Port Hardy

Just have to get my .25 in here. Yes, there are rude idiots out there but there are locals that dont give a damn if you are playing a fish too. I have been crowded by both locals AND tourists. Sometimes , its unintentional, like when a the tide surges and pushes a boat sideways. Other times--- well, lets just say I have been more than a litte POed the odd time. But frankly, I have NEVER had a problem with any of the guides on the water at Port Hardy.

At times problems arise when the fishing gets hot seemingly in only one area. The herd instinct can take over. Thats when I move. Its a big ocean. totally agree with phnapa about what he said about courtesy on the water and not hogging the hot area. And as been said before there comes a point when an area just CANT handle any more boats. If an angler tries to work his way in, he can ruin it for those already fishing. LEAVE! BTW-- the "sheep" reference which has been beaten to death refers to anglers that follow charter boats to the area where they are fishing... nuff said on that one. :D

But I have to admit, getting into "combat" fishing during the fall chum run is a hoot. Thats because everyone knows there are going to be tangles and its part of the deal. But PULEEZE, not at Hardy:D

I agree with phnapa about practicing proper etiquette. However I don't think that would make any difference in the quality of fishing reports out of Hardy.

If you look at one of the Hardy guiding outfits webistes under fishing reports all you get is a bunch of fish pictures or posts that recomend going to Duval. If you don't give fishing reports take it off your site, let's not pretend.

I lived in Hardy for quite a number of years and I know the attitude. What tears at them is the need for the tourists but also the fact they don't want them. Therein lies the conflict.

I am thinking it has been pretty good up here this summer. The traffic is down there are a bunch of fish here. Not hearing that many complaints from on the water. Whether you fish local or not everywhere seems to be holding some fish. Had guest last night that fished Duval for about two hours after launching their boat and picked up a 28 abd a 32 plus to fat coho.

Planning on coming up to the Hardy area the end of the month. Want to hire a guide on our 50 footer to show us some Hali and Spring areas to fish. Anyone know of a guide that would be into this sort of thing? Will pay a fair rate for 5 or so hours for his time on our boat.

BigHog-- A 50fter is not suitable for many of the better areas at Port Hardy. Fishing there involves fishing walls, kelp patch edges, and some areas with significant tide rips. Further, if you try to fit a 50ft boat in the most popular areas, you are not going to be warmly accepted.

Do you have a skiff you could use-- much better option for fiahing.

Are there areas that you can fish from your boat... sure.Afterall there are numerous commercial tacs in the area. Gordon Channel, Taylor Shoals, Round Island and the Airport come to mind where you can fish without POing the smaller boats. Even up Goletas on the eastern shore above Duval will work. But be aware that I have found a couple of rocks the hard way that were NOT on my Navionics chart.

Why not spend the coin and hire a guide and boat?? Makes a lot of sense to do so.

I understant the boat is fairly big for some areas but there must be quite a few areas that this boat can fish. It's a big ocean and as far as I know there are no restrictions for 50 footers to fish where the 20 footers fish. Again just looking for a guide to show us the local ropes on our boat for 5 or so hours. If interested let me know and we can discuss price. We have the bulk of gear required but are more than willing to pickup whatever Hali gear is needed.

thanks

Absolutely right

Reminds me of a jacka## in a 70 fter at beal last year thinking he owned the place and trolling through the crowd against the pattern. Boats had to constantly get out of his way. Would be hard to fish a 50 in a popular area.

Hey Kelly, you hit the nail right on the head. This is the EXACT reason why a guide is wanted so that there NO issues while fishing in these areas.

I'm wondering if there is anywhere close to the Quarterdeck to get bulk ice (salt ice would be preferred) just in case we catch any fish next week? Any updates on recent fishing?

If the plant the other side of the airplane float is not too busy, you might be able to get ice at $10/cooler.

unfortunately a few people demanding service for a cooler of ice, when theese guys usually sell it by the ton, have put a bit of a halt to sportys getting ice from the commercial plants.

also the hardy boys is close to the quarterdeck you'll be paying a bit more but good brine ice there, their set up for sportys

Well, it is a big ocean, but your boat does take up a lot of it, especially in a small cove. I have fished with and on 50's, to include my own! Mine wouldn't troll down slow enough (even on one engine), unless I used a spoiler? And there is only two ways I know of doing that. One is a disconnect/reducer at the transmissions and the other is called a "sea" anchor. I used my sea anchor when I trolled, and I did stay away from the smaller boats and also trolled quite away off the shoreline, not to interfere. I found it not an effective way to troll for salmon. Mooching off it worked better, but again I don't think you should try to intermingle with smaller boats, unless you have a large area to maneuver, which there are some. I have done it without problems. But again… I did NOT take it in a small cove with other boats, even when mooching.

What I ended up doing was rigging my dingy (as most people who have 50 foot boats do) to fish. I would anchor in a nearby cove, then fish off the dingy, worked great. That even kept my wife happy as she could relax on the big boat while I fished on the dingy! :)

There are several areas you can fish, without causing anyone any problems. Have you trolled with it before?

You really don't need a guide, do you? You might have a problem getting a local guide to jump on a 50 footer and fish it close to the rocks? Salmon fishing, is salmon fishing and halibut fishing, is halibut fishing. Stop at the fuel dock and top your tanks off, they usually have a chart and will tell you where the hot spots are and probably will have the favorite local lure? I have never NOT got information from a fuel dock! If you want I can even send you the lat/lon to them, as I have most of the areas already plotted and in my CPU? Let me know if you want them?

Are you running up the inside passage?

We have electronic 715 HP Cats with troll valves and can get down to any speed. We are not wanting to go in small coves just the main areas for Spring and Hali. We have lots of electronic charting so LAT and LONG helps for Hali spots. Not interested in getting in anyones way.

BTW- we are from Vancouver.....

BTW... I really don't care!

If you are a "sport", I will help! But based on your internet website... you are not! And, I guess I need to add, based on the email I got, I do understand what is going on!

You can start with "richmake", Chad & "SerengetiGuide", David, bigjoe, sorry? I don't know you that well?

Okay, you are NOT a guide, you need to talk to them! If you explain what is going on, I think they will be a player... just don't tell'm you want to take a 48' Silverton in a small cove! That what you are really intersted is catching some fish!

How about this... I am very okay with giving up some "halibut" locations, as this really apprears to be someone that won't run in and create any problems... So, I did give up Castle, as a Halibut spot! I am okay with that, based on what I received? :)

But, I think they really do need a guide, to keep them out of trouble! You guys, might want to help here? [?]

Good fishing!
