Setting up Bauer prawn traps- poly rope?

18 inch loops will work. Just big enough to pass the whole coil of the 150 foot piece through the loop. Put some red or yellow electrical tape 10 feet up to warn you the join us coming. You might have to muscle it past the Scotty puller but probably not.
Some people pull the whole works by hand so to get the splice past the puller is no big deal.
I wouldn't tape over the join. PITA to undo.

Hi all, I've really appreciated all the tips here. I am similarly getting geared up for this Spring!

Am I correct in understanding this as your setup? (I will use a 5# weight to hold my traps down since thats what I have!) Plus weights in each trap (not shown)prawn trap.png

Calling all prawnstars! I’m taking the kiddos for a trip up around Quadra and Cortes in mid august so looking to buy my first string of prawn traps.

I’ve settled on 18” Bauers for simplicity sake. Had a glance at his website, and priced a package from PNT ($400 for 2 traps, clips, line etc). Just want to get some perspective before pulling trigger.

Line- last month a fella in HC was telling me to run floating poly line for the bulk of the bottom end and only a short (100’) section of leaded line near the float or even just clip on a line weight. He said less chance of snagging the rope on bottom. Also lighter for the puller (I have an ace). PNT 5/16 3 strand poly rope is quite a bit cheaper (1/3 the price) than leaded line. Any cons to poly? I assume a pound or 2 line weight is easier than trying to spice?

I will run a weight infront if the traps to minimize float movement.

I assume I should anlso add the 5lb weight to the trap (pancake that fits in the Center compartment).

Also assume the 1/2L Scotty bait jar is big enough?

Thanks!

Your diagram is correct. Poly rope > lead rope.

Yep, nailed it. I used a couple wraps of electrical tape to mark locations (rope spacing) where I attached the traps and weight with quick clips.
Also these totes from Lee valley work great for coiling the rope (I think that was also a recommendation from Sly).
Last but not least, this is a pretty decent video talking about prawning around Van and illustrating deployment (guides guide on YouTube)-

PNT had the best pricing on line as well (even better if you get the crew member discount).

Beautiful!
I have a big tub already!
@sly_karma Where do you put the lead rope then in the diagram?
I thought maybe you could just use poly the whole way from float to traps?
I have an old coil of lead line already but it is SUCH a pain to keep from getting tangled and SO HEAVY to pull by hand!

I've been using 400' of this kind of poly. 100' of weighted rope is already spliced in. Easy peasy.

This is what I use.
The purpose of the lead top shot is to sink the line so the bozo trying to set on top of your gear does not run into your floating poly thereby losing your traps.

Pretty sure he meant poly is superior to leaded line. Don’t worry about splicing, just run poly the whole way with a 1lb line weight.

I found the same thing. I went to poly rope for everything. Clip a 1 lb weight on the line 50-100 ft from the surface to keep excess line from floating up and becoming a hazard to boats.
