Not much posted, cause the fishin has been so awesome!! Charter boats are still out the Caution, Indian Cove, Raioner and Bremner, limiting out on Springs....Hit the other side too, Roller bay, Secretary point, Mexicana, etc. And don't forget Duval pt, 60 ft with a green Hootchie
 
Quite frankly, the guides should not be concerned about pumping the fishery and none of the locations mentioned are secrets. Like Serengehti said, the numbers have been reasonable for springs and butts, but not red hot. The coho fishing is another matter!!!!

Overall visitors to Port Hardy are down from last year. Businesses are closing (Quatse campground was half empty when we were there a couple of weeks ago) so a little "honest" info can help the town through rough times. The fish belong to all Canadians, not just to a select few.... off the soapbox now.

I would have to agree with Cuba Libre.Wasn't impressed with the local fishermen[guides]etc.We asked around the docks where we might try..all we got were blank looks...nice!They can have Port Hellhole all to themselves....I'm a disappointed CANADIAN[V] I'll never be back.
 
Fortunately, I stayed at Quatse Campground overnight for a reasonable price before. good services. You saying that Overall vistors to PH are down from last year. I think it has something to do with difficult economic times that affect tourism industry on the island.
 
I agree that the main reason for the drop in visitors is the recession that all towns are affected by. My point was that guiding services, which are an important part of the summer economy, can do a lot to help the community by attracting visitors. More closed stores hurts everyone. They dont have to give exact locations to new anglers, but general directions and honest reports on how the fishing is, is much appreciated by new visiting anglers.
Those of us that have fished the area for years can usually find out by knowing who to ask. But what harm would there have been to tell fishspoon that Castle has been steady for a few weeks??? Or even that Duval and into the top of the Bay are worth a look at first??

Hey Wildwest, dont take it so hard. Next time ask the guys at the gas dock at Bear Cove. I have found them to be really helpful. Port Hardy is worth more than one trip--honest!!;)

I would have told you that Castle Point was great for Coho and the odd Spring. We caught Coho there one day with spoons, hootchies and bait, couldn't keep them off the line. We could only keep two so we quite fishing. Duval had too many shakers, so we quite fishing there. We tried the Mastermans but again, too many shakers. Castle Point was the only place the produced for us. We also had success for Halibut in the Castle Point area in 250 to 300 feet of water. Two chickens and a barn door. We talked to one guide on the docks and he was helpful, he went to Bremner for big springs and Halibut (another barn door, mine was bigger!) I go every year, next year up past Cape Caution. It is worth it.

I would have to think that a guide should keep his mouth shut when confronted about exact locations, but if he gives a few of his not so Hot or favorite spots that is fine. I wanted to know more about the port hardy area so i booked a charter, and before i booked i made sure the guide was going to be willing to show me some of the areas i could access with my 18 foot boat. He was more then willing to show us around and even more spots on the GPS. Chad from coastwidesportsfishing.com is a great guy. I would recomend him to anyone looking into the Port Hardy area.

So, are there no regular updates on the Pt. Hardy area?....want to keep an eye on the action and time it with a trip. Doesn't seem to be regular reports on where the fish are but maybe I am looking at the wrong section....any other area to find pt. hardy reports.

Thanks for the post Big Joe. I'm not sure what's up with guys like Richmake but that kind of attitude is what gives guides a bad name. Being helpful is what attracts customers not cloak and dagger stuff.
 
I've got to agree about attitudes here. I find any topic that includes Port Hardy in the name is a place to be very careful what you might say. Mention a fishing spot by name or even give a less than complimentary fishing report (even if it is accurate) and you will be shot down quicker than you can say Duval Point. Sure would be nice to find a forum for people who want to talk "fishing" for a change.
 
Don't make me dig the picture of the feared Port Hardy Codfather sheep from the archives. I thought we'd put this all behind us and moved on. :D:D:D
 
maybe you can pm if you don't want to discuss it on here...but why have the people from codfather and pt. hardy been complaining about realistic fishing reports on pt. hardy and locations?

just wondering if I should be going to hardy or mcneill this summer....maybe mcneill it is

I think the locals would be more receptive to giving better info if some of the tourists would practice some better fish ettiquit. When comming to a new spot maybee sit back for a minute and see how the tac is done, get an idea of the speed the locals, who know , are fishing so we arent running over each other. Use the simple rule of right side to the beach, so your not going against the flow, be aware of the boats around you and pull out when u see the guy infront of u has a fish, dont short tac the glory spot all day, take your turn, and everybody will treat u good. Its not that the locals dont want other here, its more that some tourists make it difficult to fish some areas. Some places that can only really fish 10-12 boats, will be cut down to 5 with just one boat screwing it up!!!

I am excited to here that someone here for their first time hooked into a huge fish ...... but if its at the expese of 10 other boats having a frustrating day because of their tactics .. dont be expecting any high fives when u get back to the dock!!!!!
 
I totally agree with practicing good etiquette while fishing. I also agree that people new to the area are quite often to blame...but, without mentioning names, I can't tell you how many times I've just about been crowded into the rocks by one of the local charter boats (often referred to as SHEEP) trying to "cheat" the pattern.
