what a joke , woke up this morning , went to Services Canada to register a boat , Was informed that they no longer
offer this service in BC , after jumping through several hoops , TC informed me that , this is only done back East now , New Brunswick i believe , first filling out the app form ,available online or at a Service Canada office , then mailing it to them , 3 - 4weeks later , maybe even longer they say , i will receive my paper work and license in the mail...

my last boat , i went into Services Canada , had to wait over an hour , EI is also a part of this office , had to wait until the unemployed were helped first , what a disaster joke it was then , even worse now ??

Anyone went through this yet , anyway around it ? if ya buy a boat in say June , you may not be getting ur paper work till half way through the summer , they said it could take longer as we get into prime boating season..

they said it is ILLEGAL to run a un registered boat , hefty fine , possible impound....

Unreal

Recently got mine done. Received license about 2 weeks after I mailed the paperwork. I was surprised that they did not change the E (ontario) number to a BC one. But to hell with it. I have my paperwork and under my current address. They can't nail me if it's their screw up.

ps FD if you didn't get the form, it's online right here>>>>>http://www.tc.gc.ca/wwwdocs/Forms/84-0172E_1007-04_E.pdf

so who would check for this ? transport canada ? DFO ? RCMP ?

I guess I should do it... dont know who the previous owner of my boat is though.

do people actually get asked for this if they are stopped by any of the above ?

The RCMP will do it

do you need to know the previous owner ? my boat already has numbers on the side ? am I going to have problems because it has been registered by someone else (probably expired)

Yes, it's law now that you have your boat licensed.
RCMP can and will check for it.
fines are applicable without it.

You can sign a sworn oath that you are the legal owner of the boat but can't provide a bill of sale or have info on previous owner. It's on the Service Canada site, but I can't get you a link as the site appears to be down.

I mailed my completed form to transfer a boat to my name on Tuesday. Will post as soon as it arrives but the message I was given when I called was to except 4-6 weeks. When I asked what I should do in the interim should I be inspected they had no answer...great.

You have 90 days grace from date of purchase. If you have a dated bill of sale, you should be ok.

Quote from Sevice Canada:
"•Owners of licensed pleasure craft now have up to 90 days from the date of purchase to transfer a pleasure craft licence, during which time you may continue to operate your pleasure craft with the existing licence and a copy of the transfer documents on board."

What about a new boat,I just sent the paperwork away today. So i can't use it till i receive the license. That's bull$hit,i'm gonna call transport canada.

Hate to say I to am waiting for a duplicate copy of my boat Lic.lost I guess! Funny thing is I asked Transport Canada guy @ the boat show in Victoria about the problem he said here fill out this form & send it in but it will take some time to process it he said 'don't worry about it show the cops the info. broch. & tell them your waiting for a replacement".
you think they would be able to figure out who the boat was reg. to eg:14k......& proper I.D
What about boat names does it matter if there is the same name on diff. boats even tho you have redg.your boat with that name?

Ya, that one is touchy, I read some of the "fine print" and came up with this:

......................
Exceptions
Licencing
102. A pleasure craft may be operated without a licence until the day on which the owner of the pleasure craft receives the licence, up to a maximum of 90 days from the day of the initial transfer of ownership to an end user, if
(a) the acknowledgement of receipt of the application for the licence by the Minister is carried on board; and
(b) the file number of the acknowledgement is marked on the pleasure craft in the form and manner specified by the Minister.
