prawning

Best time is just after they lift the closure

Sucked today out there. 3 traps all full of squat lobsters. What the hell! How do I avoid them? Was in 240-250'. Not one prawn. Oh well at least the sun was out and the new boat felt great.

Dave, thats too deep for the saanich inlet if thats where your prawning from my experience, if your getting squat lobsters you know your too deep. Try a little shallower. 20 feet can make a difference. I know up island they prawn deeper but i've never had luck around 250 feet in the inlet. I usualy go 180 to 220 try try again. :)

Thanks for this info. I was in the inlet. Will go shallower next time.

The best indicators are the little creatures people call squat lobsters. If you get more of these than prawns you are too deep. Start at 200 feet, bremember tides. Get some purple stocking material and throw in your old anchovies.

Got almost 500 out there on saturday. We fished 10 traps 2 per string and did two pulls between 10:30 and 5pm. Only a couple traps had 0 prawns in them and each string had at least 1 trap with about 10ish. Our first set was better than the 2nd but it also soaked longer.

We fished 280-240 dave your depths sound spot on as far as I am concerned.

Striped prawns are around 200, spotted around 350.

Yea, did them in butter and garlic. Very tasty. But, in the end I can think of a hundred less intensive ways to make meal. Found sharp scissors worked best to cut the shell. They are so small it takes a lot of them.

i use squats for garnishes, they look kinda cool on a plate.

Went out again today up in the inlet today. Did better than last time. Thanks for the tips guys. Not one squat!! Also cruised around in the boat a bit. It was crazy how many seals, sea lions and jumping chum there were around Wain Rock, Hatch Point, Cherry Point areas. At least I was told they were chum by some guys trolling for them. Saw lots of seals shredding salmon on the surface.

How many of you were there on board?
You're allowed 4 traps per fisher and the daily limit per person is 200 pieces. Going back to your original post, if you had 10 traps down, you would have required a minimum of 3 fishers on board.

Since you did better this time, then I assume you had 3 or more people on board?

HUH? 10 traps? That'd make for some sore arms. Think your mistaken bud.

3 traps down, just me and my girl. Did better meaning we actually got prawns this time. Never have I hit my limit of 200 per person. Thanks for keeping me honest.

FM that was Jockey, LOL

That was me with the 10 traps and don't worry we did have 3 people. Would have fished 12 traps if we had that many! I was surprised they are not too bad to pull I was thinking one trip out and I would be wanting a prawn puller but the second set I pulled all 5 strings myself and it was only a two day recovery. lol

Glad you got some prawns Dave they are out there.
