Without a doubt , i am totally hooked on prawning.. A quick visit to Ace line haulers this morning to have them install a hands free kit to my Brutus line hauler, Then off to HC for another Bauer 24x24 inch prawn trap. I am going to buy 2 more stackable round traps and try and see once and for all which trap out fishes the other, but i thinks from what i have seen so far the Bauer traps compete quite well. :)

We have found the Bauer traps outfish the round ones by 3-1 or better. Save your money on the round traps.

Yup.. Out for some prawn action this aft also!! Love the bugs!!

What did you pay for those Bauer traps? I use mostly stainless round but liked the Bauer once and while because they are so light, but I lost my only 2 last year.

The Big Bauer traps have come down a bit in price, 99.99 HC Nanaimo , FA lets see a picture? Im kinda at capacity with my "Fugly "

I purchased 4 Bauer traps this year and love prawning with em
with the weather turning nice and a little warmer, it's time

cost me 40-45.00 to make one of those traps. hog rings, aqua mesh material etc.... I like making them myself... But you need access to a brake etc.. Bauer price isn't out of hand. I think they charge double that , and that's inline with markup...

Jeff your traps won't fish right until a few soaks....The aqua mesh material plastic material need to be seasoned...Trust me you'll see. My guess is there is plasticizer or something that prawns can smell...You will get a few but not as many when you start out...

ahhh you guys are killin me! nice work! i think I'm just going to have to hand line it. I can't stand another season with no prawns.

dont hand line .. use a scotchman and ring, pull em like an anchor system, did this for this twenty years of bug chasing.

Get a good sized galvanized ring, I use a 3" ID.
Seize it onto a good sized scotchman, those large orange poly ones, I use a Polyform A-5. (They look like a person of Scottish decent that has drunk too much and is floating around in the chuck with a red face)

When you want to pull your trap or anchor line, place rode through the ring, tie free end of the rode to the boat and drive away.
The resistance/drag of the scotchman will pull your trap/anchor up.

I use this for halibut anchoring, be careful if using it for prawn traps as the ring could knock off your trap if it is clipped on.
Real slick system once you have figured out how to personalize for your equipment.

And what stops the traps from going back down when you turn around to get them. Need chain to counter the weight of the traps? Use a cam locking device? Better off biting the bullet and getting a puller.

I put a single knot in my line and large stopper knot in it.. I used a snatchblock, the small knot would slip through they pulley but not go past the stopper.. And the groundline would not slide back down because the first single knot was enough to stop it from sliding back.. Hope this helps..

Be carefull using the bouy and ring method if you are in rough rocky bottom. Back when I was doing that, 2 different traps in one day got hung up on the bottom and they were totally mangled when they got to the top. The next day I went and bought an electric puller!
