I was just adding a post to the Blue-back fishery and it brought back memories of fishing Cohos in the early season at Middlenatch Island (off Campbell River.) This Island is a bird sanctuary and loaded with all kinds of interesting wildlife. In particular, it was loaded with seals. They were everywhere.
We fished this Island very close to the shore and were always able to provide guests with great shows of seals and the occasional sea lion. We also were always able to provide excellent salmon fishing. We would take limits of salmon right in front of these dozens of seals without concern.
I might be able to recall 1 salmon lost to these beasts at Middlenatch. The seals are very much like your dog. They know when a salmon is on a hook, and know when to stay away. They also have a relatively high natural diet of non-salmonid species including herring and cod fish. Their natural consumption of salmon is actually very low.
I beleive what is happening now is that they are starved. The cod stocks are at an all time low (overfished.) The herring stocks are at an all time low (overfished.) All of their natural food resources have been devastated by yours truly. Yes, and you.
I personally have little sympothy for the seals and would be quite happy to see the river raiders killed in favor of our salmon and steelhead stocks. But, lets not blame them for our greed. They did not create this imbalance. We now loose perhaps 1 in 3 salmon to seals in Victoria. Ask any of the old timers, this was not a problem going back 20 years. Maybe its time to rebuild all of the stocks so the seals can eat.
