Unreal fishing in Nanaimo right now. It's like the 70's again!! Fish everywhere. On the News a 40 was taken last evening. We where out this morning, late start (10am) but we got 4, biggest was 28 and a 24 also.

great to hear how good it is on the inside, you boys deserve a few fish after the drought. Are most the fish out in the strait? How far do you need to go to hit em?

We hit ours about 4-5 miles out off the fingers. Lost 1 dandy to a seal out there. I thought jees we are going to get the fish back because theres no rocks for the seal for about 5 miles. So after he came up I headed the boat over to make him dive again, then the line went slackish we reeled it up and all there was was 1/2 of a jawbone and half a face up to the eye socket.


Everyone is hitting fish!

Ah.... I don't think so. They'll open up the commercial trollers before long...and the Natives will get extra fishing time...and before long we'll be back to the early 90's with no fish anywhere. Not good.

Cohoes are extinct for all intensive purposes in Georgia Strait. A DFO expert said we could stop all fishing for all species for 100 years and we would not even be close to the state of affairs we were in 30 years ago...and 30 years ago fish were still everywhere!

Enjoy this fishing while it lasts....it's an anomaly and freak of nature where the stars have aligned and a bunch of springs have come down the inside.

I'll vouch for that....incredible fishing. So much so, I haven't yet moved my boat to Port Alberni. Cheaper on the fuel bill and the fishing is every bit as good as being off shore. YEEEEE HAAAAA

Poppa Swiss, that's an uninformed post. More fish have been hauled out of the ECVI side in the last 2.5 weeks than have been hauled out of Vancouver the whole year. ECVI has much better fishing that Vancouver...most of the year. Particularly what is happening now. Vancouver has really tapered off relative to what it was...and it has quieted down considerably over the last week. A creel survey at a popular marina in the Nanaimo area reported 105 boats surveyed with an average of 3 fish over a 3 day period. 315 Springs from one survey point over 3 days. Hmmm..interesting. Extrapolate that and the true harvest is much bigger.

I'm not pissing on the Nanaimo area fishery.

However, if you want to get into that..I'm sure I can dredge up plenty of pictures and examples of ECVI and WCVI greed from the 60's to the 90's up to the resulting carnage to the sportfishing industry today?

Anyways Poppa Swiss, stop complaining about my post and get out there and get fishing before they move on!

I have to along with F.M. on this. The creel survey guy at MacDonald Beach ramp told me that if the sports keep reporting good catches D.F.O. will use this info along with their magic crystal ball to justify more native and commercial openings. And this will do more damage than global warming and seals and any other thing you want to come up with. Like F.M. says, lets chill and enjoy the fishing.

How deep are you running your riggers and what lures are you using?

I bought some coyote spoons the other day ... have hoochies ... would you run one of each or something else all together.

By the sound of it ... I might finally catch my first salmon in Nanaimo !!!

Get me, I was using a cop car coyote and a nasty boy, anywhere from 110-150 has been great!! I have to work today or else I'd be out there. FM.. jealous much?

When you can go almost a whole season without getting a spring to bite, you are going to take advantage when there are fish around. I know guys here in Nanaimo who have fished for years and never caught anything worthy, now they have an opportunity, and you try to begrudge them it.. funny shi+. Why the hell would you think DFO is going to open for Natives? We don't target springs for FSC, were after Sockeye. I bet if a guy was to fish for 3-4 days right now in Nanaimo he could get all his salmon he needs for the year. That would leave June, July, and August to fish Hali's.

I make the trip accross to Thrasher Rock at least once a year, but the Fingers seems a bit out of my range. I wonder if Thrasher is equally hot. If not, I may need to adjust my gps!

Brechin boat launch right acros the road from the ferry terminal in Departure Bay. The Fingers/Hudson Rock are about a 10 minute run from there.
