I know some are heading for my smoker.[:p]

They are predominently Fraser fish. Maybe a chunk of Cowichan fish too? Some maybe heading to Pudget Sound. Sacramento and Columbia chinooks travel the outside not the inside.

I would say it would depend on the diversion rate, and this year it looks high to the inside. If someone catches a short 60#'r than we'll know for sure..lol

Basing my comments on the old data from the 1970's and 80's where DFO hired a commercial troller each year to fish off Nanaimo and tag and release them. They found based on the tag returns that these fish stayed in the Nanaimo area for 4 to 6 weeks, then headed north around the island then down the west coast. We see these same fish sometimes in huge numbers off Barkley Sound in late August as they head south. I should also have posted that some of the fish we have caught in the last 2 weeks have no eggs developed whatsoever, so I'm guessing these fish will not spawn until 2010. Regardless of our various theories, you have to admit these fish are not ready to enter the river any time soon, so they will be going somewhere to bulk up over the summer and I'm betting it will not be in this area.

Just so happens I'll be off Barkley Sound in late August too. I Don't doubt the info from the tags, but what's to say the fish don't go around the bottom end of the island to get to Barkley Sound? That might explain why the fishing in sooke is so good sometimes in June/July?

These fish seem big already. How big will they be next year????[8D]

Remember, it's called "fishing," not "catching."

I've noticed their heads are huge, for the size of them. I hope they grow into their heads!!

I'm visiting my parents in Nanaimo for a few days and we're heading out tomorrow. Is it still pretty steady? What's the best time of day? They don't want to get up early and I'm trying to convince them we need to fish all of that morning flood. Much happening in the afternoon?

Thanks,

Dudds

Was out tonight for a few hours and it was DEAD. Nothing doing. Likely better in the morning. Any early morning reports??

We fished 8-130 today with no success. One guy we talked to said he got a 15 at 8 but that was it. Either the flurry is over or we were in the wrong place,

BEAUTIFUL day though!

I agree dead's the new word, back to reality.[V]

More fish showing again, good sign!

i went through on a bc ferry tonight [:o)] around 7:30 and there was 6 or 7 boats fishing - all right around the 5 fingers in tight and close. There was a pod of dolphins 3 or 4 miles south we went by about 2 miles off shore, about 20 of them i would say, if thats a sign of anything[?]

It seems as though the fish have moved on. Been dead for a few days now.

There is still the odd one coming in, but things have died right off. Last 2 times out, 16 hrs of trolling for 1 fish!!! Off to Port, might even hit Sooke for a day or two! I started fishing Sooke in 1974. A lil longer than Profish!

Put in 6 hours yesterday and the gf pulled up a 25 lb er, one spat the hook just after surfacing... not as hot as May, but a few fish being hit on the slack tide if your dialed in, still holding off travelling for fish untill I go 0 for 3 in town here. Anchovy was choice for a couple people yesterday.

hooked a 25lb halibut off galiano, talked to a guy who said a 100lb was hooked last week mid island.
