Prawning the Addiction continues..

Not asking for a location, but I want to take my father in law out this year around Port Hardy for Prawns...don't see many people talking prawns in that area, and I am wondering if there is prawns in the Port Hardy area. He can't go too far, but he used to enjoy it a lot. Anyone had any experience there?

yup 24x 24 Bauer are the best.. I have pulled 350 between the two in a 1.5 hour soak... well worth the extra few bucks for initial investment....

you bet jeff.well worth it.that was a 4 hour soak

Without a doubt , i am totally hooked on prawning.. A quick visit to Ace line haulers this morning to have them install a hands free kit to my Brutus line hauler, Then off to HC for another Bauer 24x24 inch prawn trap. I am going to buy 2 more stackable round traps and try and see once and for all which trap out fishes the other, but i thinks from what i have seen so far the Bauer traps compete quite well. :)

do they fish commercialy for prawns near you ,because the season opened today

You can make those traps as well. The cool thing about making your own you can build custom sizes... I buy my supplies in Nanaimo. Hog rings, aqua mesh material etc.. I buy all my rope/supplies up there as well....http://www.aquapacificwire.com/

Cost wise I think I save about 60%, and don't cry if I lose one.

so why would Bauers be better?? Is there more escapement from a round stackable trap?? I,ve often noticed if I,m slow on the retrieve (hand pulling), a couple of prawns are shooting out the doors. Are more prawns escaping from round stackable traps?
Also I notice the mesh size is smaller on a Bauer trap. Are you bringing more undersized prawns up to the boat with a Bauer??.... because with my round stackable they are squeezing out the netting and self releasing?

Good question. I to have the round stackable traps and have been happy with them especially the stacking part that saves room on the boat. These are the same traps that the commerical guys use so there must be a reason? Is it just because they stack. Has anybody fished both traps and really noticed a way bigger differance between the two?

I sold 2 Bauer traps for just that reason-tooo many small prawns. Most of the commercial guys use a small mesh sock (PNT) for the bait that will stretch from top to bottom.

bauer traps=baby killers. so what if ya 690 in a set,, i would way rather have 50-100 jumbos per set, commercial traps for the win.

We recently introduced one bauer trap to our string of commercial style prawn traps with good results. It catches prawns just like the rest of them. Not sure where you guys are fishing but we only catch jumbos ;).

Yes a great feature of aqua mesh traps is they stack. If you think commercial traps are better than go ahead and use them. But truthfully having used a lot of different ones these style of traps fish just the same... I fail to see any advantage and disadvantage.

I don't run a commercial boat so I don't need huge traps. Most people get them and freak out when they first get them as you usually don't get much first usage ...They need an initial soak to get off the plasticizers in the aqua mesh material. That is why they smell when you first get them. After a soak your golden.

I rarely get small prawns in areas I go so you must be in areas with high numbers of baby prawns.. If you tossed the babys back wouldn't they survive anyway? I know I toss the ones with eggs back. Why wouldn't they survive?

Personally I think why these traps are rejected is a lot of people will not change with are used to..... Tough making a switch if what you use always work... Personally they all work.

I decided to give Prawning a go this year and I had great luck in the Brentwood Bay Area. Went into trotac dropped $800 for the works, I assume we got the Bauer knock off traps, I think they were $60each, they don't have the Bauer tags on them. We had many ups and downs throughout the month, but in the end we got lots of prawns and both our sets of traps back. My first soak with Bauer knock offs we had about 300prawns between 4 traps. Was pretty happy with that, our best soak during the month we had about 500.

I bought some bauer style traps to see what the big deal was. I fished them against my ladners and I am now selling the baures lol.

One mans experience...
