Sooke 2013 Fishing Reports

English, yes it is location. An Otter Point report doesn't mean the fish were everywhere at Otter Point. They often are in one specific area. First thing in the morning you may have to make a complete tack from one end to the other to try and locate where they are. If you don't hit a fish, watch others that may hook up. Where the boats are hitting them (a boat laying sideways dead in the water is the give away) is a good place to concentrate on. The other charter guys will hone in on that spot as well. Unless you see fish caught somewhere else....just pound that spot. Eventually you may have to wonder again if the spot dries up. I think most guys get bored with sticking and staying to make it pay. But often that strategy does pay off.
If you are on the spot where fish are being caught and your rods are silent and you know your gear is working...you likely have the wrong depth....move the rods up and down while the bite is on to find them.

A great day fishing yesterday from 12-4pm at Otter, with 3 springs & 2 pinks for the smoker. Largest Spring 32lb on a purple haze teaser/flasher setup which preformed better that green this time. I can't wait to get back in the water. Fishing in sooke is just on fire at the moment.

We worked it pretty hard at Aldridge yesterday, had 2 spring on but lost there, and went over the same spot again and again, but nothing after those first 2. Tried depths, lure changes, speeds, everything. Saw a few other boats with fish on around the same area, but it seemed to pretty much dry up. So points taken Pro and English. Stalker, I think you're right too - we can discuss and read, but actually testing, that's when the real learning sticks. So we've put in the hours of late, and I hope you do too over your vacation! Man, work just keeps getting in the way!

I'm planning on doing some fishing in Sooke over the next few weeks. Where can I buy fuel on the water in Sooke without having to run to the east end of Sooke basin?

Thanks
Stosh

As far as I know Sunny Shores is all there is for on water refueling.

Sunny Shores or a couple Jerry cans filled at the in town gas stations.

Slower this morning unless you arrived on the spot in the early morning darkness. Hit a 23 mid morning at Otter then limited out up at Muir in early afternoon. Released a couple of springs on the first pass then started to think I might regret that move. We had lots of good springs in the afternoon pop us off the rigger, start a run and then slip off. I would guess a bunch of male springs have arrived. Aggression bites instead of feeding bites.

Fished 630-8 before work. Got my first spring from a kayak!!!!! Not a huge one but a good 10 pound eating fish. Just happy I landed one!!!! Can't count how many I lost, really hard landing one of these guys from a kayak. Now the search to land a big boy!!!!

Big Wave Dave is best bet. You get prediction plus web cam to show you what is really happening. You can check for fog before heading out.

Please excuse a momentary plug....Dave of Big Wave fame runs his site on sponsors and donations. He has to pay for the wind model access, as well as all the weather stations and webcams. There are regularly fundraising drives to raise funds and ensure the site keeps running.

Here's the donations page: http://www.bigwavedave.ca/donate.php

Most of the names on there are windsurfers and kiters, but there's always lots of conversation on the forums there about all the "Guests" online at any given time.....probably lots of anglers dropping in briefly for a fishing report.

If you rely on the site and it has served you well, drop him a few bucks on paypal or send him a cheque....even $5 or $10 helps.

And now back to your regularly scheduled programming...

Out with Masterbaiter today, stayed in Becher Bay out of the fog and wind. Hit one 18.5 white spring at 7am, then a few pinks, then nothing from 10-2. Lots of boats in the bay, but looks like things have slowed down the last couple days. Saw a couple fish caught around noon when the current started flooding in the bay, but that bite was short lived.

We also stayed off ALderidge to stay out of the crap from the heavy edd and west wind. Landed two teenagers, had a few poop off, landed 4 coho of which 3 were hatchery and kept two pinks for the smoker. Not a bad day.

Congrats , You had lot of fun..you got lot of fish. I want to catch more than one spring a day. I am still work on it and figured it out.

Another great day up west by our self. Five springs up to 23 pounds (3 whites). Lost more than we caught, a couple in the 20's at the boat. Wish the fog, wind and November like chill would back off and give us some more summer on the water.

Wow something to aspire to indeed! Problem is we have had so much wind and fog we have not been able to get out west since that great day in June. (I do not have radar or special reflector). Which brings me to your second point Profisher....

I thought maybe it was just me but I am sure we have had way more wind and fog in July than we normally get and it seems like it is continuing. Sure August is often foggy but not usually with a high wind and lumpy seas as well. Normally foggy weather is flat calm and dead quiet. Seems we are getting a weird summer this year though if you are not on the water in the cold fog it has been plenty sunny enough!!

I hear you, getting out on my days available has been a real challenge with higher winds and wave levels more often than not for my smaller boat which come to think of it hasn't been out west of Secretary yet.

Great day for sure Landed 8 !!!!!!15 to 23 lb 2 whites and got a 12 lb hatch coho as well. aint telling you where I was...LOL
I will say Sooke is and has been very consistent fishing seems pinks have subsided a bit im sure we will get another wave!!!and take a kid fishing!!

English...it has been even worse up the north end of the Island (Estavan) When I was in Nootka a few weeks ago we had offshore wind a steady 30 gusting to 43. We made it out 10 miles heading to the 14 mile spot for hali's but decided it was just going to be to ugly and turned back. Wish I had thought to turn on my mast mounted Go-Pro and turned it towards the bow to show how nasty it was.
