Renfrew Coho Derby Oct. 5 weekend

Sounds like Renfrew was quite slow over the weekend with very few nice fish. I heard a rumour that the only good fish (one pushing 20) was brought in by a volunteer at the hatchery. Either that's great karma or it pays to have close access to a pool of large coho.

That is just a rumour though.

Did anyone do better then a handful of fish under 10 pounds? I missed this year but thought it would have been on fire up in renfrew. Held the derby one week too late perhaps.

We only fished the Saturday, and it seemed quite slow. We managed 5 in the boat, all under 10lbs, and a few others lost. I was often fishing by other boats and didn't see much action at all going on. I did the trip with two other boats, one got skunked with only one hit and the other had 5 as well - also small fish.

I would think all the rain we received through September had the fish going up the river a bit earlier; last year it was dry for awhile and there seemed to be more fish around in last year's derby.

Sounds like a bitter hater rumor to me.

seems strange the derby was such a dud, Hatchery reports coho over 30lbs through the fence - but maybe the rain sent them all up river to do their thing.

oh I'm sure there's some wishful thinking going on but my point was 19lbs aint that big for that run of coho.

Here's the quote:

" Hatchery staff at the blocking fence report quite a few Coho in the 20 pound range and have estimated a couple in the low 30′s! There are lots of fish in the river system and still lots to come."

We managed to pick up 7 cohos this weekend ,
All the fish were 6-8 lbs. Very few fish at the dock over ten pounds. I was catching larger cohos over a month ago in sooke. Most people thought the fish went up with the large rains in the last couple weeks.

Oh well was still fun... can't always kill em that's fishing.

Haha I know I wasn't even there so no hate from me. Just stirring the pot!

The nature of that derby there's rumours every year that the winning fish comes from the river. I've fished the San Juan and pulled big silver cohos - bigger then anything I've hooked into in the salt. Just got to hope everyone plays nice no different then any other derby. We fish for the fun not the money anyways right?

Same with my boat jffisher, we fished friday for a bit in the late afternoon and got one fish, Sat we got 6 fish, and 3 on Sunday, but yes all 6-8 lbs cookie cutters. I saw 2 fish netted out there all weekend and we were all over trying to find some bigger one's but they were not there. I did not talk to anyone or see a fish at the marina bigger than 8 lbs. Sounds like Tsquared got into quite a few, i think his post said over 20 fish, were any of them bigger than 8 lbs. Tsquared? Sure was lots of shakers, never seen that many of them in the derby before. Had to check lines quite often as you would not even know they were there. We had a great place in town that fit the 6 of us very comfortably, watched the Lions get kicked on Friday night and the Canuck game on Sat. night. - Good time for sure! Congrats to the guy that found the big one.

Bag Juan I think my fishing partners got 1 about 12 lbs on Friday. I was at work mores the pity but the rest of the weekend we had the cookie cutters. Ditto on all the shakers--never seen that on the derby weekend.
It was a great weekend tho--good for the mental health after a very busy month at work.

Oh yah i almost forgot about the shakers .Lol... they made you paranoid of leaving your rod down for more than 10 minutes. Regardless i love Port renfrew and will be back next summer for some summer chinook again.
