Merc 135 Opti max

Need some info please:

I am having some water problems .
Leave the dock and after about 15 minutes I get the 4 beep warning 2 min. later again , may repeat a few times then run for 45 min. to 1 hour and nothing. troll on kicker for 3 to 5 hours and then switch to big motor and run , sometimes motor will run all the way back to dock. Other times may beep every two min. for 6,8,10 times.

I have put in a new racor filter with the drain plug and also replaced the small filter on main motor and still get the beeps every once in awhile.
I have put a half gallon of methal hydrate in on the last fill. Still a few beeps but not as bad.
I run the motor at 4100 rpm. and there is no pause when the beeps happen.
There is minimal water in the Racor bowel, maybe a teaspoon.

The few times my Opti has beeped it was overheating as a result of kelp frauds blocking an intake or crap inside the cooling system. Is your tell tail pissing? If you have a smart meter or temp gage, check the temp. when it is beeping?

You don’t won’t water in your fuel getting past your Racor/water separator as I understand that can lead to injector replacements.

I agree with rockfish, but you can try draining the VST tank there is a drain plug on the front if you are worried about water in the fuel.

Call Stephan at RPM in Tofino he is good at trouble shooting and helping out with intermittent issues on mercs. I have called him numerous times after hours to bypass alarms and other things on my VRod.

When I first got my 135 there was a heat issue that drove me nuts....guy I got the boat from swore up and down everything was redone on the bottom end.
Well his mechanic was an idiot...or he got took.
My son..(Fisher-dude)...got his hands dirty and dropped the bottom of the leg and replaced the burnt and seized impeller...replaced the popitt valve that I had no idea wtf that was until I read up on it...After that fix...water temp has been fine.
Heading to Pedder Bay on sunday so took the boat in for a tune up.
Much to my dismay there was a seal leak on the upper side of the impeller housing.
Replace the seal...new oil...all is good...temp is fine....not a hard fix to do at home....
Hope this sheds some light on a problem you can fix at home.

My bad.. Didn't have the alarm go off...but have been told the problem was caught before it would sound because the motor was cooled down.
When the temp came up...throttled it down and went home to fix

the only alarm for water is in the engine mounted fuel filter.(racor style)
a common problem with the opti's is the oil level in the tank mounted on the engine, if its down even a tiny bit a pulsing alarm will go off.
the strainer in the main tank gets plugged with sludge or the inline check valve sticks. pretty easy to check
when the alarm goes off turn the engine off and check the oil level in the tank mounted on the engine it should be completely full.
or
with the engine running remove the plug on the top of the oil tank mounted on the engine it should over flow fairly fast. so be ready
put that plug back in. stop the engine. clean out the main oil tank and pick up strainer there is a check valve in the oil line its self and it should be cleaned and checked as well.
i can't emphasize enough how the motor mounted tank must be COMPLETELY full.
