I know what you mean. I was all jazzed up and then I saw forecast.[}:)]

Remember, it's called "fishing," not "catching."

Don't read into the weather forecasts too heavily for the Nanaimo area. We enjoy many days on the water with some of the worst forecasts in place. There is always somewhere to fish locally, safely. Mason

To be honest with you, just show up at the ramp and then make a decision, one way or the other 7 times out of ten, you'll be fishing! More than likely, you'll be happy with the decision that you've made. Mason

I hope it stays hot. I'm coming over for a few days tomorrow.
I don't know where 5 fingers is, I'll be staying in Silva Bay and seeing where the tide takes me. I hope to get in some awesome catch and release.
By the way things seem to be going this year I hope that everyone has a great summer of fishing!

Oops! I should have read the second page before I posted. [:I]

If you're staying at Silva Bay...I'd just fish Thrasher or the Grande (ask at the marina, they'll tell you where that is). The fishing's been good there as well.

Cheers All,

This might go down as my best day ever in Nanaimo fishing springs! I headed out about lunch (just as the wind was making a mess on the water and the waves were starting to pile up). My charter bombed (again) so, after meeting/chatting with Fishing Assassin and his buddy, I headed out to try my luck.

In 3 hours I landed and released 20 springs with 3 DOUBLE HEADERS! Alone in the boat with the sloppy water, it was a hoot! Never lost one fish all day. Not sure what it will take to remove this smile from my face!

For the details: 2 miles off Fingers in 1000 feet of water. Fishing was so good I was catching into the waves and with them. Down 145' with splatterback hoochie on one and a coyote green/glow on the other.
Today they hit at a bit faster troll...3mph (over ground speed).

Hope this helps...

You are a fish god! How can I get a hold of you? I was lucky to land two in the soup on Wednesday. We were using the exact same lures as you. On average you were catching one fish every nine minutes, that absolutely amazes me. You must be the hot rod for Nanaimo! Mason

Wow, you can retire now, Fishing Guide! :D That's increadible. Thanks for the report. I can only hope that the wind quits so I can come accross. I should have made the trip over last weekend when the water was flat all day.

Cheers

Water is calming down nice tonight, get out if you can!! Myself, I put a slab of wood through the plate that covers my flywheel earlier today, so I have some pop can, and duct tape repairs to make ;)

First time I ever went fishing in Nanaimo we got 5 springs over 20#'s. I think the fishing is about as good now as I've ever seen it (Bamfield and offshore included). Counted 35 boats the last time I was out and everyone was getting fish.

...exactly when the forecast calls a small craft warning. Go figure. ;)

Cheers Fishing Assassin...

Can you give me a call when you have a moment...sorry I lost your phone number. Me bad[V]

If the wind comes up is there any sheltered areas to fish that hold fish . I have a 16 fter . thanx

Cheers KCW

If the wind comes up it depends on the direction as to where you might fish. If it is a Northerly wind you can go 2 miles north of the Fingers and near land is a place called Neck Point. It is sheltered from a Northerly and, if you stay in 200' of water, you will find fish. You can also fish in the 'lee' of the Fingers but that only provides minimial protection.

If the wind comes from a Southerly you can go south of Fingers about 8 miles (past Entrance Island) to the next spit of land. This is known as the Granby and it is well protected from a Southerly wind.

Both are currently holding BIG fish. I won the Nanaimo Kill Fish Derby off the Granby at the end of March and fish it quite extensively during the summer. Bonus is that Silva Bay is only 3 minutes away for meals, fuel or other ammenities.

Hope this helps....

PS As I write this I popped outside and the wind is howling so one must be quite aware of the conditions before entering into any consideration of fishing.

To the North of the Fingers about 5-7 miles is Winchealsea Islands. You can fish around the islands for protection. And you will problably load up as well. I can't see fish being all over and not be there too. Out of all the places to fish in and around nananimo Winchealsea is my personal favorite. It is about the same distance out as where everyone is fishing at the fingers, but the reefs and land masses means that when the fish go by they go through some natural funnels which tend to concentrate them a little bit. I have had some unreal fishing at Winchealsea.
