Sooke 2013 Fishing Reports

Great action today.
6 springs with 26 and 21 the biggest. Lost 2 and released 1 other.
Released a wild coho.
Kept 5 pinks for the smoker.
Springs were scrappy!

Tips

Out yesterday with a few forum members. Me, Karma Kazi, Lipripper, and Sammyslabber as our "captain". We fished the bay from 7-2 inside the bay. Boated 5 springs. We never weighed any so I won't quote numbers. 1 large(white), 3 medium, 1 small. I also kept 2 pinks for the smoker. The other guys didn't even want to touch the pinks but I like to smoke them, so they got the lumber. We lost a couple and released a few. All on bait between 50-90'. Good stories, good laughs, good weather, good fishing, good times. Thanks boys!

Here's Sammy and KK with the large white.

I was down in Sooke sunday and the fishing was fantastic, landed 4 spring a hatchery coho 7 pink and even a sockeye and released about a dozen fish.I come down from Nanaimo and that was only my second time fishing there. My boat is only 16 feet so I was curious if the fog is there every day? and what do the locals use for the weather reports. I went by big wave dave to decide to give it a go down there based on his wind predictions.I would like to come down again real soon to get into that fun action again, thanks.

Nice work fellas, making it real tough to bring the boat back to the mainland yesterday. Caught the 9 am ferry got the boat back in by noon and fished west van until late. Think the wife boy and myself have a serious addiction. Wishing I was still in sooke lol.

Big Wave Dave is best bet. You get prediction plus web cam to show you what is really happening. You can check for fog before heading out.
But be prepared for fog in Fogust as it can roll in.

Left the dock on Sunday morning in thick fog, boat already in the water on the dock in front of me comes over... looks at my dash and says "you have gps? Mind if we follow you out?"
Not sure what he was planning on doing once he got out there. Not a good idea.
Water was real sloppy heading out and even with GPS the fog and rough water was very disorientating.

Be safe out there. Fishings fun but not worth puting your self on the line for.

Tips

Was out Sunday from 7:30-1:00, fished between Otter and Muir - quiet for the 1st couple hours then it went nuts. Limited out on Springs - 21,18,16,other 3 were 10-14 range. Let got a number springs in the 3-8pounder range. Kept 2 pinks at 8 and 10 pounds, but I didnt hit many of them.
Craziest part was that I lost the 1st 3 big springs that were on for various reasons, and got a bit depressed since the 2 guys with me were pretty near 1st timers, then we didnt lose another fish. 45-69 depth. Anchovie. Teaser head didnt matter. So much fun out there!

Wow, what a difference 24 hours can make! With all the fantastic long week-end reports I felt sure we would get something today. However fished from 8:30 till 1:30 and did not get a touch. Not even a pink!

Tried the trap for the first 2.5 hours, then drifted with tide down towards Beechy and tried there for an hour, then picked up and ran west of Secretary and fished out front for last 90 minutes. NADA

I suppose this is what one can expect after a long Derby week-end. Every last fish in the vicinity has been caught. Or maybe there are still some clever ones but they were too clever for us!! LOL

Bit lumpy in places especially down near Beechy and off Posession and fog never lifted off the Strait all day.

dont feel too bad englishman you wernt alone today .wife and I fished from 7am to 12 noon about the same places you were and managed only 1 small pink --didnt like the fog or the lumps either not a good day..........

Major bite most of day yesterday and then a little picky today. Seen it may times before. We managed 4 springs but had to find them and grind it out. Lost 1 to the boat that would have topped 30 pounds too. We were done by noon, maybe better on the afternoon flood today?

WASNT to bad in the afternoon but like Rollie said major bite till about 9 then picky got a double header and landed both ....first thing then a few more decided to toss back a few teeners as didnt want it to end only to bite me in the butt!!! LOL but the afternoon topped us up.
NO all fish were not caught in the derby yesterday and today confirmed that....

Good luck Wolf

Hey EM, I feel your pain, and plan on going back through some of the "archives" to see what I'm still doing wrong. Only 3 springs on the lines in the last 2 days of trying, a few pinks, and only one smallish Spring in the boat. Painful to see all these beautiful big spring at the marinas, and not in my boat! Fortunately, we have an awesome hali from a few days back to console ourselves! :D

Fished the last three days in Sooke. Sunday we only managed pinks. Monday we caught the early bite (6-8am) at possesion and got into five nice fish but, due to technical errors on my part, we only boated two mid sized fish, one was a white. Two for three today on a later (7:30ish) and more sporadic bite. Both medium sized hatchery fish. It is definitely fogust!

Yep, there are some fish still there, but only the clever ones. You can catch those Wolf, but us lesser mortals not so much!!! LOL;)

Anyway, I see from the posts I wasn't the only one to strike out. Like real estate, I expect it is location, location, location and 'ah reckon 'ah don't got that bit yet.:D

Good idea to look at the "archives" Adler. I myself have gleaned a huge amount of valuable information off this forum. Several of the guys have also been incredibly helpful and encouraging via PM's as well. I have also been taken out with a couple of the local experts too.

It is a long slow learning curve but it is getting better for me. I believe it ultimately comes down to location (in three dimensions of course). You have to be at the right location at the right depth or nothing works, however good your lures or ideal the "roll" of the anchovy. After 4 years I am just beginning to understand Sheringham and the Trap a little. Still got a ways to go of course as today's unsuccessful attempt attests!

Some places I still don't understand at all. Otter remains completely mysterious and inscrutable for example. I cannot make anything work there. However, I figure it is best not to spread my self too thin. Better to get to know one or two spots well rather than skim the surface at dozens of places "hither and yon" so to speak.

Tight lines!

I think you can only read so much. Most people dont say diddly. Its time on the water. I am dying to get out there and test my theory's on places depths.. there is such a short window in a day to try it. English dont you live in sooke!? omg I would kill for a the next 2 weeks off to just fish. I read when I cant be out there. Read ooold ****. I see threads guys have actually gone back and erased there post giving lures depths etc lol. Sooke bites times is what im curious about right now. Any one care to help me out!!??:D give me a pm!! I will trade blackberry jam for info!
