishing it is not just for the catch. It is all the other wonderful things going on the water and fish is a bonus.. anyway enough ranting.. Sat. I lucked out and got 4 fish in the boat off Possession and this morning a 34lb. had to come in early but ther were a whole slew of fish starting to show .. tight lines folks

dug this up from Sept. 1st 2009 from Wolf

Man its tough seeing the odd one caught but with these tides and everything you hear from up and down the coast ill have to say this is the worst Aug. I have ever seen in sooke in the 25 years or so I have fished it, there have been good days and bad but it concerns me accually scares me to be honest!!!!!

Read the reports for august/sept last year guys, it sucked and this year looks to be worse! Not to beat a dead horse but its scary how fast its tanking out there.

hopefully the coho come in bigger and better then last year, I actually had more fun hitting double digits of coho on the steelhead rods then hitting one or two big springs.

Dehood great to hear your report though, gives some hope!!

I wonder if the downlside we've seen in the past 5-10 years in Sooke isn't directly related to the commensurate huge expansion of the fishery at Port Renfrew? Back in the 80's and 90's when I fished Renfrew a lot, 20 to 30 boats between Owen Point and Camper Creek was a busy weekend day, and pretty much no one bothered to go as far as Logan. On top of that, most of us mooched. Fast forward to last August when I counted over 150 boats between the Rockpile and Logan, everyone fishing with what we used to call "Sooke gear" - downriggers, flashers and anchovies.

Many of the old time trollers I've dealt with on the North Coast and WCVI have stated that they beleive that only a certain percentage of any run of fish are "biters."

I'd be willing to bet that 99% of the fish we see (used to see?) at Sooke swim right by Renfrew. I'd also be willing to bet that most of the "biters" are picked off either there or along the WCVI befre they get to ujs here in Sooke.

The same number of fish are getting caught pretty much every year, they're just getting caught in another location.

Further, these dire predictions of no fishing in 5 years, and runs getting wiped out by sport anglers are not really reflected in the evidence of what is getting back to the spawning grounds. Some runs are doing great while other aren't - its been like that for years. We knew it was going to be a tough spring due to the Nicola fish issue - why do you think that we still have restrictions in place, because there's too many fish around? The lower Fraser guys are totally off the water - it could be worse.

From what I've been told, the forecast looks good for particularly summer Thompson reds and lower Fraser whites. I'm going to remain positive about the local scene for August. I personally had a pretty good August and Sept last year too, whilemy July sucked. You had to be an idiot to not get fish for most of June last year. No one was predciting the end of the fishery then, were they? What a difference a year makes!

Cheer up guys, if you want to lay waste to 'em like we used to, just hitch up the boat and head to Renfrew like the rest of the crowd. Or, be a little more patient and enjoy the fact that you've got a pretty decent fishery right in your own back yard. It could be worse IMO.

Gooey.

I had look through some good pics from 10 - 25 years ago off Secretary and Otter. Some with 4 Springs each and 4 coho in the tub, with 4 of us jigging herring balls off the old mans 25 Bellboy. That was good fishing as sick as it was, keeping a limit was the norm back then. Many did it twice a day with an afternoon fish after Happy Hour at Sunny Shores. My Dad and Uncle used to comercially troll of the Head three miles off in the last week of April as did the entire Sooke Rufus Fleet, some may recall those old Sooke days. Sort of makes sense why it has died off so much in less then two decades. Maybe i will scan a few, and post them up on another thread.

Had a conversation tonight with the creel check person who was at Sunny Shores today. Of the 15 boats fishing for salmon, 8 salmon we kept, evenly spread out from Sheringham to the Trap shack. One boat had two salmon. What rating would you give that?

Am I not allowed to vent and say what a shame it is? I have looked thru my grandfathers photo albums of the past 40 years. Im no fool. And yes the cohos were great lastyear. And early this year when the winter springs were still around in numbers I marked alot of fish on the sounder. I did as you said and turned down the sounder sensitivity and havent been marking as many fish. But It doesent mean I was wrong all along. Were all going thru the bad times. Im just saying I know what it used to be and this is not it! I will collect that last .25cents of yours at the end of september when the runs doesent pick up and the springs dont get hot and heavy! Maybe we could use the biteme fishing derby results over the past 10 years to see what the stock have been doing? Are you willing to bet that there wont be a big decline in the results? Because I would put down 100$ that the fishing results wont be equal to or greater then 10 yrs ago!

Lets all face it its getting worse. And even if it does get better it would have to be fairly drastic to compensate the slow start of the season.

Just venting, Not trying to start anything or be a dick.

back to the fishing guys, I took out my buddy this AM. He was trying out his new rod and reel that his 1 year old daughter gave hm for Father's day. He hit a fish @630 at the trap and landed a 24#:D, he was over the moon. With all his enthuisiam, I forgot how slow the fishing was and totally enjoyed the fog and wind, the luckies and the sun[8D] when it finally appeared.

ill bet you that 25 cents thats for sure as im sure it will pick up, as for the results I can only say they were extreamly pi$$ED off at them look at the brochure it doesnt take a rocket scientist to see how mad they were...

I know my .25 cents is gone because it couldent get much worse then it is now. But i dont expect a super hot run to come blasting thru anytime this year! It just may get slightly more consistant!

those of us on the south side of the border have been feeling this pain for decades now. several things intersect to make fishing less and less productive: overharvest, by all concerned; mismanagement of the resource by the agency in charge, DFO for you WDFW for us. now mix in climate change, destruction of the environment impacting spawing streams, stir with way too many hatchery zombies and there you have it, **** fishing for all.

thinking outside the box, wolf, may put some fish in the box for your paying guests but it won't do a damn thing to fix the systemic issues.

.... Well then get a sail boat. [:o)]
Ill see your .25, Wolf, and say that it doesnt get much better.....

LOLOL Good one about the sailboat.

I am always very humble with the fish gods and remind myself that it's just nice to be on the water. You know what though......... it's a hell of a lot of work to pack and unpack all the equipment. Wash everything off and re-store everything in it's place. I have caught thousands of fish in my lifetime and ,no , I do not need to slaughter them but a fish every so often consistently throughout the day keeps the spirits up. Afterall thats what I am out there to do.
