Reel Maintenance

I fish for halibut about 30 days per year and I am already on my 3rd reel in the last 3 years. I don't maintain them so that is probably why. I am concerned that if I take them apart to clean and re-gease them, I will end up with a bunch of extra parts on my hands. Any suggestions would be appreciated as to how to regularly maintain Okuma level wind reels?

you can go online, probably to their website, and get the diagrams of the reels showing all the parts and assembly. you can also do a search and lots of places will have uploaded videos online, check youtube, of people showing you how to clean reels.

Cmon jim 30 days !!!I dont even guide that many days for hali LOL LOL
I tried okuma and found them to be crap have had penns now for so many years and just keep them lubed and they are still smooth as ever,if you are fishing that much buy better take them in to get fixed.

Good luck Wolf

I've got a Shimano TLD 20 Level Wind and it's the best halibut reel I've ever had. If you need maintenance take it into old Bill at Island Outfitters, he is good and pretty cheap too.

Bill at Island Outfitters are you sure sent 4 okumas in and get 2 back which still don't work.Just jokin thats not Bills fault he sends them in to Mikes reel repaires in Van.The work Bill does is alright.

Okumas aren't great reels if you want long lasting go with penn or shimano.

I approach it a little differently if my reel piles up or has the least bit of problems it's a great excuse to the old lady to buy another. (example: honey look at this piece of s*%# and can you believe I only got it a year ago). If done right you may even recieve a new one for father's day or something. LOL

I love it , one mans problem is another mans lever for better , gotta love a site which offers up great alternatives !!!!

Seems like lever drag is preferred over star drag...
any particular reason, maybe less parts to break down ?

There's way more braking power with the lever drag. The drag disk are alot smaller on a star drag.

I personally like with a lever drag once you set it with the micro,I then set it on the "strike button" and if I need more drag just push it forward but it is the same every time out no need to re adjust.
What i really like as well when putting gear down you can adjust how fast or slow you want to send your gear down.

Like I said earlier 5 years on one reel(gld 3) and now 3 years with the other ones have tried many these are far the best so far very smooth close second would be the TLD-20 but found the penns less money and better. I really like the bigger handle too have to get my big paws on them LOL.

GLG great post on that reel but thats what I call one bad looking reel LOL.

I always after every trip spray down the rods and reels first with fresh water and let em dry in the holders, while I clean up boat and put back gear etc and the last thing I do is put the reels away so by then there nice and dry. about every 2 weeks or so I also wipe them down with corrosion block just to put a protective film on them.

Good luck Wolf
